The word rubbish could lose its meaning because everything which goes into the dumps would be made into something useful. Even the most dangerous and unpleasant wastes would provide energy if nothing else. The latest project is to take a city of around half a million inhabitants and discover exactly what raw materials go into it and what go out. The aim is to find out how much of these raw materials could be provided if a plant for recycling waste were built just outside the city. This plant would recycle not only metal such as steel, lead and copper, but also paper and rubber as well.Another new project is being set up to discover the best ways of sorting and separating the rubbish. When this project is complete, the rubbish will be processed like this: First, it will pass through sharp metal bars which will tear open the plastic bags in which rubbish is usually packed; then it will pass through a powerful fan to separate the lightest elements from the heavy solids; after that founders and rollers will break up everything that can be broken. Finally, the rubbish will pass under magnets(磁铁), which will remove the bits of iron and steel;the rubber and plastic will then be sorted out in the final stage. The first full-scale giant recycling plants are perhaps fifteen years away. Indeed, with the growing cost of transporting rubbish to more distant dumps, some big cities will be forced to build their own recycling plants before long.十五年内英国不列颠其他国家也应该积极建设大型工业综合体,以回收废物。

Part I Reading Comprehension (30%) Directions: There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice.Nonverbal (非语言的) communication has to do with gestures, movements and closeness of two people when they are talking. The scientists say that those gestures, movements and so on have meaning which words do not carry. For example, the body distance between two speakers can be important. North Americans often complain that South Americans are unfriendly because they tend to stand close to the North American when speaking, while the South American often considers the North American to be "cold" or "distant" because he keeps a greater distance between himself and the person he is speaking to . The "eye contact" provides another example of what we are calling nonverbal communication. Scientists have observed that there is more eye contact between people who like each other than there is between people who don’’t like each other. The length of time that the person whom you are speaking to looks at your eyes indicates the amount of interest he has in the things you are talking about. On the other hand, too long a gaze can make people uncomfortable. The eyes apparently play a great part in nonverbal communication. Genuine warmth or interest, shyness or confidence can often be seen in the eyes. We do not always consider a smile to be a sign of friendliness. Someone who is always smiling, and with little apparent reasons, often makes us uneasy.1. According to the passage, nonverbal communication_________.A is a method often used by people who cannot speakB can tell something that words cannotC can be used to talk with people who cannot bearD is less used than words答案:B本题主要考查的是考生对文章定义的理解把握。

Big monopolies try to buy inventions and turn them to their own profits. When they fail, they resort to other tricks. Inventors have to overcome thousands of difficulties put in their path before they can see their dreams realized. When George Stephenson was experimenting with the stream engine, there was much opposition from the Parliament, the newspaper, and landlords. They claimed that the noise and the smoke would kill cows, horses and sheep, that the engine would burst or that hot coals from it would set fire to their houses. So it was a very difficult matter for George Stephenson to persuade the people that trains could go on smooth rails, could pull carriages and wagons full of people and goods, and that there was no great danger of accidents. However, he was able to do it, and the first train driven by Stephenson himself showed that the newly invented steam engine was a complete success.1. While the youth stood on the landing-place searching in his pocket for money, the ferryman lifted a lantern, by the aid of which, together with the newly risen moon, he took a very accurate survey of the stranger's figure. He was a young man of barely eighteen years, evidently country bred, and now, as it seemed, on his first visit to town. He was wearing a tough gray coat, which was in good shape, but which had seen many winters before this. The garments under his coat were well constructed of leather, and fitted tightly to a pair of muscular legs; his stockings of blue yarn must have been the work of a mother or sister, and on his head was a three-cornered hat, which in its better days had perhaps sheltered the grayer head of the lad's father. In his left hand was a walking stick, and his equipment was completed by a leather bag not so abundantly stocked as to inconvenience the