The biggest change in the world today is technology. The reason why the world is getting smaller is that people can talk to each other more quickly than before with more

information.

The computer now has the information of a library of books on all subjects. By sitting at a computer, different software programs allow students the chance to learn about all subjects simply by asking the computer to find the information. The computer becomes the library. Students and parents are now learning what an important tool the computer has become for improving education.

Letters might take a few days or even a few weeks to be delivered. Technology has developed a fax machine where a letter can travel anywhere in the world immediately. This has changed the way people do business. Many computers can receive E-mail. This is like the fax letter. Often, businesses have a fax machine but homes do not. If a computer is in a home, it can receive E-mail messages from anyone in the world. It is like the telephone but it costs much less to receive messages.

The next generation will have computers in most homes and be able to send faxes and E-mail all over the world. In the future, the computer will be as common as the telephone or TV. Technology is changing the way people communicate with each other.

45. The world is getting smaller just because .

48. We can infer from the passage that .

A. the telephone is more common than the computer now

B. letters won't be found in the future

C. The computer will be widely used.

D. People can communicate with each other easily

C

On August 27, 2003, Mars was recorded as being just 34,646,418 miles away from

us. The planet moved closer to earth than at any time in the last 5,000 years. If that doesn't sound close, just remember that it was five times as distant only six months ago.

"You can't miss Mars, it's bright and red," said Myles Standish, an American astronomer.

Mars is so close because of something called "opposition". This means the sun, the earth and Mars are positioned in a straight line and, as a result, they're closer (remember, the shortest distance between two points is a straight line).

For the next few weeks the planet should shine brighter than any other star, apart from the moon and Venus(金星).

It won't be difficult to see Mars. You can use a telescope if you have one, but you won't need it. Mars will be so bright that even the tights(困难的处境) of the city shouldn't get in the way. All you need to do is to go outside and look up at the sky. Mars can be found a little to the south and a little to the east.

But the planet will not seem very big, it will shine like a coin seen from 500 feet away. Even though Mars is twice the size of the moon, it is 145 times as distant. And it might not be red either. If there are dust storms on Mars, it will look mostly gold. If you do see red, then you're seeing the surface of the planet.

Make sure you go outside and have a look: the next time Mars will be this close will be August 28, 2287.

Cool Facts about Mars:

The last time it rained on Mars was about 3 billion years ago. You'd have more time on Mars: The Martian day is 24 hours 37 minutes. What would you do with an extra half hour? Gravity is less on Mars than on the earth. So someone who weighs 100 pounds here would weigh only 38 pounds on Mars.

50. Why was Mars so close to us on August 27,2003?

A. Because something is called "opposition".

B. Because it has been moving to us in the last 5,000 years.

C. Because the sun, the earth and Mars are positioned in a straight line.

D. Because of some unknown reasons.

51. Which of the following is TRUE about Mars?

A. Mars will be the third brightest star in the night sky for the next few weeks.

B. For the next few weeks, Mars will be the brightest star in the night sky.

C. Mars will look red if there're dust storms on it.

D. Mars is 145 times larger than the moon.

52. If you stayed on Mars for a week, you actually stayed there for_.And if you weighed 46 pounds on Mars, you weight about_pounds on the earth.

A. less than 7 days; 110

B. six days and four more hours; 175

Hawking has left much for Chinese to think about.

British physicist Stephen Hawking, possibly the world's most famous scientist after Albert Einstein, gave lectures in Zhejiang and Beijing in August.

An illness left him unable to move any part of his body except for three fingers. But his continuing efforts in the field of science have made many young people take him as their idol (偶像).

His books, such as A Brief History of Time, become bestsellers in Chinese bookstores. "Hawking helps people expand their horizons and become interested in science," said Pan Yunhe, president of Zhejiang University.

Indeed, experts don't think it likely that Hawking's lectures and profound(深奥的) ideas will be easily understood by the average person. But he has certainly sowed the seeds of science among many young people.

And the "Hawking fever" caused by his visit has made people ask: How can China produce more top scientists like Hawking?

"Nurturing(培养) top scientists will take as much work to change society as to educate the scientists themselves," said Zhang Fan. Zhang has studied in the UK since 1999 and will be a sophomore (大学二年级学生) at Trinity College in October, 2002.

In Britain, Zhang said, teachers inspire students to have a general understanding of the subjects they are interested in. And they encourage students to develop new ideas, which help them to nurture their creativity.

In China, the Ministry of Education (教育部) has encouraged schools to provide quality education to tap (开发) students' potential (潜力).

"I hope teachers will pay more attention to helping us use our imaginations and solve problems on our own," said Lu Jie, a Junior Three students in Sanfan Middle School in Beijing.

57. From this essay _______ have made young people take Hawking as their idol.

A. the fact that Hawking is a famous physicist

B. Hawking's lectures in Zhejiang and Beijing

C. Hawking's continuing efforts in science

D. the fact that Hawking can just move three fingers

58. In paragraph 4, what's the meaning of "horizons" from the context?

A. Knowledge.

B. Sight.

C. The range of one's knowledge.

D. Mind.

59. The last three paragraphs mainly tell us _______ .

A. we should reform our education in order to nurture more top scientists

B. we have to do a lot of work to educate the scientists themselves

C. in order to nurture more good students, schools should provide quality education

D. to have more excellent scientists, teachers should give students their imaginations

60. In the writer's opinion, Hawking's visit will NOT _______ .

A. expand many people's horizons

B. help people become interested in science

C. do good to the education of China

D. help average people understand his profound ideas well

One possible version:

The students of our school had a discussion about whether listening test in the National Matriculation English Test should be kept or canceled. Some students think that listening test should not be canceled. They insist listening is among the four basic skills. We therefore can not ignore it. Besides, listening is one of the important channels for us to get information from the outside world. So it should be strengthened today when international cooperation is becoming more and more frequent. But others don' t agree. They think not everyone has to communicate with foreigners in the future. Moreover, listening test is unfair to the students in the areas where radio signals cannot be picked up effectively. And for certain reasons, there is a big difference in teachers and equipment between the countryside and the city.

But after his death, he achieved world fame. Today, Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh is recognized as one of the leading artists of all time. Now, 150 years after his birth on March 30, 1853, Zundert, the town of his birth, has made 2003 “The van Gogh Year” in his honor. And the van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, home to the biggest collection of his masterpieces, is marking the anniversary with exhibitions throughout the year. The museum draws around 1.3 million visitors every year. Some people enjoy the art and then learn about his life. Others are first interested in his life, which then helps them understand his art. Van Gogh was the son of a pastor(牧师). He left school when he was just 15. By the age of 27, he had already tried many jobs including an art gallery salesman and a French teacher. Finally in 1880, he decided to begin his studies in art. Van Gogh is famed for his ability to put his own emotions into his paintings and show his feelings about a scene. His style is marked by short, broad brush strokes(笔画).“Instead of trying to reproduce exactly what I have before my eyes, I use color more freely, in order to express myself more forcibly,” he w rote in a letter to his brother in 1888. Van Gogh sold only one painting during his short life. He relied heavily on the support from his brother, an art dealer who lived in Paris. But now his works are sold for millions of dollars. His portrait of Dr. Gacher sold for $89.5 million in 1990. It is the highest price ever paid for a painting. “I think his paintings are powerful and the brilliant colors in them are attractive to people,” said a Van Gogh’s fan. 1. These items cover the main study targets in this unit, such as skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing, the usages of vocabulary and grammar items, as well as doing activities in English.
