When I was watching a sports event yesterday, I met with an amazing sight. It was not a gold medal, or a world record broken, but a show of pure courage and determination.

The event was swimming. I watched a man dive off the blocks and knew right away that something was wrong. I'm not an expert swimmer, but I can tell a good dive from a poor one, and this was not exactly medal quality. When he resurfaced, it was evident that the man was not out for gold - his arms were waving in an attempt at freestyle.

I heard the crowd begin to laugh at this poor man who was clearly having a hard time. Finally he made his turn to start back. It was pitiful. He made a few desperate strokes (划水) and you could tell he was worn out. But in those few awkward strokes, the crowd changed. No longer were they laughing, but beginning to cheer. Some even began to stand and yell things like, "C ome on, you can do it!" He did. The crowd went wild.

Just a short year ago, he had never even swum, let alone race. His country had been invited to take part in the event. Even though he recorded the slowest time, this man gave more heart than any of the other competitors------a man that gave his all, knowing that he had no chance but to compete because of the spirit of the games. 21.We know from the passage that the swimmer .

A.had two competitors B.was not professional

C.had a wrong start D.didn't try his best

22.What can be learned from the last two paragraphs?

When I talked to some businessmen earlier today, one fellow asked me, “Would you give money to a homeless per son, even when you know he’s going to use it to buy alcohol?” I replied, “If all I was giving was money, it’ll be one thing. But for me, whenever I do give money, that’s just the wrapping (包装纸) . The real gift is hidden inside –it’s love. And l haven’t ever found any reason to limit gifts of love.”

By the end of the night, I decided to get some pizza. In front of me in line was a homeless-looking man. He was counting the few dollars bills in his hand, over and over again, until it was his turn to order. Just then, he told the young woman behind the counter, “I’ll have the full cheese pizza.” “Full?” she asked. “It’s really big.” she added, altho ugh what she really meant to say was that it’d be too expensive for him. “Yeah, the full” “$18.65,” she submitted. The bills he was counting weren’t going to make it. I wasn’t intending to get the whole pizza for him. But thinking back to my conversation with the business man, I realized that money was really just the wrapping.

I made my move. “Can you charge that pizza with my order” I said to the cashier. “Really?” the homeless-looking man said. “Really?” the young woman

behind the counter repeated. “Yes, really.” That confused man and I had a sweet silent moment. To his silent question of why I was doing it, I added, “Just pay it forward for someone else.” And he said, “Well, you know what? I was actually treating these five homeless guys out there.” He was actually paying it forward, in the first place. What an unexpected fortune to get a chance to be a part of a man’s act of kindness.

B. He is mean with his money.

A. The request from the homeless-looking man.

B. His sympathy for the homeless-looking man.

C. His recalling the talk with the businessman earlier that day.

D. The urgency from the young woman behind the counter.

30. Why did the homeless-looking man want to buy the whole pizza?

A. Because he was too hungry.

B. Because he wanted to pay it forward.

C. Because he wanted to treat his own five children.

D. Because he wanted to help some homeless people.

31. What is the best title for the passage?

A.Paying it forward B.Helping a homeless man

C.A talk with a businessman D.Money was just the wrapping

Can you believe your eyes? A recent experiment suggests that the answer to that question may depend on your age.

Martin Doherty,a psychologist at the University of Stirling in Scotland, led the team of scientists. In this experiment,Doherty and his team tested the perception(观察力)of some people, using pictures of some orange circles. The researchers showed the same pictures to two groups of people. The first group included 151 children aged 4 to 10,and the second group included 24 adults aged 18 to 25.

The first group of pictures showed two orange circles alone on a white background. One of the circles was larger than the other, and these people were asked to identify the larger one. Four-year-olds identified the correct circle 79 percent of the time. Adults identified t he correct circle 95 percent of the time.

Next, both groups were shown pictures where the orange circles, again of different sizes, were surrounded by gre y circles. Here’s where the trick lies. In some of the pictures, the smaller orange circle was surrounded by even smaller grey circles—making the orange circle appear larger than the other orange circle, which

was the real larger one. And the larger orange circle was surrounded by even bigger grey circles—so it appeared to be smaller than the real smaller orange circle.