strong shoulders on which it hung. Brown, curly hair, well-shaped features, bright, cheerful eyes were nature'sgifts, and worth all that art could have done for his adornment. The youth, whose name was Robin, paid the boatman, and then walked forward into the town with a light step, as if he had not already traveled more than thirty miles that day. As he walked, he surveyed his surroundings as eagerly as if he were entering London or Madrid, instead of the little metropolis of a New England colony.1.The story took place in ____.2. And the word "television" means "seeing far".Television works in much the same way as radio. In radio, sound is changed into electromagnetic (invisible light) waves which are sent through the air. Experiments leading to modern television took place more than a hundred years ago. By the 1920s inventors and researchers had turned the early theories into working models.Yet it took another thirty years for TV to become an industry. The influence of TV on the life of people is incalculable: it can influence their thoughts and their way of life. It can also add to their store of knowledge. Educational TV stations offer teaching in various subjects. Some hospitals use TV for medical students to get close-up views of operations. At first television programs were broadcast in black-and -white. With the development of science and technology, the problem of how to telecast them in full color was solved and by the middle 1960s the national networks were broadcasting most of their programs in color. The programs that people watch are not only local and national ones. Since the launching of the first communications satellite, more and more programs are telecast "live" from all over the world. People in San Francisco were able to watch the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo. And live telecasts now come from outer space. In 1969, the first astronauts to land on the moon televised their historic "moon walk" to viewers on the earth. Since then, astronauts have regularly sent telecast to the earth.1. It is often tempting to hurry the child beyond his natural learning rate这通常很容易让孩子超过他的自然学习速度, but this can set up dangerous feelings of failure and states of worry in the child但这可能会给孩子带来危险的失败感和担忧状态: This might happen at any stage这在任何阶段都可能发生. A baby might be forced to use a toilet too early一个婴儿可能会被迫过早地上厕所, a young child might be encouraged to learn to read before he knows the meaning of the words he reads. On the other hand, though, if a child is left alone too much, or without any learning opportunities, he loses his natural enthusiasm for life and his desire to find out new things for himself.Patents vary greatly in their degree of strictness towards their children. Some may be especially strict in money matters. Others are severe over times of coming home at night or punctuality for meals. In general, the controls imposed represent the needs of the parents and the values of the community as much as the child’s own happiness. As regards the development of moral standards in the growing child, consistency is very important in parental teaching. To forbid a thing one day and excuse it the next is no foundation for morality (道德). Also, parents should realize that “example is better than precept”. If they are not sincere and do not practise what they preach (说教), their children may grow confused, andemotionally insecure when they grow old enough to think for themselves, and realize they have been to some extent fooled.A sudden awareness of a marked difference between their parents’ principles and their morals can be a dangerous disappointment.在抚养孩子的过程中,每个父母都热切地注视着孩子的成长(学会) 在每一项新技能中,第一个说出来的词,第一个独立的词独立步骤,或开始阅读和写作。

Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.Passage OneQuestions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage. We all know that panic-stricken moment. You drop your mobile phone, frightened, as it drops towards the floor, fearing it will land screen-side down — with shattering results. But now Apple plans to spare you that worry, with an invention that will stop your iPhone hitting the ground face first. The technology giant was granted a patent last week on an invention that can detect when a phone is falling and ensure the screen doesn ’t hit the ground. The idea could also work with iPads and other devices.Apple ’s design features on-board sensors that measure the speed at which the phone is falling and predict when it will land and which side of the phone will hit the floor. If sensors calculate the screen or camera will hit the ground, a motor in the phone is caused to start working instantly. The motor then affects other parts of the device, making it turn quickly around a central point as it falls, so that it lands on a hard area. The effect is similar to how a falling cat always manages to land on its feet. What ’s more, the patent even includes a system that would avoid damage to the connector.Victor Seidel, a lecturer in science entrepreneurship at Oxford