These days, you can get a trophy (奖品)just for showing up. Walk into the bedroom of 12-year-old Lucas, a sixth-grader from New Jersey, and you might think you?ve accidentally walked into a sports hall of fame. There are awards everywhere.

Lucas admits that he didn91 exactly earn these trophies for his athletic skill. “I?m actually not so good at sports' he says. Like many kids in sports programs, Lucas got his trophies for simply showing up to games.

“This has become practically a universal policy in many communities,” says Karen Coffin, a c oach who writes about youth sports.

The “trophies for all” policy is part of a bigger change that has swept youth sports over the past two decades. Back when your parents were learning how to swing a bat, coaches often openly favored star athletes. Less-gifted players would spend entire games sitting on the bench. Today, rules in many leagues require equal playing time for all team members. “The focus isn?t on winning,” says Coffin. “It?s about building skills.”

上接B2版

B3 This is a welcome change for many. More kids than ever are playing a variety of team sports. Coaches are encouraged to support everyone on their teams, not just the future star. “The idea is to motivate kids to play sports, to have fun,” says Dr. Michelle Anthony, an author and psychologist who works with kids and schools.

But some experts suggest that giving trophies to everyone sends the wrong message. In life, most people are not rewarded for simply doing what?s required. A student doesn?t get an A just for going to class. An employee does n?t get a raise just for arriving to work on time.

Both Coffin and Anthony point out that trophies can be something in vain when everyone gets one. Coffin also emphasizes that trophies are not an effective way for coaches to motivate players. “Receiving a pat on the back, a thumbs-up from the coach ... or any show of appreciation is what keeps kids coming back,” she says.

As 17-year-old Sarah Kolar prepared for the first day of her senior year, her mother Jill Kolar felt very aware that it was her daughter?s last first day of high school.

The student at Greensburg Salem High School, outside of Pittsburgh, will go away to college after graduation and while Jill feels excited that her daughter will enjoy new experiences, this last year also seems bittersweet. Sarah feels it, too. To commemorate milestones without causing a flood of tears, Jill and her husband try to keep things light. “We try to make a joke about it, but also draw attention and try to cherish it — no matter how mundane (世俗的),”Jill explains.

The senior year of high school causes teens and parents to experience a flood of emotions —everything from excitement to sadness. And everyone struggles with how to deal with this time of transition as kids turn into young adults.

When Toni Piccinini?s oldest child, Page, now 26, was entering her senior year in 2006, Toni realized it was a year of many last times. She wrote down her feelings in a journal and tried to make Page5 s senior year

memorable. These journal entries became the foundation for a book, “The Goodbye Year: Wisdom and Culinary Therapy ta Survive Your Child’s Senior Year of High School (and Reclaim the You of y o u).” “ It was really clear that everything happening was going to be the last Toni says. U I exposed my weakness and the different things I did trying to deal with the fact that this big part of my life was coming to an end.”

While Toni first ignored her emotions, she eventually faced them. She shared what she had learned and gave recommendations by months. In September, for example, she advised that moms join a new social group. “I?ve been spending so much time fundraising and volunteering and all these things centered around my ch ildren,” she explains. “Join a new group that has absolutely nothing to do with parenting.” Toni Piccinini, who lives in Marin County, California, north of San Francisco, works as a new mother coach —helping women cope with sleep deprivation, breast feeding and other challenges of motherhood.

Your relationship with your child is cluttered (使杂乱) with the past. Your child is not in fifth grade and maybe you5re still trying to be the same mom. The physical clutter clearing helps with the emotional clutter clearing, so when June comes along, moms can graduate too,” Toni says.

36. The author wants to tell that when Sarah Kolar comes to the senior

year, _____.

D. By participating in social activities.

40. What can we learn from Toni's words in the last paragraph?

Tiny monitoring devices have become an increasingly common way for scientists to study elusive animals that are difficult to track on a day-to-day basis. However, now it seems that smart seals have caught on to the trick and are using it to their advantage to catch fish!

To find out if that is true, a team of researchers from the University of St. Andrews in Scotland selected a group of ten young grey seals that had neither encountered the ocean nor been exposed to any kind of acoustic (声音的)tags. The researchers then placed the seals one at a time, inside a pool that contained 20 foraging boxes, only two of which housed fish —one with tags and the other without.

Each seal was allowed to explore the boxes twenty separate times. In order to ensure that mammal was not depending on its memory, the fish

were moved to different boxes each time. At first, there was no difference in the amount of time it took the seals to discover the tagged and untagged fish. However, after they had been in the pool a few times, they started locating the tagged fish much faster.

