Exercise

During the rest of this century , as never before, history will be the study of population.

The school, he said, consisted of one class of twenty-four boys, ranging in age from seven to thirteen.

Work, for most American and Chinese women aged 55 and under, involves responsibility for a household, a child or children, and a job outside the home as well.

要点:“he said”为插入语,放在了主语“The school”和谓语“consisted of”中间。

Exercise

Ideally then, a school system should be one in which the love of learning, rather than the acquisition of facts , is cultivated.

Still, he could not help thinking that if anything should happen, the nearest person he could contact by radio, unless there was a

ship nearby , would be on an island 885 miles away. Yet this other life has its interests, its enjoyments, its satisfaction, and , at certain rare intervals, a peaceful glow or a sudden excitement.

Exercise

Our forefather had no idea that human population would increase faster than the supplies of raw materials; most of them, even until

very recently, had the foolish idea that the treasures were “limitless”and “inexhaustible”

But one thing is certain: information and knowledge will become even more vital, and the people who possess it, whether they work in

manufacturing or services, will have the advantage and produce the wealth.

They appear to do everything in a rush, with an eye on the clock, as if they had a short time to live.

在第二个分句中,even until very recently 时间状语插入在主语most of them和谓语had之间。

要点:并列句and 之后的主语the people和谓语will have之间插入whether 引导的状语从句。

要点:介词短语“with an eye on the clock”为插入语,在句子中做状语。

Exercise

Americans admire the self-made person—the one who, with neither money nor family influence, fights his or her way to the top.

Silly or wise, terrible or delightful, it is a further helping of experience, an additional joy after dark, another slice of life cut

differently for which, it seems to me, we are never sufficiently grateful.

Quite a different problem, but one that is causing growing concern, is that

computers may violate people’s privacy.

要点:破折号后的“the one”是前面person的同位语,“the one”后面又有一个由who引导的定语从句,其中主语和谓语之间有一个插入语:with neither money nor family influence.

Silly or wise, terrible or

另外句子的表语也是平行结构“a further helping of experience, an additional joy after dark”“it seems to me”为插入语,插入到for which引导的定语从句中。

要点:句中“but one that is causing growing concern”,在句中作插入语。

Exercise

It is, everyone agrees, a huge task that the child performs when he learn to speak, and the fact that he does so in so short a period of time challenges explanation.

Do the constantly changing fashions of women’s clothes, one wonders, reflect basic qualities of inconstancy and instability?

It was probably not until the 1880’s that man, with the help of more advanced steam locomotive, managed to reach a speed of one hundred mph

“and”连结两个并列句,前一句为”it is …that”强调句型;后一分句”the fact”后为同位语从句”that he does so in so short a period of time”,因此,后一分句的主要部分为the fact challenges(需要)explanation

要点:“one wonders”为插入语,本句主干结构为“Do the fashions reflect qualities?”,“fashions”有两个定语“constantly changing”和“of women’s clothes”。“qualities”也有两个定语“basic”和“of inconstancy and instability”。

要点:此句为强调句型“It was …that…”; that 从句中主语man和谓语managed 之间插入介词短语“with the help of …”

2009.06 Passage One Questions 52 to 56 are based on the following passage. For hundreds of millions of years, turtles(海龟) have struggled out of the sea to lay their eggs on sandy beaches, long before there were nature documentaries to celebrate them, or GPS satellites and marine biologists to track them, or volunteers to hand-carry the hatchlings(幼龟) down to the water’s edge lest they become disoriented by headlights and crawl towards a motel parking lot instead. A formidable wall of bureaucracy has been erected to protect their prime nesting sites on the Atlantic coastlines. With all that attention paid to them, you’d think these creatures would at least have the gratitude not to go extinct. But Nature is indifferent to human notions of fairness, and a report by the Fish and Wildlife Service showed a worrisome drop in the populations of several species of North Atlantic sea turtles, notably loggerheads, which can grow to as much as 400 pounds. The South Florida nesting population, the largest, has declined by 50% in the last decade, according to Elizabeth Griffin, a marine biologist with the environmental group Oceana. The figures prompted Oceana to petition the government to upgrade the level of protection for the North Atlantic loggerheads from “threatened” to “endangered”—meaning they are in danger of disappearing without additional help. Which raises the obvious question: what else do these turtles want from us, anyway? It turns out, according to Griffin, that while we have done a good job of protecting the turtles for the weeks they spend on land (as egg-laying females, as eggs and as hatchlings), we have neglected the years they spend in the ocean.“The threat is from commercial fishing,” says Griffin. Trawlers (which drag large nets through the water and along the ocean floor) and longline fishers (which can deploy thousands of hooks on lines that can stretch for miles) take a heavy toll on turtles. Of course, like every other environmental issue today, this is playing out against the background of global warming and human interference with natural ecosystems. The narrow strips of beach on which the turtles lay their eggs are being squeezed on one side by development and on the other by the threat of rising sea levels as the oceans warm. Ultimately we must get a handle on those issues as well, or a creature that outlived the dinosaurs(恐龙)