University, said, “This does what a lot of successful new approaches do: combine ideas in a way others had not considered. But integrating this idea into current slimline designs may be a challenge. As we go about our everyday lives, we mentally attempt to place people in terms of their statuses. For example, we must judge whether the person in the library is a reader or a librarian, whether the telephone caller is a friend or a salesman, whether the unfamiliar person on our property is thief or a meter reader, and so on.The statuses we assume often vary with the people we encounter, and change throughout life. Most of us can, at very high speed, assume the statuses that various situations require. Much of social interaction consists of identifying and selecting among appropriate statuses and allowing other people to assume their statuses in relation to us. This means that we fit our actions to those of other people based on a constant mental process of appraisal and interpretation. Although some of us find the task more difficult than others, most of us perform it rather effortlessly.A status has been compared to ready-made clothes. Within certain limits, the buyer can choose style and fabric. But an American is not free to choose the costume (服装) of a Chinese peasant or that of a Hindu prince. We must choose from among the clothing presented by our society. Furthermore, our choice is limited to a size that will fit, as well as by our pocketbook (钱包). Having made a choice within these limits we can have certain alterations made, but apart from minor adjustments, we tend to be limited to what the stores have on their racks. Statuses too come ready made, and the range of choice among them is limited.16. In the first paragraph, the writer tells us that statuses can help us ________.A) determine whether a person is fit for a certain jobB) behave appropriately in relation to other peopleC) protect ourselves in unfamiliar situationsD) make friends with other people17. According to the writer, people often assume different statuses ________.A) in order to identify themselves with others B) in order to better identify othersC) as their mental processes change D) as the situation changes18. The word “appraisal ” (Line 5, Para. 2) most probably means “________”.A) involvement B) appreciation C) assessment D) presentation19. In the last sentence of the second paragraph, the pronoun “it ” refers to “________”.A) fitting our actions to those of other people appropriatelyB) identification of other people ’s statuses终稿C) selecting one ’s own statusesD) constant mental process20. By saying that “an American is not free to choose the costume of a Chinese peasant or that of aHindu prince ” (Line 2-3, Para. 3), the writer means ________.A) different people have different styles of clothesB) ready-made clothes may need alterationsC) statuses come ready made just like clothesD) our choice of statuses is limitedPassage ThreeQuestions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage. After the violent earthquake that shook Los Angeles in 1994, earthquake scientists had good news to report: The damage and death toll (死亡人数) could have been much worse.More than 60 people died in this earthquake. By comparison, as earthquake of similar intensity that shook America in 1988 claimed 25,000 victims.Injuries and deaths were relatively less in Los Angeles because the quake occurred at 4:31 a.m. on a holiday, when traffic was light on the city ’s highways. In addition, changes made to the construction codes in Los Angeles during the last 20 years have strengthened the city ’s buildings and highways, making them more resistant to quakes.Despite the good news, civil engineers aren ’t resting on their successes. Pinned to their drawing boards are blueprints (蓝图) for improved quake-resistant buildings. The new designs should offer even greater security to cities where earthquakes often take place. In the past, making structures quake-resistant meant firm yet flexible materials, such as steel and wood that bend without breaking. Later, people tried to lift a building off its foundation, and insert rubber and steel between the building and its foundation to reduce the impact of ground vibrations. The most recent designs give buildings brains as well as concrete and steel supports. Called smart buildings, the structures respond like living organisms to an earthquake ’s vibrations. When the ground shakes and the building tips forward, the computer would force the building to shift in the opposite direction. The new smart structures could be very expensive to build. However, they would save many lives and would be less likely to be damaged during earthquakes.21. One reason why the loss of lives in the Los Angeles earthquake was comparatively low is that________.A) new computers had been installed in the buildingsB) it occurred in the residential areas rather than on the highwaysC) large numbers of Los Angeles residents had gone for a holidayD) improvements