If you frequently travel for business, Staybridge Suites offer you a range of home comforts. Four recent visitors to Staybridge Suites explain why they booked, what they enjoyed and what made them want to return.

Claire Metcalf

“The concept is great, but the staff are the ones who really make it.” she says. “It takes a lot of discipline to always be friendly, but the staff at Staybridge Suites do that. They genuinely care about you.”

Andrew Roberts

“One of the best things is having my own kitchen. I often end up working late and I don’t fancy eating in a restaurant on my own, so cook ing for myself is a big attraction”.

“The main thing for me is being able to cook and have my own little flat. The staff are amazing. It is great to be recognized by them,” he says.

Pauline Robinson

“What I love about it is the way that you are treated by the staff,” she says. “Some of the staff have been there all that time and they do look after you well. As a woman staying on my own, it is reassuring that they look out for you, and recently when I was poorly depressed they even brought things I needed to my room.”

Ryan Ruckledge

“The fully-equipped kitchen is great. I always have a one-bed apartment so I have a separate kitchen and dining room and I’m able to relax and cook some meals. Eating out can feel a bit much when you do it day in and day out--it makes you hate what you do--and I don’t want that.”

“You’ll be blind by the time you’re twenty-five,” a doctor at Children’s Hospital predicted. “Your blood sugars are much too high.” It c onsumed me. No matter where I was or what I was doing, it was overhead like a dark cloud, waiting for just the right opportunity to break open and destroy my world.

I liked painting. Losing myself in painting filled me with peace. Painting provided me with the only place where I could escape from those threatening words.

When I was twenty-one, my right eye went blind. Precisely three months after my twenty-fifth birthday, I had a massive hemorrhage (大出血) in my left eye because of an accident. For the next twenty years, vision came and went. I went through many eye operations in an attempt to keep my vision. But after one final operation, I lost the battle and all remaining vision. And I buried all dreams of painting.

Desperate, I enrolled in (注册) a sixteen-week program for the blind and visually impaired (损伤的). I learned personal adjustment and the use of a computer with adaptive(自适应的) software. A whole new world opened up to me through this program.

“Jaws and Window-Eyes are leading software for the blind,” my instructor told me. “You can use the Internet, e-mail and Microsoft with all its tools and features.” It’s amazing! Hope went up for the first time in years. “By learning how to use hot keys to control the mouse, you can use Microsoft Access, Excel and Powerpoint,” my instructor added.

For the next several years, I learned that when one door closes, another door opens. There are plenty of choices available for the blind and visually impaired through the gift of technology. Not only do I have a speaking computer, but I have a speaking watch, alarm clock and calculator.

People in Mayilattumpara, a village in southwest India, could not sleep at night. Because of habitat (栖息地) loss, wild elephants would enter their village to look for food, destroying crops and farmland. The villagers tried to keep the wild elephants out with electric fences, deep holes and plants believed to keep the animals away. They even tried beating drums.Nothing worked! The repeated destruction of crops led some villagers to stop farming.

The villagers’ lot improved last year. That is because villagers have finally found what keeps the elephants away: honeybees. Elephants, as it turns out, are afraid of loudly buzzing bees and their stings(蛰刺).

A wire fence holding beehives(蜂房) now runs along the border of the village. When elephants try to pass the 2.5 kilometer wire fence, angry bees fly out in groups and the elephants quickly flee, people in the village say. Protected by the bees, farmers have restarted to grow their crops. Some even started to raise honeybees.

The idea started in Africa. V.S. Roy worked for the federal government’s Agriculture Technology Management Agency (ATMA). He said the idea for the fence came from the work of an Oxford university researcher, Lucy King. In 2008, the idea whether honeybees would keep

We got together at the Goodwill Square and handed out leaflets to passers-by, tell them the significance of environmental protection. The leaflets soon attract the attention of the public. Some of us also delivered a public speech to tell people some knowledges about how to protect the environment. They were also told where to take action in a properly and efficient way. This activity was offered us a chance to contribute to our society but I have learned much from it. I think someone should be concerned about our environment and take active part in improving it.

宁夏银川一中2020-2021学年高二上学期期末英语试题

宁夏银川一中2020-2021学年高二上学期期末英语试题 学校:___________姓名:___________班级:___________考号:___________ 一、阅读选择 My color television has given me nothing but a headache. I was able to buy it a little over a year ago because I had my relatives give me money for my birthday instead of a lot of clothes that wouldn’t fit. I let a salesclerk fool me into buying a discontinued model. I realized this a day later, when I saw newspaper advertisements for the set at seventy-five dollars less than I had paid. The set worked so beautifully when I first got it home that I would keep it on until stations signed off for the night. Fortunately, I didn’t got any channels showing all-night movies or I would never have gotten to bed. Then I started developing a problem with the set that involved static (静电) noise. For some reason, when certain shows switched into a commercial, a loud noise would sound for a few seconds. Gradually, this noise began to appear during a show, and to get rid of it. I had to change to another channel and then change it back. Sometimes this technique would not work, and I had to pick up the set and shake it to remove the sound. I actually began to build up my arm muscles (肌肉) shaking my set. When neither of these methods removed the static noise, I would sit helplessly and wait for the noise to go away. At last I ended up hitting the set with my fist, and it stopped working altogether. My trip to the repair shop cost me $62, and the set is working well now, but I keep expecting more trouble. 1.Why did the author say he was fooled into buying the TV set? A.He got an older model than he had expected. B.He couldn’t return it when it was broken. C.He could have bought it at a lower price. D.He failed to find any movie shows on it. 2.Which of the following can best r eplace the phrase “signed off” in Paragraph 1? A.ended all their programs B.provided fewer channels C.changed to commercials D.showed all-night movies 3.How did the author finally get his TV set working again? A.By shaking and hitting it. B.By turning it on and off. C.By switching channels. D.By having it repaired.

They genuinely care about you.” Andrew Roberts “One of the best things is having my own kitchen. I often end up working late and I don’t fancy eating in a restaurant on my own, so cook ing for myself is a big attraction”. “The main thing for me is being able to cook and have my own little flat. The staff are amazing. It is great to be recognized by them,” he says. As a woman staying on my own, it is reassuring that they look out for you, and recently when I was poorly depressed they even brought things I needed to my room.” Ryan Ruckledge “The fully-equipped kitchen is great. No matter where I was or what I was doing, it was overhead like a dark cloud, waiting for just the right opportunity to break open and destroy my world. I liked painting. Losing myself in painting filled me with peace. Painting provided me with the only place where I could escape from those threatening words. 高二英语第 1 页共6 页
