Willie Stewart still remembers his first day of kayaking through the Grand Canyon. He was getting bounced around in the roughest white water he had ever seen. There was nothing the river threw at him.

There he was in a 40-pound boat, with only a few months of training and one arm. Tied to his left

shoulder was a prosthetic limb (假肢) that he’d had for just about a week. The plan was to paddle (划) for 20 days over 227 miles of the roughest white water in the United States. It was one of the most remarkable adventures that the Grand Canyon had ever seen.

It started with a casual phone call in the spring of 2005. A good friend, Mike Crenshaw, finally got a permit from the National Park Service to lead a private party of 16 boaters down the Colorado River that coming August. He had a slot open for Willie, “Was he interested?”

“It was the chance of a lifetime,” Stewart said. He had been waiting years for this trip to happen. “How could I refuse?”

But before they set off, Stewart had a couple of things to take care of. He had to get a white-water kayak, learn how to use it, and get an arm.

For most of his life, the rugged 45-year-old man has lived with only his right arm. He lost his left arm in a horrible accident when he was 18. Stewart was doing a summer construction job in Washington, D. C. The trailing end of a rope he was carrying got twisted in an industrial fan. Before he could react, the fan reeled in the rope tight and cut his arm just above the elbow.

He became a bitter young man, angry at the unfairness of what had happened, and often got into fights. In time, he learned to channel his rage into sports. He joined a rugby team, established a reputation as a fearless player and eventually was elected captain. His days of rage long gone, he found peace and purpose in his life.

Perseverance is the key to success. After thousands of efforts to make the electric light bulb, Thomas Edison said, “I haven?t failed, I?ve identified 10,000 ways that it doesn?t work.” Helen Keller, Marie Curie and an endless list of other great achievers found that success inevitably arrives for everyone who perseveres.

The following are some tips for persevering:

Clarify (弄明白) your goal. Base it on your passion, needs and abilities. Know why you want your goal and how you and others will benefit.

State your goal in the present. Write desired outcomes, what you want to accomplish. Be detailed, specific and positive.

Intend to achieve your goal. Outline your goal, strategies and timeline (活动时间表). Know resources that can help you attain your goal, such as people, associations and the Internet. Break the goal into small steps.

Develop support systems. Meet regularly with positive, encouraging people who support your goal and celebrate your achievements. Select other sources of positive reinforcement, such as books or tapes with uplifting themes.

Maintain optimism. Reinforce the positive in yourself and others. Expect good things. Replace negative thoughts or statements with positive ones. Keep a diary of each day?s good experiences. Focus on what you can do. Acknowledge your accomplishments. Judge your accomplishments against personal standards of self-improvements.

Have the coura ge of your convictions. Don?t change for others or compare yourself with others. Develop the will to risk. Don?t fear mistakes.

Research your goal to reduce negative outcomes. For example, interview successful people who have achieved similar goals. Learn from their mistakes.

Live in the present. Don?t worry about what might happen. V iew mistakes as opportunities to grow.

Believe you?ll achieve your goal. When your mind, emotions and activities focus on your goal, you can achieve the extraordinary.

There are many opinions on what creative drama is and should be, and my definition here should be just one. In essence, creative drama is dramatic activities which have the experience of the participants as the goal. This differs from theatre classes in which preparation for a performance is the objective. Creative drama is usually reserved for children of four to nine years old — ages or stages of development when participants can benefit from dramatic experience if there is no pressure to perform.

Creative drama can include dramatic plays, story creations, imagination journeys, theatre games, music and dance. “Let?s pretend” is the norm in creative drama classes, not just a child?s game. Because the emphasis in creative drama is a process rather than a product, teachers have the freedom to take as much time as needed with their classes. When a student prefers to watch rather than participate because of shyness or fear, a teacher can allow it. I remembered a girl named Melissa, who was reluctant to join in acting out stories. I let her watch the other children. Little by

little, Melissa learned that she was “safe” in class. Towards the end of the summer, Melissa began joining in the stories the class created. The teacher can become a participant and let the children lead the activities instead of being guided through them.

