When they were first introduced, many farmers welcomed them as a great way to fight crop disease and increase production. Over time, however, what some scientists have found is that their long-term use can sometimes harm both the land and people’s health.2、 For example, pesticides can damage the land by killing not only harmful bacteria and insects, but also helpful ones. In addition, these chemicals can stay in the soil and underground water sources for a long time. This affects the crops grown on the land and, in turn, the animals and humans who digest them. Many people worry that these chemicals may make them ill and even cause cancer. In fact, some pesticides like DDT have been prohibited in most countries because of the damage they cause to people and the environment. As for chemical fertilisers, crops grown with them usually grow too fast to be rich in nutrition. They may look beautiful on the outside, but inside there is usually more water than essential minerals, and they often have less flavour as well.3、 As an alternative, some farmers have switched to organic farming, and many customers have turned to organic food when they shop at the local grocery. Organic farming is simply farming without using any chemicals. Organic farmers focus on keeping their soil rich and free of disease through natural means. For example, manyorganic farmers use natural waste from animals as fertiliser. This makes the soil in their fields richer in minerals. It also keeps the air, soil, water, and crops free of chemicals.4、 Organic farmers also use many other methods to produce rich soil. They often change the kind of crop grown in each field every year. For instance, they may grow corn or wheat in a field one year, and then grow beans there the next. Why different crops are grown is because they put important minerals back into the ground, making it ready for the next batch of crops. Organic farmers also plant diverse crops that use different depths of soil to help keep it rich. For example peanuts grow on the ground’s surface, but many other vegetables put down deep roots. The goal of using different organic farming methods is to grow good food while avoiding damage to the environment or to people’s health.5、 Some people would prefer to stop the use of man-made chemicals in agriculture entirely. What keeps them from doing so is the fact that chemical farming serves the high demand for food around the world. Organic farming is nowhere near able to meet that need. Therefore, there is still a long way to find a suitable solution that puts sufficient food on the dinner table while keeping people and the environment as healthy as possible.============参考答案============一、阅读填空1、 1. have been in widespread2. as3. what4. both5. by6. but7. grown8. in9. have been prohibited10.
1:Children in low-income families and poor communities are less likely to take organized youth sports for granted because they often lack the resources needed to pay for participation ___, equipment, and transportation to practices and games and their communities do not have resources to build and maintian sports fields and facilities. (08.12)A) bill B) accounts C) fees D) fare【答案】C【解析】该题属于义近词辨析。
2:Sleep Smart records the distinct pattern of brain waves produced during each phase of sleep, via a headband equipped _____electrodes(电极) and a microprocessor.(06.6)A) by B) of C) with D) over【答案】C【解析】本题考查固定搭配equip sb./sth. with sth., 意为“配备、装配”。
3:For starters, cabin pressures at high altitudes are set at roughly they would be if you lived at 5,000 to 8,000 feet above sea level. (05.12)A) who B)what C) which D) that【答案】B【解析】此题考查语法。
What在此处引导名词性从句“what they would be”,该名词性从句一起充当介词at的宾语。
4:But human language permits communication about anything, things like unicorn(独角兽) that have never existed. (06.12)A) only B) almost C) even D) just【答案】C【解析】根据上下文,空格处需要填入一个表示递进关系的连词,故选C。
1:Similarly, consumers operating under a given mood state tend to react to stimuli (刺激因素) in a direction ______ with that mood state. (07.12)A)resistant B)persistent C)insistent D)consistent【答案】D【解析】此题的解题关键在于空格后的with一词。
2:Nothing defines humans so much as our ability to communicate abstract thoughts, _______ about the universe, the mind, love, dreams, or ordering a drink. (06.12)A) what B)whether C) while D) if【答案】B【解析】由空格前后句子的结构可知,该题考查whether…or…
3: Other animals, it is true, communicate with one another by means of cries: for example, many birds utter warning calls at the approach of danger; monkeys utter cries, such as expressions of anger, fear and pleasure. (2002.12 )A) identical B) similar C) different D unfamiliar【答案】C【解析】由于句子之间语义上的相关性,有时完形填空题题干中的一部分内容是对选项词的解释,或者选项的释义通过such as, for example, that is, and 等词体现出来。