When young children aged 4 to 6 looked at these tricky pictures, they weren’t fooled—they were still able to find the bigger circle with roughly the same accuracy as before. Older children and adults,on the other hand, did not do as well. Older children often identified the smaller circle as the larger one,and adults got it wrong most of the time.

As children get older,Doherty said, their brains may develop the ability to identify visual context. In other words, they will begin to process the whole picture at once:the tricky grey circles,as well as the orange circle in the middle. As a result, they’re more likely to fall for this kind of visual trick. 32.Doherty and his team of scientists did an experiment to evaluate______.

A. children’ s and adults’ eye-sight

B. people’s ability to see accurately

C. children’ s and adults’ brains

D. the influence of people’s age

33.When asked to find the larger circle,_____.

A. children at 6 got it wrong 79%of the time with no grey ones around

B. only adults over 18 got it right 95%of the time with grey ones around

C. children at 4 got it right about 79%of the time with grey ones around

D. adults got it right most of the time with grey ones around 34.According to the passage,we can know that_____.

A. a smaller orange circle appears bigger on a white background

B. an orange circle appears bigger than a grey one of the same size

C. a circle surrounded by other circles looks bigger than its real size

D. a circle surrounded by bigger ones looks smaller than its real size 35.Why are younger children not fooled?

A. Because they are smarter than older children and adults.

B. Because older people are influenced by their experience.

C. Because people’s eyes bec ome weaker as they grow older.

D. Because their brain can hardly notice related things together.

第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

Homework

Do maths problems 15 through 25. State the different forms of the verbs on page 50 of your French workbook. Read pages 12 through 20 of the Shakespeare play, and don’t forget to fill in the missing chemical symbols on the worksheet.

Sound like a list of your homework for the next few nights —or maybe even just for tonight? 36 It’s your teachers’ way of evaluating how much you understand what’s going on in class. And it helps strengthen important concepts. Here are some tips on how to do your homework.

37 It’s inviting to start with the easy things to get them out of the way. How ever, you’ll have the most energy and focus when you begin, so it’s best to

use this mental power on the subjects that are most challenging. Later, when you’re more tired, you can focus on the simpler things. If you get stuck on a problem, try

to figure it out as well as you can —but don’t spend too much time on it because this can mess up your homework schedule for the rest of the night. 38 But don’t pick someone whom you’ll be up all night chatting with, or you’ll never get it done!

Most people’s attention spans aren’t very long, so take some breaks while doing your homework. Sitting for too long without relaxing will make you less productive than if you stop every so often. Taking a 15-minute break every hour is

a good idea for most people. 39

Once your homework is done, you can check over it if you have extra time. Be sure to put it safely away in your backpack —there’s nothing worse than having

a completed assignment that you can’t find the next morning or that gets ruined

by a careless brother or sister. 40 Now you’re free to hang out.