had been made in the construction of buildings and highways22. The function of the computer mentioned in the passage is to ________.A) counterbalance an earthquake ’s action on the buildingB) predict the coming of an earthquake with accuracyC) help strengthen the foundation of the buildingD) measure the impact of an earthquake ’s vibrations23. The smart buildings discussed in the passage ________.A) would cause serious financial problems终稿B) would be worthwhile though costlyC) would increase the complexity of architectural designD) can reduce the ground vibrations caused by earthquakes24. It can be inferred from the passage that in minimizing the damage caused by earthquakes attentionshould be focused on ________.A) the increasing use of rubber and steel in capital constructionB) the development of flexible building materialsC) the reduction of the impact of ground vibrationsD) early forecasts of earthquakes25. The author ’s main purpose in writing the passage is to ________.A) compare the consequences of the earthquakes that occurred in the U.S.B) encourage civil engineers to make more extensive use of computersC) outline the history of the development of quake-resistant building materialsD) report new developments in constructing quake-resistant buildingsPassage FourQuestions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage.“... The two big advantages I had at birth were to have been born wise and to have been born in poverty...It gave me one big advantage: none of my troubles or problems as an adult could throw me.”Sophia Loren was born in a charity ward for unmarried women in Rome in 1934. Her father Riccardo Scicolone officially recognized the child, but refused to marry the mother. Though her mother had a hard time raising her, Loren still has vivid memories of her younger years. “When I was a child, fear was common to my life — fear of having nothing to eat, fear of other children taunting me at school because I was illegitimate (私生的), and particularly fear of the big bombers appearing overhead and dropping their deadly burst from the sky.”Loren was a very young girl, when she saw the first Hollywood films. “I was filled with the feeling that that ’s what I was put on earth to do, to act, to let out whatever feelings I had inside.”However, it took a long time before Sophia was offered her first role in a film. She failed the screen tests one after the other, and it seemed as if there was no way for her to become an actress. What the cameramen could not see at first, was that her inner beauty made her stunning. Remembering the difficulties of the early days of her career, Sophia said, “I was so boldly confident about myself... I have never judged myself by other people ’s standards. I would get to wherever I was destined to go and try to alter my fate.”Sophia ’s acting career began at the age of eighteen in 1952 with her role in a film “ Africa Under the Seas ”. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet. Passage OneQuestions 16 to 20 are based on the following passage. There are two basic ways to see growth: one as a product, the other as a process. People have generally viewed personal growth as an external result or product that can easily be identified and measured. The worker who gets a promotion, the student whose grades improve, the foreigner who learns a new language –all these are examples of people who have measurable results to show for their efforts.By contrast, the process of personal growth is much more difficult to determine, since by definition it is a journey and not the specific signposts or landmarks along the way. The process is not the road itself, but rather the attitudes and feelings people have, their caution or courage, as they encounter new experiences and unexpected obstacles. In this process, the journey never really ends; there are always new ways to experience the world, new ideas to try, new challenges to accept. In order to grow, to travel new roads, people need to have a willingness to take risks, to confront the unknown, and to accept the possibility that they may “fail” at first. How we see ourselves as we try a new way of being is essential to our ability to grow. Do we perceive ourselves as quick and curious? If so, then we tend to take more chances and to be more open to unfamiliar experiences. Do we think we’re shy and indecisive? Then our sense of timidity can cause us to hesitate, to move slowly, and not to take a step until we know the ground is safe. Do we think we’re slow to adapt to change or that we’re not smart enough to cope with a newchallenge? Then we are likely to take a more passive role or not try at all. These feelings of insecurity and self-doubt are both unavoidable and necessary if we are to change and grow. If we do not confront and overcome these internal fears and doubts, if we protect ourselves too much, then we cease to grow. We become trapped inside a shell of our own making.16. A person is generally believed to achieve personal