(1)

A cobra (眼镜蛇) was set free on September 10 in a park in Xiangtan City, South China’s Hunan Province. 36 And they began hunting for the deadly creature to try to prevent it from hurting anyone.

In the name of mercy, some people free caged animals, including foreign species, mostly bought from pet shops or markets. 37 Last April, someone freed hundreds of foxes and raccoon dogs in a Beijing suburb, causing economic losses to animal farmers and endangering the safety of local residents.

38 Besides, today people are increasingly aware of the importance of environmental protection and biodiversity. But it is necessary to ensure that acts of freeing captive animals do not violate laws or harm the interests of the public. 39

In order to regulate the release of captive animals, the government revised the law on wildlife conservation in 2016. According to the updated regulations, no individual or organization should harm the public interest by freeing captive animals. 40

A. Such news has frequently appeared in recent years.

B. Local police immediately arrested the troublemaker.

C. Freeing captive animals is an act that deserves respect in China.

D. However, their warm-hearted kindness often causes serious consequences.

E. Freeing a cobra in a park reflects the troublemaker’s ignorance of other people’s lives.

F. It is important to protect animals including those set free by people.

G. And any creatures set free should be local species that have no threat to local biodiversity.

The holiday season is supposed to be the most festive and fun time of the year, but all those plans and expectations of joy can turn tougher and more stressful than they sound. This is especially true for those of us who struggle with mental illness.

36 Sometimes you’re forced to spend time with family you rarely see and don’t always get along with. Or you are off from work, with more time to think troubling thoughts. Or you are put into party situations that you don’t like.

When you have a routine, it’s easier to manage whatever mental struggles you may face, and when that routine is broken, it can trigger(引发)things you may not be ready to face. 37

It was during the holidays when I hit a low moment and, with the help of my mother, decided to seek help for my eating disorder.

Around the holidays, I often feel like I’m supposed to be everywhere w i t h e v e r y o n e.

38 To fight this, I’ve developed a mantra(咒语): it’s not selfish to take time for yourself.

Take a walk in nature. Talk to a friend you trust. Sit out one of the holiday gatherings in favor of some personal time. 39

Trying to spend all of your time pleasing everyone else is not only exhausting—it’s impossible. And you know what? 40

A. I know it has for me.

B. The holidays break your routine.

C. There are many things crowding in your mind.

D. I will accompany my friends to go wherever they like.

E. I have the added guilt of knowing it’s the season of giving

F. Just do whatever helps you calm down and gives you a break from the stress.

G. If you take a little time for yourself, you will be much better

company for those around you.

It would be hard to overlook the influence that television once held o v e r f a m i l y l i f e.

36 It was always there in the background. But that world is disappearing.

A report shows that children are more likely to watch programs and videos on laptops and mobile phones, rather than on television screens. That is to say, watching television within families is becoming a private and individual activity. 37 TV sets, the focus in a lot of homes for many years, are falling out of favor among children.

38 The monitoring survey shows their viewing has slightly increased this year to an average of over two and a half hours per day. Half of children and teenagers preferred watching back-to-back episodes(剧集), so that two and a half hours of viewing might be for a single program. 39 The idea of a TV channel with a fixed schedule also seems as clumsy as a DVD player.

Such shared viewing is so last century. No longer will children argue over what to watch and then complain about their parents’ choices. And parents are increasingly unlikely to be able to supervis e their children’s viewing. 40

A. It was a shared experience across communities.

B. The idea of waiting for a program is disappearing.

C. Homes become places where people are alone together.

D. Even if you hated programs, you still watched them.

E. Both of them realize the shape of family life is changing.

F. Teenagers regarded themselves as what they liked on television.

G. It’s not that young people have stopped watching programs and videos.

Here’s a surprising truth---one of the most powerful weapons to enhance your life is your own tongue!

36 Concentrate on the qualities of other people that you can affirm instead of on their faults. This alone should do wonders in relieving stress in your relationships. Doctors know that prolonged anxiety harms you, but encouraging words can remove stress and a peaceful mind leads to improved physical health, too. 37 Avoid fueling verbal fire. When someone starts to blow up all over you, be careful about your response. Why burn your relationship house down with your own mouth? Try spraying water on an argument with calm words instead of using a flame-thrower. How many marriages have been destroyed when in a fit of anger people spew out hurtful accusations to one another that are never forgotten! 38 “A soft answer turns away wrath (狂怒), but a harsh word stirs up anger.”

