Malls offer goods andservices all in one place: food, clothing, things for their houses, entertainment, evenmedical services. So, are they one of the highlights of modern civilization?Environmental activists would say no and would go even further, arguing thatconsumer behavior is causing a huge environmental disaster. They cause consumers' ignorance of the side effect of their shopping—urban sprawl (扩大). Social scientists agree that patterns of development have changed the landscape alot. Before 1950, most people lived in towns or cities and either walked to work ortook public transportation.Only very wealthy people had automobiles.Farmers livedin rural areas or far-away villages and came into town only when they needed thingsthey couldn't produce themselves. If you stared at the landscape you would see townssurrounded by the countryside. Now automobiles become affordable and people are quick to make use of them.Ambitious workers could live in suburbs, just outside cities, which have started togrow rapidly. As long as there is lots of cheap land there, no one pays much attentionto the usage of that land.Malls, fast food restaurants, cinemas, and such spread out inlarge, flat buildings. These one-storey buildings and their parking lot take up too muchspace. Many farmers think they are better off selling their land than growing crops.Noone has realized once the land is built up in urban sprawl, the good farming land willbe ruined forever. There is no way to preserve (保护) it.Only in recent years have people come to miss the old way of life as they havelooked into the problems of unconditional growth. Now people realize that urbansprawl has come with serious environmental problems. The bad effects that sprawlbrings about include air and water pollution, loss of agricultural land, traffic jams, andso on.Many scholars think it's time to analyze the problems better so we can developproper policies to control further sprawl. Some think the best way to do is to educatecitizens.

用这种阅读方法回答who、what、when、where之类的问题最为有效。 2.

(What is the idea?What are facts?)

Children are always boasting.They say things like“My Dad's car is bigger than your Dad's,”“My Mom is smarter than yours.”and“My family has more money than yours.” The word“boasting” means __B___ A.骄傲 B.吹牛 C.顽皮 D.幼稚 Many plants and animals are going extinct.Mammoths,which are related(有关联的) with Asia elephants,are now extinct.There are no mammoths in the world today. 1.A mammoth is a kind of _C___. A.plant B.bird C.animal D.tree 2.The word extinct means _C_ A.出现 B.危险 C.灭绝

态度的标志是含有attitude或者是theauthorbelieves/seems/considers/regards等等。 比如reserved(有保留的),tempered(温和的,缓和的)因为持有保留态度的观点比较客观。

From the passage,we learn that___.答案为B: The rainforest people have done some- thing to protect their home. An illness had kept the boy home和下文写给Rick的信中可以猜测出意为“去世”。

2014高考英语阅读理解基础训练极品题(14)及答案 阅读理解------------ SYDNEY—Australia’s economic boom is encouraging a steady stream of unexpected visitors looking for work: Americans. U.S. citizens are heading to Australia in small but growing numbers as near-10% unemployment at home drives more to look for jobs Down Under, where China’s thirst for iron ore (矿石) and energy is transforming the Pacific nation into an economic powerhouse. A bricklaying student from Silver Trowel, a leading provider of quality education and training in the building and construction industry, apprentices (当学徒) on a building project in Western Australia, where workers are in short supply. Daniel Davila, a 23-year-old floorer from Camarillo, California made the 14-hour move across the Pacific two years ago. He had been forced to take a job stocking shelves at a local grocery store for $8.90 an hour when he couldn’t get work fixing floors. On a good day in Australia, he now makes as much as 50 Australian dollars (US$50.21) an hour—about twice the amount for a typical flooring job in the U.S. He plans to start his own flooring business. “I can make what I did in a week in the U.S. in less than a day here,” said Mr. Davila, who lives near a mining boom town in Western Australia. Australian government figures show just under 7,000 Americans currently working on long-term visas, an 80% jump over the past five years. U.S. citizens are now the third-largest group applying for so-called 457 work visas, after British and Indian nationals. Americans with degrees in areas such as accounting or mine engineering, as well as other skilled workers, can obtain a nonrenewable(不可续期的) permit for as much as a three-year stay. After that, they can apply for the renewable 457, which allows up to a four-year stay. The need for workers is particularly pressing in Western Australia. The mining state’s unemployment rate was 4.5% in Nov ember, below the national average of 5.2%.