growth when .A.he has given up his drinking habitB.he has made great efforts in his workC.he is keen on learning anything newD.he has tried to determine where he is on his journey17. In the author’s eyes, one who views personal growth as a process would.A.succeed in climbing up the social ladderB.judge his ability to grow from his own achievementsC.face difficulties and take up challengesD.aim high and reach his goal each time18. When the author says “a new way of being” (Line 3, Para. 3)he is referring to .A. a new approach to experiencing the world B) a new way of taking risksC. a new method of perceiving ourselves D) a new system of adaptation to change19. For personal growth, the author advocates all of the following except .A.curiosity about more chances B) open-mindedness to new experiencesC) promptness in self-adaptation D) avoidance of internal fears and doubts20. What is the best title of the passage?A) A Product of Growth B) Both Aspects of GrowthC) A Process of Growth D) Growth-Product or ProcessPassage TwoQuestions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage.Generations of Americans have been brought up to believe that a good breakfast is one of life’s essentials. Eating breakfasts at the start of the day, we have all been told, and told again, is as necessary as putting gasoline in the family car before starting a trip. But for many people the thought of food first thing in the morning is by no means pleasure. So despite all the efforts, they still take no breakfast. Between 1977 and 1983, the latest year for which figures are available, the number of people who didn’t have breakfast increased by 33 percent-from 8.8 million to 11.7 million-according to the Chicago-based Market Research Corporation of America. For those who feel pain of guilt about not eating breakfast, however, there is some good news. Several studies in the last few years indicate that, for adults especially, there may be nothing wrong with omitting breakfast. “Going without breakfast does not affect performance,” said Arnold E.Bender, former professor of nutrition at Queen Elizabeth College in London, “nor does giving people breakfast improve performance.”Scientific evidence linking breakfast to better health or better performance is surprisingly inadequate, and most of the recent work involves children, not adults. “The literature,” says one researcher, Dr. Ernesto Pollitt at the University of Texas, “is poor.”21. The latest year for which figures could be obtained is ______.A) the year the author wrote the articleB) 1977C) any year between 1977 and 1983D) 198322. For those who do not take breakfast, the good news is that ______.A) several studies have been done in the past few yearsB) the omission of breakfast do es no harm to one’s healthC) adults have especially made studies in this fieldD) eating little in the morning is good for health23. “…nor does giving people breakfast improve performance” (in Line 13) means ______.A) anyone without breakfast does improve his performanceB) not giving people breakfast improves performanceC) having breakfast does not improve performance, eitherD) people having breakfast do improve their performances, too24. The word “literature” in the last sentence refers to _______.A) written works on a particular subjectB) stories, poems, plays, etc.C) any printed materialD) the modern literature of America25. What can be inferred from the passage is that _________.A) breakfast does not affect performanceB) Dr.Pollitt is engaged in research work at an institution of higher learningC) not eating breakfast might affect the health of childrenD) Professor Bender once taught college courses in nutrition in LondonPassage ThreeQuestions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage. One of the strongest reasons for the raising of the school leaving age (ROSLA) has been that it will bring us nearer to the ideal of “equal opportunity”.Many people like to think of our present system of schooling as providing plenty of steps up the ladder of success for clever children. It would be good to think that no one who is really bright can be missed out when the state system is apparently so thorough. It is obvious, for instance, that many children from less rich homes reach university or do well in other ways.Unfortunately, we now have plenty of evidence that many children of every level of ability do much less well than they could. For instance, during the years of national military service it was possible to test the intelligence of all male 18-20 year olds. Half of those soldiers who were placed in the two highest ability groups had left schools at 15.It has also been shown that the percentage of working class children going to university is almost the same now as it was in 1930. One study of 5000 children from birth to 21 years old indicated that up to half the bright pupils from working class homes left school when they reached 16 years old. Moreover, there is no difference in intelligence between