To confirm that this indeed was the case, there searchers conducted a second experiment using two boxes — one with pieces of fish and the other with just acoustic tags. Sure enough, the seals were all attracted to the one that was sending out signals.

While this experiment involved only seals, the researchers believe that other marine mammals may also be using the information to catch prey. Sadly, predators like sharks that have been tagged by scientists may be negatively affected, as pings they emit could warn their prey of their presence. Besides potentially messing up nature?s food chain, the “dinner bell” effect of the acoustic tags could also mean that the concl usions reached by previous fish studies may not be correct. Now that the secret is out, scientists will have to come up with another way to conduct their studies — one that is not detectable by the crafty marine animals.

41. What does the underlined part “the trick" in Paragraph l refer to?

A. Looking for ways to catch fish.

B. Following the sound that fish make.

C. Tracking sea animals on a day-to-day basis.

D. Attaching tiny monitoring devices to sea animals.

42. What is implied about the ten young grey seals?

A. They were not born in the ocean.

B. They have acoustic tags attached to them.

C. They have better hearing than normal seals.

D. They have been trained to recognize acoustic tags.

43. After doing; the two experiments the researchers most probably

concluded that

A. it's really easy for seals to find their prey

B. seals can be easily fooled by acoustic tags

C. seals can really make use of the acoustic signals to prey

D. seals are much cleverer than most of the other sea animals

44. The researchers seem to believe that sharks tagged by scientists

A. may benefit from the tags

B. may find it hard to find prey

C. may attract seals by mistake

D. may be annoyed by the emitted pings

45. Which of the following shows the correct relation among the

paragraphs?

A.①/②③④/⑤

B.①/②/③④⑤

C.①/②③/④⑤

D.①②③④/⑤

can look through the online photo gallery of this brave French photographer. The photographer says that his pictures are just what he has seen during his trip and what the government wants or allows to show to tourists. the travel photographer's first-class photography's technique. It is beautifully composed, amazing capture of light and wonder-fully processed for the final image. But the main reason why I love it is because of the human story it tells. The photography is outstanding.

You will feel proud of that Bengali girl.

49. I was surprised by the beauty and quality of the photography in this gallery. The portraits are my favorite. They are striking and interesting photos, though the photographs document modern day slavery. Nothing disgusting is shown, but seeing how exhausted the people look on all levels of functioning causes pity. I think her art brings us beyond ourselves into a shared experience of human nature.

For example, it is right to be 1 to other people. It is also right to look after the environment.

Some things are 2 wrong, too. For instance, we should not hurt or bully(欺负) others, nor should we litter. Rules often tell us what is right or wrong.. Rules can help the public make the right 3,and remain safe. Car drivers have to obey traffic regulations that tell them the right things to do on the road to avoid crashes. However I have learned that having one best friend is not the way to go. It's so much better to have many great friends. As I was coming into Middle School, I was really excited because my friend Jennifer was going to be in the same Middle School! At first things were great, she introduced me to her friend Amy and we had lots of fun together. Then things started to change. Jennifer was very controlling: I couldn't make new friends, and pretty soon being Jennifer's friend was a struggle. Jennifer wanted to be the "leader" of our little group. Amy and I were never partners with each other in class projects or gym; it was always, "Who gets the privilege(特权)of being Jennifer's partner." Amy and I both wanted to be Jennifer's number one. I always waited for Jennifer and Amy after classes. They chatted by Jennifer's desk as Jennifer packed her books up and I waited by the door. Sometimes when they left, they'd walk right past me. No "Thanks for waiting." No "Sorry we took so long." It was as if they couldn't even see me. After months of living through school this way, I had really changed. I was moody, depressed, lonely. I spent lots of days trying not to cry, I felt so left out. Finally, near the very end of the school year, I was so incredibly sick of having to battle for friendship. I stopped sitting with Jennifer at lunch and stopped waiting for her after class. It was tough at first, but now, I have tons of friends. We have fun and happy times together and I love them all to bits. It amazes me how easy our friendship is. There's no struggling to be on top. I wish Jennifer could understand. Maybe one day she'll look back at what happened and she'll change, but even though I lost a friend, I am a happier person. 21. What is the purpose of the writer writing this passage? A. to describe her school life B. to criticize the way Jennifer treated her friends C. to show her regret towards losing a friend. D. to advise girls to make many friends instead of one 22.What does the sentence “Things started to change” refer to? A. The writer lost interest in study. B. Lessons became more and more difficult. C. Being Jennifer’s friend beca me a struggle. D. The writer gave up the friendship with Jennifer. 23. What can be implied from the last paragraph?