The percentage of immigrants (including those unlawfully present) in the United states has been creeping upward for years. At 12.6 percent, it is now higher than at any point since the mid1920s. We are not about to go back to the days when Congress openly worried about inferior races polluting America’s bloodstream. But once again we are wondering whether we have too many of the wrong sort newcomers. Their loudest critics argue that the new wave of immigrants cannot, and indeed do not want to, fit in as previous generations did. We now know that these racist views were wrong. In time, Italians, Romanians and members of other so-called inferior races became exemplary Americans and contributed greatly, in ways too numerous to detail, to the building of this magnificent nation. There is no reason why these new immigrants should not have the same success. Although children of Mexican immigrants do better, in terms of educational and professional attainment, than their parents UCLA sociologist Edward Telles has found that the gains don’t continue. Indeed, the fouth generation is marginally worse off than the third James Jackson, of the University of Michigan, has found a similar trend among black Caribbean immigrants, Tells fears that Mexican-Americans may be fated to follow in the footsteps of American blacks-that large parts of the community may become mired(陷入)in a seemingly permanent state of poverty and Underachievement. Like African-Americans, Mexican-Americans are increasingly relegated to (降入)segregated, substandard schools, and their dropout rate is the highest for any ethnic group in the country. We have learned much about the foolish idea of excluding people on the presumption of the ethnic/racial inferiority. But what we have not yet learned is how to make the process of Americanization work for all. I am not talking about requiring people to learn English or to adopt American ways; those things happen pretty much on their own, but as arguments about immigration hear up the campaign trail, we also ought to ask some broader question about assimilation, about how to ensure that people , once outsiders , don’t forever remain marginalized within these shores. That is a much larger question than what should happen with undocumented workers, or how best to secure the border, and it is one that affects not only newcomers but groups that have been here for generations. It will have more impact on our future than where we decide to set the admissions bar for the latest ware of would-be Americans. And it would be nice if we finally got the answer right. 1. How were immigrants viewed by U.S. Congress in early days? A) They were of inferior races. B) They were a Source of political corruption. C) They were a threat to the nation’s security. D) They were part of the nation’s bloodstream. 2. What does the author think of the new immigrants? A) They will be a dynamic work force in the U.S. B) They can do just as well as their predecessors. C) They will be very disappointed on the new land. D) They may find it hard to fit into the mainstream. 3. What does Edward Telles’ research say about Mexican-Americans? A) They may slowly improve from generation to generation. B) They will do better in terms of educational attainment. C) They will melt into the African-American community. D) They may forever remain poor and underachieving. 4. What should be done to help the new immigrants? A) Rid them of their inferiority complex. B) Urge them to adopt American customs. C) Prevent them from being marginalized. D) Teach them standard American English. 5. According to the author, the burning issue concerning immigration is_______. A) How to deal with people entering the U.S. without documents B) How to help immigrants to better fit into American society C) How to stop illegal immigrants from crossing the border D) How to limit the number of immigrants to enter the U.S.

这些语气词有:must, always, never, the most, all, only, have to,any,no,very, completely, none, hardly等。 例(1)One of the great changes brought about by the knowledge society is that _____ . A.the difference between the employee and the employer has become insignificant. B.people‘s traditional concepts about work no longer hold true. C.most people have to take part-time jobs. D.people have to change their jobs from time to time.

(2)The main idea of this passage is that _____ . A.better use of green space facilities should be made so as to improve the quality of our life. B.attention must be directed to the improvement of recreative possibilities.C.the urban environment is providing more recreation activities than it did many years ago. D.priority must be given to the development of obligatory activities. 这些语气词有:can, could, may, should, usually, might, most, more or less, relatively,be likely to,possible, whether or,not necessarily 等。 例(1)It can be inferred from the passage that the author believes .A.Americans are more ambitious than people in other countries B.in many countries success often depends on one‘s social status C.American businesses are more democratic than those in other countries D.businesses in other countries are not as competitive as those in America

b,注意逻辑词提示,如but,however,because,so等。c,注意极端词提示,如most,only,absolutely,whole,entire等。 所以,请大家注意如a, research/ survey/ statistics/ evidence/ studies…+ show/ reveal/ indicate…和b, scientist/ researcher/ a certain scientist’s name…+ believe/ find/ discover/ estimate…

1. For hundreds of millions of years, turtles (海龟) have struggled out of the sea to lay their eggs on sandy beaches, long before there were nature documentaries to celebrate them, or GPS satellites and marine biologists to track them, or volunteers to handcarry the hatchlings (幼龟) down to the water 's edge lest they become disoriented by headlights and crawl towards a motel parking lot instead. For hundreds of millions of years 为介词短语作时间状语。before ?为时间状语从句,该从句采用的是there be 结构,主语为or 连接的三个名词(词组):natural documentaries ,GPS satellites and marine biologists 和volunteers ,主语 后的不定式均为主语的后置定语。 2. The figures prompted Oceana to petition the government to upgrade the level of protection for the North Atlantic loggerheads from “threatened ” to “endangered” —meaning they are in danger of disappearing without additional help. The figures prompted Oceana ?。to petition the government 为不定式作prompted 的状语,to upgrade the level of protection ? they are in danger ?help 作meaning 的宾语,相当于省略了引导词that 的宾语从句。 3. But Nature is indifferent to human notions of fairness, and a report by the Fish and Wildlife Service showed a worrisome drop in the populations of several species of North Atlantic sea turtles, notably loggerheads, which can grow to as much as 400 pounds. Nature is indifferent ?and?a report ?showed?a ?drop ?。But 表转折。by the Fish and Wildlife Service 为介词 短语作report 的后置定语。which can grow to as much as 400 pounds 为非限制性定语从句,修饰loggerheads 。be indifferent to 意为“对? a drop in 指“在? 4. The narrow strips of beach on which the turtles lay their eggs are being squeezed on one side by development and on the other by the threat of rising sea levels as the oceans warm.
