The Obamas are the first African American family to move into the White House.

President Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle, are well aware of the historic significance of his election and what it means to many Americans. In her campaign stump speech, Mrs. Obama often mentioned a 10-year-old girl she met in a South Carolina beauty shop who told her that if Barack Obama were elected president, “it means that I can imagine anything for mys elf.”

“She could have been me,” Mrs. Obama told Newsweek magazine. “Because the truth is, I’m not supposed to be here, standing here. I’m a statistical oddity. Black girl, brought up on the South Side of Chicago. Was I supposed to go to Princeton? No. … Th ey said maybe Harvard Law was too much for me to reach for. But I went, I did fine. And I’m certainly not supposed to be standing here.”

The first lady was born Michelle Robinson and raised in a working-class family in Chicago, Illinois. Her father worked at the municipal water department and was a Democratic precinct captain, while her mother was a stay-at-home mom who took care of her and her older brother, Craig.

Michelle Robinson worked hard in school and landed a spot in the Princeton University class of 1985. After earning an undergraduate degree in sociology with a minor in African-American studies, she attended Harvard Law School.

Barack Obama and Michelle Robinson met in 1989 when she, then an associate at the Chicago, Illinois, law firm Sidley & Austin, was assigned to mentor Obama, who was a summer intern.

The future president asked her to attend one of his community organizing sessions in Chicago. She accepted and attended a meeting, where she told Newsweek that he spoke to participants abo ut closing the gap between “the world as it is, and the world as it should be.”

Michelle Robinson and Barack Obama continued to date, and the couple married in 1992. The Obamas share a passion for public service and have devoted much of their adult lives to careers in the public sector.

After leaving the corporate law practice where they met, Mrs. Obama held several positions in Chicago government, and she was founding executive director of Public Allies — Chicago, an organization that encourages young people to pursue public service jobs. Most recently, she served as vice president of community and external affairs at the University of Chicago Medical Center.

“She certainly seems to be someone who would take advantage of the podium the White House affords h er,” said Dr. Myra Gutin, historian and professor of communications at Rider University in New Jersey. “She is bright, she is articulate, and she has professional experiences in management.”

The Obamas hope that their enthusiasm for public service and their extensive professional experience and achievements will help them deal with the challenges ahead. Behind Barack Obama’s desire to be president and have a positive impact on the world are his young daughters, Malia, born in 1998, and Sasha (short for Natasha), born in 2001. The girls are the youngest inhabitants of the White House since Amy Carter, who was nine years old when her father, Jimmy Carter, was elected president in 1976.

“My life revolves around my two girls,” then Senator Obama said in a Father’s Day speech at a Chicago church. “And what I think about is what kind of world I’m leaving them. What I’ve realized is that life doesn’t count for much unless you’re willing to do your small part to leave our children — all of our children — a better world. That is our ultimate responsibility as fathers and parents.”

(Public

On this Memorial Day, as our nation honors its unbroken line of fallen heroes, our sense of patriotism is particularly strong. Because while we gather here under open skies, we know that far beyond the Organ Mountains – in the streets of Baghdad, and the outskirts of Kabul – America's sons and daughters are sacrificing on our behalf. And our thoughts and prayers are with them. I speak to you today with deep humility. My grandfather marched in Patton's Army, but I cannot know what it is to walk into battle like so many of you. My grandmother worked on a bomber assembly line, but I cannot know what it is for a family to sacrifice like so many of yours have. I am the father of two young girls, and I cannot imagine what it is to lose a child. My heart breaks for the families who've lost a loved one. These are things I cannot know. But there are also some things I do know. I know that our sadness today is mixed with pride; that those we've lost will be remembered by a grateful nation; and that our presence here today is only possible because your loved ones, America's patriots, were willing to give their lives to defend our nation. I know that while we may come from different places, cherish different traditions, and have different political beliefs, we all –every one of us – hold in reverence those who've given this country the full measure of their devotion. And I know that children in New Mexico and across this country look to your children, to your brothers and sisters, mothers and fathers, and friends –to those we honor today –as a shining example of what's best about America. Their lives are a model for us all. What led these men and women to wear their country's uniform? What is it that leads anyone to put aside their own pursuit of life's comforts; to subordinate their own sense of survival, for something bigger – something greater? Many of those we honor today were so young when they were killed. They had a whole life ahead of them – birthdays and weddings, holidays with children and grandchildren, homes and jobs and happiness of their own. And yet, at one moment or another, they felt the tug, just as generations of Americans did before them. Maybe it was a massacre in a Boston square; or a President's call to save the Union and free the slaves. Maybe it was the day of infamy that awakened a nation to a storm in the Pacific and a madman's death march across Europe. Or maybe it was the morning they woke up to see our walls of security crumble along with our two largest towers. Whatever the moment was, when it came and they felt that tug, perhaps it was simply the thought of a mom or a dad, a husband or a wife, or a child not yet born that made this young American think that it was time to go; that made them think "I must serve so that the people I love can live –in happiness, and safety, and freedom."

