【乙】周武王打败殷商后，把姬姓子弟分封在巴地，授予官职，在江州建都，成为南方诸侯的首领。周朝末年，巴国发生叛乱。将军蔓子性情刚毅勇猛，精通军事，日夜想办法平
乱。于是向楚国请求军队支援，允诺给楚国三座城池。楚王最终救援了巴国，蔓子也亲自披上盔甲，拿起武器参战。巴国叛乱平定后，楚国的使者来要求兑现许诺的三座城池。蔓子说：“借助楚国的军力，消除我国的灾难，确实许诺给楚王城池，但巴国的土地不能分割。宁愿死，把我的头颅提给楚王谢罪，城池也不能给他。”于是自杀殉国，将头颅给了楚国的使者。楚王感叹说：“如果我能得到像蔓子这样的臣子，还要城池干吗！”于是用最尊贵的上卿丧礼的规格埋葬了他的头颅。巴国埋葬他的身躯，也用了上卿丧礼的规格。