Stop complaining. We all know people who complain all the time, especially about the fault of others. 39 Nothing is ever going well for them, and probably nothing ever will—as long as they keep

complaining and putting their energy on what they really don’t want.

Do think before you speak. 40 It is useless regretting. It doesn’t matter how unintentional they may be, words can sometimes cut a lot deeper t han a sword. Very often you’ll hear people say, “I didn’t mean to hurt your feelings.” Well, if you didn’t want to hurt feelings, why couldn’t you be thoughtful before you let the unpleasant words escape your loose lips?

A. Think twice before speaking.

B. The longer you think, the better you’ll speak.

C. The more they do so, the more they are disliked.

D. Practice speaking positive words instead of negative ones.

E. Once the words leave your mouth, it is impossible to take them back.

F. We store in our minds in a kind of mental art gallery what others have said to us.

G. You should practice waiting a while before answering someone when you are angry.

(5)

Why do people take “selfies(自拍)”? Researchers at Syracuse University in New York tried to answer that question. 36 People who post selfies and use editing software to make themselves

look better show behavior connected to narcissism (自恋), the Syracuse researchers said. Narcissists are people who think very highly of themselves, especially how they look. 37 Because social media can be superficial (肤浅), it is mostly used to share such unimportant information about their lives.

38 People who post group selfies show a need for popularity and a need to belong to a group, the Syracuse University research found. They said some people feel “peer pressure” to post selfies. And some believe it did not really happen if there is no picture of an event or experience.

Chock said posting selfies on social media is not all that different from what people have done for many years. On trips and special events, our elders used cameras to take photos. Before social media, people would bring back photos to show friends and family. 39 If you are a nice person, you commented about how nice everyone in the photos looked, especially children and the person showing the photos. That was the old way of “clicking” like. 40 People can decide not to look at photos of their friends and family—even if they click “like” or even “love” under the Faceboo k selfie.

A. On social media, it is a different experience.

B. They came up with some surprising answers.

C. There are other reasons why people post selfies.

D. You had no choice but to look at them.

E. Here is how the Syracuse researchers did their study.

F. For them, social media is a good place to post selfies.

G. There are no major differences on how often men and women post selfies.

The weather’s nice, and the youngsters are out of time. Here are a few tips to help you along the way: Nature is all around us. 37 For small kids, there’s likely plenty in the backyard, courtyard, or schoolyard. National parks are great, but kids foster a deep connection with nature close to home! 38 Don’t worry too much about what to do once you arrive at your nature-rich destination. What kids really need is free time to engage all their senses and use their imaginations. You can learn too. What counts is simply to get out there, show that you value the outdoors, and be ready to have fun. 39 In fact, it is not necessary for you to know anything at all about science or nature. And remember, questions are more powerful than answers anyway! Sit back and watch your kids learn. Don’t be too much of a helicopter parent, always saying “no”. Instead, try to spare more time to stay with your kids when necessary.

Brain Transplants Research on the human brain has been attracting more and more scientists in recent years. 1 If we compare a human brain to a hard disc, what the scientists are doing is to make better use of the hard disc. The idea that a human brain could be transplanted may come from Frankenstein. In 1999, an experiment turned a bear into a dolphin. 2 They were made of the memory area in the dolphin’s brain containing information about swimming. They had a series of useful information, which was saved into a button-sized chip (芯片). Later the information was transplanted into the action memory area in the bear’s brain. 3 It proved to be a highly successful experiment and a bear was turned into a dolphin. Recently, another memory transplant was performed at the Motor Nerve Research Institute of the University of California. The experiment had an entire transplant of the memory area. 4 The transplant was performed from a dog named Genius to a dog named Idiot. Genius could follow up to 100 gestures and orders made by its master. It was a real genius in memorizing. However, Idiot had no contact with people since its birth. It became an animal with nothing in its brain, without any memory. 5 When the two dogs woke up, Idiot had grasped all the abilities Genius possessed; it was good at memorizing and sensible. It could follow every gesture and any command given by its master. But Genius gave no response to its master, and did not recognize him at all. A. The experiment was a complete success. B. It included actions, moods, logic, words, images, etc. C. Then it was released by means of electric power. D. Different images have different meanings in the memory area.

方法一:____________例句: __________________________________________________ 方法二:____________例句: __________________________________________________ 方法三:____________例句: __________________________________________________

One reason is that English has so many rules. 36 Sometimes, this leaves learners confused. For example, the order of words in a sentence can be tricky. 37 The pronunciation of English words cannot always be judged by their spelling. For example, there are at least six ways to pronounce the group of letters spelled o-u-g-h.
