Learning Chinese could very well be one of the most important decisions you ever make. Chinese is fast becoming the language to learn in the 21st century. With the world’s largest population and a rapidly growing middle class, China stands to become the engine of the world’s economy in the coming years and decades. Most people want to know how things are made. They honestly admit, however, that they hardly know a thing when it comes to understanding how a piece of music is made. Where a composer（作曲家）begins, how he manages to keep going – in fact, how and when he learns his trade – all are covered in complete darkness. The composer, in short, is a man of mystery（神秘）.

If you exhibit（显出）positive personality such as honesty and helpfulness, the chances are that you will be perceived（感觉）as a good-looking person, for a new study has found that the perception of physical attractiveness is influenced by a person’s pe rsonality. The study, led by Gary W. Lewandowski, Jr, found that people who exhibit negative personality, such as unfairness and rudeness, appear to be less physically attractive to observers.
In the study, the participants viewed photographs of opposite-sex individuals and rated（评定）them for attractiveness before and after being provided with information on personality. After personality information was received , participants also rated the desirability（渴望）of each individual（个体）as a friend and as a dating partner.
Information on personality was found to greatly change perceived desirability, showing that cognitive（认知）processes and expectations modify judgments of attractiveness.
“Perceiving a person as having a desirable personality makes the person more su itable in general as a close relationship partner of any kind,’’ said Lewandowski.
The findings show that a positive personality leads to being viewed as more physically attractive. The study reproduces a more typical context（情境）in which seeing the person’s appearance happens before learning about his/her personality and shows that perceptions of a person’s physical attractiveness may change over time because of their positive or negative personality.
“This research provides a more positive alternative by r eminding people that personality goes a long way toward determining your attractiveness; it can even change people’s impressions of how good-looking you are,” said Lewandowski.
The study is published in the December issue of Personal Relationships.