A. Luckily, you can do a few things to do less homework.

B. Homework is a major part of going to school.

C. No one is expected to stay long, and people have very different learning styles.

D. If you need to, ask an adult for help or call or email a classmate for advice.

E. But if you’re really concentrating, wait until it's a good time to stop.

F. And no teacher still believes that “chewed by the dog” line —even when it's true!

G. When you start your homework, deal with the hardest tasks first.

It's designed to keep snow from piling up on top of houses. These houses are the symbol of the area but there aren't many of them left anymore. Eze in France France in itself is pretty, but its most attractive village is Eze. This community seems to be frozen in time. This village is the perfect melting pot of cultures because of its closeness to Nice. During the Middle Ages, it was desired by invaders(侵略者),and while this was a cause of sadness for the local people in the past, today the village enjoys its rich heritage(遗产).The architecture here is so diverse. Imagine that you could hear the voices of Birmingham in May 1963. This is what they might have said. Lucille Lyons My heart is fluttering (怦怦跳) in my chest. All around me kids talk nervously. Before we marched right into the area with the whites-only stores, I talked to one of my classmates. “You skipping school today, too?” he asked. I nodded yes. We see firemen standing there with hoses (水管), aimed right at us. Suddenly, water explodes from the nozzles (喷嘴). Some kids fall down. The firemen turn up their hoses even higher. Water beats my back and shoulders. I’ll be hurt and in big trouble when I ge t home, but I know I’m doing the right thing. Johnny Lee Baker There’s a crowd gathering at the church. A lot of them are kids, but they still need to be kept under control. My job is to use whatever force to keep the peace. The crowd is beginning to march, straight toward the white shopping area. “Stop!” I yell, “and no one will get hurt.” They don’t stop. Then I see Commissioner Connor signal to the firemen. The firemen turn their hoses on the crowd and start to spray. Bill Keys I’m watching history being made. As I take p ictures of the black children gathered for their march, I see firemen cross the street toward them. Connor is there yelling commands. The firemen spray the kids with water. I can’t believe my eyes, seeing such violence against children. I take a picture of them. This picture will make the world pay attention to what is happening here. 21. B From Snapchatting to sending emails, it seems like we are always on our phones. And while your parents’ or grandparents’ generations may disap prove of your smartphone “addiction”, there are some positive aspects of using the Internet. One of them is online friendships. With the popularity of technology among teens, it’s understandable that more and more often people are connecting online. It’s e asy to find girls (or guys) with similar interests as you. Some people feel embarrassed to admit that they have very real online friendships. But it’s not something to be ashamed of and a friendship should not be discounted because it was formed online. When chatting face-to-face, you might be afraid of being judged by the other person. Communicating online can sometimes help take away that fear. For people with anxiety or who are very shy, this provides a safe way for them to have open discussions with oth ers. If they don’t feel safe, or feel embarrassed, they can easily log off or block the person they were speaking with. Another great thing about online friendships is that it connects us with people and cultures that we may not have

A I have had all kinds of interesting neighbors since the early days of my life. When I was a baby I would stand in my wooden crib(婴儿床) and watch the world go by through the window. Some neighbors watched me watching the world go by with by big, wondering eyes and found me very interesting. They used to call me “the beauty at the window”. The early neighbors I could remember were from the second house I lived in. Peter and Paul were twins. We went to play school together although they were a year older than me. I well remember the Alsatian they had which ran into me when I was invited to their fifth birthday party. Needless to say, I was well-known for my loud screams after the party. But they said the pet was scared of my screams and didn’t appear until the party was over. Peter and Paul were the first boys who encouraged me to climb the gate. I could never tell the difference between boy and girl behaviors—I just did what I thought was fun. Not only did I have a great time performing that first climb, I also got my skirts dirty, and was criticized by my mother. The Japanese neighbors I had living in this same house were my favorite, as they introduced me to sea-salt baked shrimps (烤虾) which were so crisp that you could eat the shrimp totally. They gave me some seaweed for my birthday. Thankfully, no other member in my family enjoyed the seaweed as I did. Perhaps what my mother used to joke to me was true, that I was picked up out of the dustbin that belonged to a Japanese home. Maybe sometimes it is difficult to find good neighbors in this society. But all it takes is a spark(火花) to get a fire going. I have decided to be that spark wherever I live and pass love on to my neighbors. 21. We can guess "the Alsatian" in the twin brothers' home is ___________. A. a small child B. an interesting toy C. a dog D. a bicycle 22. From the passage we can know that the author___________. A. enjoyed the Japanese neighbors' cooking style most B. had difficulty getting on with the twin brothers' family C. was described as interesting when playing with boys D. had many neighbors that worked in restaurants 23. What can we infer from the passage? A. The author often moved to other places. B. Peter and Paul liked to play tricks on others. C. The neighbors the author had were good at cooking. D. The author had a good relationship with her neighbors. B Below are four ads on the website.Artful Experience It’s an artful experience even if you’re artistically challenged.
