Dear Abby,

This is my first letter to you, although I have been reading your column for many years.

I need

an outside opinion.

I am a grandmother in my 70s and have just returned from visiting my daughter, her hu sband and their three dearly loved children--all under the age of 5--and I'm upset with some of t heir

parenting ways.

For example:

They lock the doors to their children's bedrooms at night because the children might get out

of their beds and wander around the house, and we may not hear them."

If one child should get punishment, all three are punished, and if one child says a naug hty

word, all three are given hot sauce (辣酱汁) in the mouth.

I know these parents love their children very much, but are these ways of disciplining th em

wise? Please understand, it is not my aim to interfere (干涉).

--- Gram

Dear Gram,

Children's bedroom doors should not be locked. Should a flash fire break out, it would b e a

Punishing all the children when only one has earned the punishment is a good way to make

them grow up to hate each other.

Children who use "naughty" words should not be punished with hot sauce in the mouth-t hey

should be taught the proper and acceptable word to use instead of the "naughty" word.

--- Abby

Computer people talk a lot about the need for other people to become "computer-literate" But

not all experts agree that this is a good idea.

One pioneer, in particular, who disagrees is David Tebbutt, the founder of Computertown

UK. Although many people see this as a successful attempt to bring people closer to the c omputer, David does not see it that way. He says that Computertown UK was formed for just th e opposite

reason, to bring computers to people and make them "people-literate."

David Tebbutt thinks Computertowns are most successful when tied to a computer club but he insists there is an important difference between the two. The clubs are for people who ha ve some computer knowledge already. This frightens away non-experts, who are happier going t o compu- tertowns where there are computers for them to experiment on, with experts to encour age them and answer any questions they have. They are not told what to do, they find out. The computer experts have to learn not to tell people about computers, but have to be able to ans wer all questions people ask. People don't have to learn computer terms, but the experts have t o explain in plain

language. The computers are becoming "people-literate".

1. Which of the following is David Tebbutt's idea on the relationship between people and

computers?

A. Computer learning should be made easier.

B. There should be more computer clubs for experts.

C. People should work harder to master computer use.

D. Computers should be made cheaper so that people can afford them.

2. We can infer from the text that "computer-literate" means __________.

A. being able to afford a computer

B. being able to write computer programs

C. working with the computer and finding out its value

D. understanding the computer and knowing how to use it

3. The underlined word "it" in the second paragraph refers to the idea that computertowns ______.

A. help to set up more computer clubs

B. bring people to learn to use computers

C. bring more experts to work together

D. help to sell computers to the public

4. David Tebbutt started Computertown UK with the purpose of ___________.

A. making better use of computer experts

B. improving computer programs

C. increasing computer sales

D. popularising computers

5, Which of the following is true?

A. All the experts agree computer-literate.

B. Computers should be made cheaper so that people can afford them.

C. David Tebbutt is a pioneer who agrees that we need to make computer people-literate.

Australia, the last continent, was discovered by ships belonging to some European nation s in

the seventeenth century. These nations were less interested in changing it into a colony th an in

exploring it. As in the early history of the United States, it was the English who set up the settle- ments in Australia. This history and the geography of these two British colonies have so me

other things in common as well.

Australia and the United States are about the same in size, and their western lands are both not rich in soil. It was the eastern coast of Australia and America that the English first settl ed, and both colonies soon began to develop towards the west. However, this westward moveme nt took place more because the English were searching for better land than because the populati on was increasing. Settlements of the western part of both countries developed quickly after gold was

discovered in America in 1849 and in Australia two years later.

Although the development of these two countries has a lot in common, there are some s triking differences as well. Have you been thinking of planting a few trees on National Tree Planting Day? Be awar e: this

trees in school playgrounds, parks, city gardens and the countryside.

Volunteers in China have planted 35 billion trees since the first National Tree Planting D ay in

1981, the latest official statistics show.

But last week, reporters from Beijing Youth Daily visited a bush nursery in Fengning Cou nty

burned.

Local residents told the reporters that the trees died from lack of water very soon after t hey

were planted. So local people burned them and cleared the area for new trees to be plant ed this

year. On a label found in the tree ashes, a student wrote: "I hope this tree will grow up wi th me

the trees that really matters, rather than how many trees are planted. She suggests that vo lunteers

contact local organizations and ask professionals to look after the trees. Environmental prot ection organizations in Beijing are promoting a new project this March. It allows volunteers to ad opt an area by donating money to a special fund. Volunteers can choose an area on the map a nd let

New ways of building are being tried out everywhere. There are many new shows to wat ch!

In England, I saw a 17-story building made right on the ground. First, the workers dug a deep hole. They built the basement. This work was the same as on any building. From then on, the work

was not the same.

On the ground, the men set 40 big jacks (千斤顶). You know what a car jack does. It lift s a car. These big jacks were to lift each floor of the building. On top of the 40 jacks, the men first built a

roof. Yes, the roof of the building !

What next? The jacks lifted the floor one story high. Then the builders worked on this flo or. It

was not the bottom floor of the building. Not at all! It was the top floor. It was on the grou nd then. But it was going to be floor 17. The jacks lifted floor 17. Under it, the workers built floo r 16. They

built it fight on the ground, too.

When floor 16 was done, the jacks lifted it. Under floor 16, the men built floor 15. And s o it

went. The bottom floor of the building was made last.

The work went quickly. Under the roof, the men worked even in rain or snow. They didn't need

to climb to high places. And trucks brought things right to them.

It took only one man to work the jacks. He just pushed a button. Right away, the jacks b egan to

lift.

In the United States, also, some builders use big jacks. But the jacks are above the floor s, not under them. The floors are made of concerete (混凝土). They are made on the ground, o ne on top of

another. Strong posts run through them.

At first, the floors look like a big pile of pancakes, as the picture shows. Then jacks at th e top

of the posts lift each floor into place. The top floor makes the roof.

In Texas, I saw a roof made in a new way. A helicopter flew over the building, again an d again. Each time, it stopped to put a piece of the roof into place. The helicopter was like a bi rd building a

nest.

What a funny way to make a roof! But the helicopter built in one morning. To make a ro of like

第③段中连举三个例子,是为了说明_________________________________。 (4分) 说明方法( )作用:_________________________________