the sexes, but far more boys than girls stay in education after 16.It is clear from this and much other evidence that many children are still leaving school too early to benefit from the prizes —money, social respectability, and interesting jobs, which higher education gives. It is clear too that the reasons why such children leave have much to do with their social circumstances. Their parents often need the extra money another wage-earner can bring in; they do not value education for itself because their own was probably dull and unhappy. It is not so much that they force their sons and daughters to leave school, rather that they tend to say, “It’s up to you”.26. It is hoped that ROSLA will give all children _________.A) a more enjoyable time at school B) the same chances in societyC) the right to a better school D) higher scores in intelligence tests27. People would like to think that __________.A) equal number of poor and rich children reach universityB) those with the least money get the best educationC) intelligent children are always chosen by the systemD) only clever children do well28. Working class children are felt to be at a disadvantage because _________.A) many of the clever ones leave school earlyB) fewer go to university than ever beforeC) more than half leave school when they are 16D) fewer boys than girls stay at school after 1629. Many children leave school early because _________.A) their social circumstances make them unhappyB) they are forced to work early by their parentsC) their schooling is a dull and unhappy experienceD) their parents don’t allow them to make their own decisions30. This article shows that equal opportunity in education___________________.A) is a thing of the past B) has greatly improved our societyC) is there for those who merit it D) has not yet been achievedPassage FourQuestions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage. In recent years, a growing body of research has shown that our appetite and food intake are influenced by a large number of factors besides our biological need for energy, including our eating environment and our perception of the food in front of us.Studies have shown, for instance, that eating in front of the TV (or a similar distraction) can increase both hunger and the amount of food consumed. Even simple visual cues, like plate size and lighting, have been shown to affect portion size and consumption.A new study suggested that our short-term memory also may play a role in appetite. Several hours after a meal, people's hunger levels were predicted not by how much they’d eaten but rather by how much food they'd seen in front of them—in other words, how much they remembered eating. This disparity (盖弃)suggests the memory of our previous meal may have a bigger influence on our appetite than the actual size of the meal, says Jeffrey M. Brunstrom, a professorof experimental psychology at the University of Bristol."Hunger isn't controlled solely by the physical characteristics of a recent meal. We have identified an independent role for memory for that meal," Brunstrom says. "This shows that the relationship between hunger and food intake is more complex than we thought."These findings echo earlier research that suggests our perception of food can sometimes trick our body’s response to the food itself. In a 2011 study, for instance, people who drank the same 380-calorie (卡路里)milkshake on two separate occasions produced different levels of hunger-related hormones (荷尔蒙),depending on whether the shake’s label said it contained 620 or 140 calories. Moreover, the participants reported feeling more full when they thought they'd consumed a higher-calorie shake. What does this mean for our eating habits? Although it hardly seems practical to trick ourselves into eating less, the new findings do highlight the benefits of focusing on our food and avoiding TV and multitasking while eating. The so-called mindful-eating strategies can fight distractions and help us control our appetite, Brunstrom says.31. What is said to be a factor affecting our appetite and food intake?A) How we perceive the food we eat. B) What ingredients the food containsC) When we eat our meals. D) How fast we eat our meals.32. communicate face-to-face,they convey information in several ways apart from by the words they use. Thus, how often they make eye contact and how long they sustain that contact can indicate their degree of intimacy(亲密),interest in or understanding of what they are communicating verbally.Their posture(姿势)—the way they sit or stand—can reveal attention, interest, disagreement or boredom. The distance they sit or stand from one another and the angle at which they do so can suggest friendship, hostility or respect. These and other forms of nonverbal(非口头的)communication are so pervasive that we usually scarcely notice them.Their importance quickly becomes apparent(明显的),however, when for some reason they are lacking or unclear. One occasion when most people notice the