Downloading music over the Internet is pretty common among high school and college students. However, when students download and share copyrighted music without permission, they are violating the law.

A survey of young people’s music ownership has found that teenagers and college students have an average of more than 800 illegally copied songs each on their digital music players. Half of those surveyed share all the music on their hard drive, enabling others to copy hundreds of songs at any one time. Some students were found to have randomly linked their personal blogs to music sites, so as to allow free trial listening of copyrighted songs for blog visitors, or adopted some of the songs as the background music for their blogs. Such practices may be easy and free, but there are consequences.

Sandra Dowd, a student of Central Michigan University, was fined US$7,500 for downloading 501 files from LimeWire, a peer-to-peer file sharing program. Sandra claimed that she was unaware that her downloads were illegal until she was contacted by authorities. Similarly, Mike Lewinski paid US$4,000 to settle a lawsuit against him for copyright violation. Mike expressed shock and couldn’t believe that this was happening to him. “I jus t wanted to save some money and I always thought the

threat was just a scare tactic.” “You know, everyone does it,” added Mike.

The RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America), the organization that files lawsuits against illegal downloaders, states that suiting students was by no means their first choice. Unfortunately, without the threat of consequences, students are just not changing their behavior. Education alone is not enough to stop the extraordinary growth of the illegal downloading practice.

60. Why is it common for students to download copyrighted music?

A. They don’t think that they will be caught.

B. They want their friends to know that they are smart.

C. They think it is a good way to make some extra money.

D. They are against copyright protection over Internet music.

61. What does Mike mean by saying that “the threat was just a scare tactic”?

A. One should not be afraid of threats.

B. A lawsuit will result from the threat.

C. It is unfair to scare people with a threat.

D. No serious consequence will follow the threat.

62. What is RIAA’s attitude towards students’ illegal downloading behavior?

A. They believe that education will help greatly in protecting copyrights.

B. They profit from the fines illegal downloaders pay for copyright violations.

C. They like to sue students for downloading music illegally from the Internet.

D. They think that illegal downloading behavior needs tough measures to correct.

63. What’s the best title for this passage?

A. Copyright Violators, Beware!

B. How to Get Free Music Online!

C. A Survey of Students’ Downloading Habits

D. Eliminate Illegal Music Download? Impossible!

Today we tell about the expression, “apple pie order”. It means “in perfect order, very well organized”. Nobody is sure when and where the expression — apple pie order began. Some say that Scottish and English writers used the expression a long time ago. Others say it was first used in the northeastern American states known as New England. The housewives of New England cut their apples in even slices. Then they filled pie pans with them in an organized way, row upon row. As one writer said, the women of New England loved to have everything in its place. This perhaps explains why it is generally believed that the expression — apple pie order began in New England.

Another old expression describes the opposite condition — wild disorder. That expression is apple of discord. It comes from ancient mythology. The myth says that all the gods and goddesses were sitting around the table to celebrate the marriage of Thetis and Peleus. One of the goddesses, Discord, was a troublemaker. She threw a golden apple on the table to be given as a prize to the most beautiful goddess. It was not an easy decision to make. How could they choose among Juno, Minerva and Venus? Paris was given the task of deciding. He decided to give the golden apple to Venus. Juno and Minerva were very angry and threatened him. This, the myth says, began the long Trojan War.

At one time, the tomato was called a love apple. That was a mistake. This is how the mistake happened. In the sixteenth century, Spain imported the tomato from South America after Spanish explorers had landed there. Spain then exported the tomato to

Morocco. Italian traders carried it on to Italy. The Italian name for the tomato was pomo di Moro—apple of the Moors. When French growers imported it from Italy, they thought di Moro meant d’amour, the French word for love. And so pomo di Moro became the apple of love.

People believe many things about the apple. One belief is that it has great powers of keeping people healthy. A very common expression is “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” Another belief is based on fact. The expression is “One rotten apple spoils the barrel.” When an apple begins to go bad, it ruins all the other apples around it in the container. The expression has come to mean that one bad person in

a group can cause everyone to act badly.

67. The expression “apple pie order” is said to have connection with ________.

A. the way that Scottish and English writers use words

B. the way that the housewives of New England put apple slices in pie pans

C. the way that apples are cut in New England

D. the place where apple pies are baked

68. Of the following four countries, tomatoes were first grown in ________.

A. Spain

B. Italy

C. France

D. Morocco

69. Frenchmen called the tomato the apple of love because ________.

A. they imported it from Italy

B. Italians called it that way

C. they mistook the Italian word di Moro

D. they loved apple

70. If John is a troublemaker and several of his classmates have been affected by him, we may describe him as ________.

A. apple of discord

B. apple pie order

C. a love apple

D. a rotten apple

Our school is beautiful and I often walked around it with enjoyment. To my disappoint, some students litter about on the campus. What makes me angrier is that we are very proud of what they do as if they saved the world. To stop this situation become worse, I suggest immediately measures should be taken. For example, we can hold some theme classes meetings on loving the school and protect the environment. Signs should put up in the schoolyard.