barack obama’s inaugural address ——美国第44任总统奥巴马宣誓就职的演讲词 英文: my fellow citizens: i stand here today humbled by the task before us, grateful for the trust you have bestowed, mindful of the sacrifices borne by our ancestors. i thank president bush for his service to our nation, as well as the generosity and cooperation he has shown throughout this transition. forty-four americans have now taken the presidential oath. the words have been spoken during rising tides of prosperity and the still waters of peace. yet, every so often the oath is taken amidst gathering clouds and raging storms. at these moments, america has carried on not simply because of the skill or vision of those in high office, but because we the people have remained faithful to the ideals of our forbearers, and true to our founding documents. so it has been. so it must be with this generation of americans. that we are in the midst of crisis is now well understood. our nation is at war, against a far-reaching network of violence and hatred. our economy is badly weakened, a consequence of greed and irresponsi bility on the part of some, but also our collective failure to make hard choices and prepare the nation for a new age. homes have been lost; jobs shed; businesses shuttered. our health care is too costly; our schools fail too many; and each day brings further evidence that the ways we use energy strengthen our adversaries and threaten our planet. these are the indicators of crisis, subject to data and statistics. less measurable but no less profound is a sapping of confidence across our land - a nagging fear that america’s decline is inevitable, and that the next generation must lower its sights. today i say to you that the challenges we face are real. they are serious and they are many. they will not be met easily or in a short span of time. but know this, america - they will be met. on this day, we gather because we have chosen hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord. that precious gift, that noble idea, passed on from generation to generation: the god-given promise that all are equal, all are free, and all deserve a chance to pursue their full measure of happiness. in reaffirming the greatness of our nation, we understand that greatness is never a given. it must be earned. our journey has never been one of short-cuts or settling for less. it has not been the path for the faint-hearted - for those who prefer leisure over work, or seek only the pleasures of riches and fame. rather, it has been the risk-takers, the doers, the makers of things - some celebrated but more often men and women obscure in their labor, who have carried us up the long, rugged path towards prosperity and freedom. for us, they packed up their few worldly possessions and traveled across oceans in search of a new life.

It’s the answer told by lines that stretched around schools and churches in numbers this nation has never seen; by people who waited three hours and four hours, many for the very first time in their lives, because they believed that this time must be different; that their voice could be that difference. It’s the answer spoken by young and old, rich and poor, Democrat and Republican, black, white, Latino, Asian, Native American, gay, straight, disabled and not disabled – Americans who sent a message to the world that we have never been a collection of Red States and Blue States: we are, and always will be, the United States of America.

My fellow citizens: 各位同胞: I stand here today humbled by the task before us, grateful for the trust you have bestowed, mindful of the sacrifices borne by our ancestors. Our economy is badly weakened, a consequence of greed and irresponsibility on the part of some, but also our collective failure to make hard choices and prepare the nation for a new age.

那么pirate radio(非常好看英伦摇滚电影海盗电台)里面说,能承认错误的,才称得上是个男人。 这类内容不能足以强有力的表现你做了什么,what did you do

(Ann Nixon Cooper) 2. (If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible; who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time; who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer.) (To those who would tear this world down we will defeat you. To those who seek peace and security we support you. And to all those who have wondered if America’s beacon still burns as bright tonight we proved once more that the true strength of our nation comes not from our the might of our arms or the scale of our wealth, but from the enduring power of our ideals: democracy, liberty, opportunity, and unyielding hope.) 3. (America I have never been more hopeful than I am tonight that we will get there. I promise you we as a people will get there.) (For that is the true genius of America that America can change. Our union can be perfected)最后更是以7个Yes we can来传达其好言壮志。 (I would not be standing here tonight without the unyielding support of my best friend for the last sixteen years, the rock of our family and the love of my life, our nation’s next First Lady, Michelle Obama).