importance of nonverbal communication is when they are talking on the telephone. There is an unwritten rule of telephone conversations that the listener must supply frequent and regular confirmation that he or she is listening. This is done by saying“Aha, Mmhm.Yes,I see,”and so on.Failure to do this often enough may result in the speaker interrupting him or herself to ask if the other person is“still there.”In face-to-face conversation, this is unnecessary,as attention and understanding are conveyed silently, chiefly by eye contact and posture.Another situation where the importance of nonverbal communication becomes clear is duringcross-cultural communication. It is an instructive experience to travel in a foreign country whose culture is very different from one’s own.Do men shake hands, bow, touch, point, wink, and so on,or are some or all of these behaviors considered rude? How long can eye contact be maintained without indicating something more than polite interest? How close does one stand before being disrespectful or too intimate, how far away before being thought cold or hostile?Features like these can sometimes be more important in a second language than grammatical accuracy or a good accent(口音).31.People seldom notice the importance of nonverbal communication because__________.A.it is usually lackingB.it is usually unclearC.it is too apparentD.it is too widespread32.In face-to-face communication, you can tell whether the other agrees with you or not by all thefollowing except__________.A.the frequency of his eye contact with youB.the length of his eye contact with youC.the way he sits or standsD.the way he smokes33.In telephone conversation,__________.A.the listener must agree with what the speaker is sayingB.the listener must supply words of confirmationC.the speaker must frequently ask if the listener is still thereD.the speaker must frequently ask questions to catch the listener’s attention34.For a traveler in a foreign country the more important thing than verbal communication is__________.A.a good accent of that country’s languageB.a good command of the grammar of that country’s languageC.a good knowledge of the culture of that countryD.a good knowledge of the history of that country35.According to the passage,cross-cultural communication is an__________experience.A.instructiveB.embarrassingC.excitingD.enjoyingPassage2Internet use appears to cause a decline in psychological well-being,according to a research at Carnegie Mellon University.Even people who spent just a few hours a week on the Internet experienced more depression and loneliness than those who logged on(登录)less frequently, the two-year study showed. And it wasn’t that people who were already feeling bad spent more time on the Internet, but that using the Net actually appeared to cause the bad feelings.Researchers are puzzled over the results, which were completely contrary to their expectations. They expected that the Net would prove socially healthier than television, since the Net allows users to choose their information and to communicate with others. The fact that Internet use reduces time available for family and friends may explain the drop in well-being,researchers hypothesized(假设).Faceless, bodiless“virtual”communication may be lesspsychologically satisfying than actual conversation, and the relationships formed through it may be shallower.Another possibility is that exposure to the wider world via the Net makes users less satisfied with their lives.“But it’s important to remember this is not about the technology itself;it’s about how it is used.”says psychologist Christine Riley, one of the study’s sponsors(发起人).“It really points to the need for considering social factors in terms of how you design applications and services for technology.”36.It can be learned from the passage that___________.A.people having bad feelings spend more time on the InternetB.the Internet makes its users psychologically healthyC.Internet use may cause its users’depressionD.people use the Internet less frequently than before37.The fact that the Internet proved less socially healthy than television___________.A.was what the researchers had expectedB.went against the researchers’expectationC.was well understood by the researchersD.was a puzzle the researchers had solved38.According to the passage, one of the possible reasons why Internet use leads to a decline in itsusers’well-being is that___________.A.Internet users spend less time with their friends and familiesB.Internet users can’t get satisfaction from the InternetC.the Internet prevents its users from communicating with their familiesD.people can’t establish lasting relationships with others on the Internet39.In the last paragraph,Christine Riley points out that as to the decline in Internet users’well-being,___________.A.the technology itself should be held responsibleB.it is no fault of the technology itselfC.the blame lies with Internet usersD.the Net itself should take responsibility for it40.It is suggested in discussing problems caused by Internet use that___________.A.Internet users should spend less time on the InternetB.Internet users should have more conversation with their friendsC.social factors should be considered in devising applications for technologyD.a wider range of services should be made availablePassage3Banks are not ordinarily prepared to pay out all accounts;they relied on depositors(储户)not to demand payment all at the same time.If depositors should come to fear that a bank is not sound, that it cannot pay off all its depositors, then that fear might cause all the depositors to appear on the same day. If they did,the bank could not pay all accounts. However,if they did not all appear at once, then there would always be funds to pay those who wanted their money when they wanted it.Mrs.Elsie Vaught has told us of a terrifying bank run that she experienced. One day in December of1925several banks failed to open in a city where Mrs.Vaught lived. The other banks anticipated a run the next day,so the officers of the bank in which Mrs.Vaught worked as a teller(出纳员)had enough funds on hand to pay off as many depositors as might apply. The officers simply instructed the tellers to pay on demand.Next morning a crowd gathered in the bank and on the sidewalk outside. The length of the line convinced many that the bank could not possibly pay off everyone.People began to push and then to fight for places near the tellers’windows.Clothing was torn and limbs broken, but the jam continued for hours. The power of the panic atmosphere is evident in the fact that two tellers, though they knew that the bank was sound and could pay out all depositors, nevertheless withdrew the funds in their own accounts.Mrs.Vaught says that she had difficulty restraining herself from doing the same.41.A bank run occurs when__________.A.a bank is closed for one or more daysB.too many depositors attempt to draw out their money at one timeC.there is not enough money to pay all of its depositors at one timeD.employees of a bank take their own funds out of the bank42.What happened to some of the customers of Mrs.Vaught’s bank?A.They were injured.B.They lost their money.C.They had to leave part of their money in the bank.D.They were forced to put their money into other banks.43.The tellers in Mrs.Vaught’s bank were told to__________.A.explain why they could not pay out all depositorsB.pay out deposits as requestedC.assure customers that the bank was soundD.pay out money as slowly as possible44.The essential cause of a run on a bank is__________.A.loss of confidenceck of sufficient fundsC.crowds of peopleD.inefficient tellers45.According to the passage, the actions of the customers of Mrs.Vaught’s bank were influencedchiefly by__________.A.the ease with which they could obtain their moneyB.the confidence demonstrated by other customers of the bankC.the confidence that Mrs.Vaught demonstratedD.the failure of several other banks to openIII.Blank-filling(15%)One result of this practice is that the Japanese worker identifies closely with his company and feels__46__loyalty to it.By working hard for the company,he believes he is protecting his own future. It is not surprising that__47__to one’s company is considered a great__48__in Japan.A man is often prepared to put his firm’s interests before__49__of his immediate family. The job security__50__by this system influences the way Japanese employees__51__their work. They tend to think__52__terms of what they achieve throughout their career. This is__53__ they are not judged on how they are performing during a short period of time, perhaps when they are __54__pressure to increase company earnings. They can afford to take a longer__55__than Western workers. This marriage between the employee and the company,the__56__of lifetime employment, may explain__57__Japanese workers seem__58__to love the products their company is producing and why they are__59__to stay on after work, for little overtime pay,to__60__in earnest discussions about the quality control of their products.A.participateB.becauseC.intenseD.consequenceE.underF.virtueG.willingH.whyI.devotionJ.approachK.those L.guaranteed M.positively N.perspective O.inIV.Translation from Chinese into English(10%)61.It is said that those who are stressed or working overtime are____________________(更有可能增加体重).62.We look forward to_____________________________(被邀请出席开幕式).63.The manager never laughed;neither______________________(她也从来没有发过脾气).64.It is suggested that the air conditioner___________________________(要安装在窗户旁).65.The16-year-old girl decided to travel abroad on her own despite__________________(她父母的强烈反对).V.Writing(15%)Directions:For this part, please write a short essay on the topic of“Buying Books Online”.You should write no less than100words following the outline given below.1、网上购书成为时尚2、网上购书的优势3、我的看法Key to Vocabulary&ReadingI.Vocabulary1~5BCBAC6~10AADBA11~15ABAAD16~20DACDC21~25BADBD26~30ADCDBII.Reading Comprehension31~35DDBCA36~40CBABC41~45BABAD。