Creative drama can help children learn about emotions, problem solving, and relating to other people. Through their experiences with drama, students develop their imaginations and their confidence. One of the most special things about creative drama is that there are no “wrong” answers — through pretending, animals can talk, kids can travel to outer space, and the sky can be green while the grass is blue. Use the ideas in this section to work magic in your classroom.

63. What is the main idea of the first paragraph?

A. The process of dramatic activities.

B. The goal of creative drama.

C. The definition of creative drama.

D. The difference between creative drama and theatre classes.

64. What is the author?s attitude towards theatre classes?

A. Positive.

B. Suspicious.

C. Negative.

D. Neutral.

65. What is the role of a teacher in a creative drama activity?

A. Creating all stories that are to be acted out by children.

B. Being a judge to decide whether the imagination is right.

C. Being an instructor to lead children to act out drama.

D. Joining in the activity as a common participant.

66. What is the characteristic of creative drama?

A. Anything imagined or created is acceptable in creative drama.

B. The emphasis in creative drama classes is guiding.

C. There?s no pressure or preparation in the experience of activities.

D. It is reserved for children who have difficulty in communicating.

67. What can NOT children benefit from creative drama?

A. Obtaining confidence and overcoming shyness.

B. Learning to keep their emotions under control.

C. Getting some freedom to imagine and create something.

D. Improving the ability to deal with other people and solve problems.

D

Medical books are filled with studies on how mothers’mental state influences their children and postpartum depression(产后抑郁)in women has been recognized as far back as the fourth century BC. However, a new research study “challenges that rather traditional view that the father is a distant figure ” to the child, said Dr. Jonathan Evans, a senior lecturer in psychiatry.

British and U.S. researchers who analyzed records on 8,430 fathers found nearly 4% experienced anxiety, hopelessness and other signs of depression eight weeks after the births of their babies.

By the time the kids were three and a half, fathers who had been depressed in the first few months of their lives were twice as likely to be anxious, “worried about many things, including fighting with other children or experiencing other emotional and behavioral problems”.

And the association was stronger in boys than in girls. Studies have shown depression affects mother-baby bonding; women are less able to recognize cues(暗示)from their children and they can be more critical and hostile. This could also be true for men. As well, research suggests fathers

spend more time with baby boys than baby girls. “Their sons are getting more of whatever may be happening,” said Oxford University psychiatrist Dr. Paul Ramchandani, the study?s leading author. “We also know that boys may be more sensitive to a whole load of problem s at that particular time in their lives.”

The findings need to be confirmed, but Dr. Ramchandani said, “before this study, no one has looked at how a new father?s emotional state affects his baby?s well-being years later. Fathers are sometimes kept away from the nursery and from developmental theories under the argument that men lack the …motherly instinct?, understood as an inborn quality which supposedly makes mothers more sensitive to their babies than fathers are. Fathers are important, and we need to know more about why fathers are important.”

68. The traditional view that the father is a distant figure to the child actually means that _____.

A. the father doesn?t know how to deal with the life after the baby is born

B. the father doesn?t look afte r the baby as much as the mother

C. the father?s emotional state doesn?t have much influence on the baby

D. the father doesn?t feel close to the newly-born baby

69. The underlined word “This” in the fourth paragraph refers to _____.

A. fathers? spending more time with baby boys

B. the recognition of the cues from children

C. the dislike of newly-born babies

D. depression weakening father-baby bonding

70. The passage may lead us to believe that __________.

A. women are receiving more attention and care than men in research

B. girls are not sensitive to the surrounding problems

C. the findings of the new research have been widely accepted

D. fathers? influence on the early development of children is undervalued

71. What is the main idea of the passage?

A. Parents have a great influence on the development of their children.

B. Fathers? depression may have a great influence on their kids? behaviors.

C. Fathers are playing a more important role in children?s development.

D. Children?s response towards their parents? depression.

A growing number of business travelers are using their cell phones and other technologies to avoid extra charges for Internet access and telephone calls. “I do not use the telephone in hotels for fear of what they will charg e,” said Kathie Nunley, an educational psychologist in Amherst. “I have a personal motto that I never pay for the Internet in hotels.” Some travelers said they would only stay at hotels that provide Internet and phone services for free.

For hotels, a once-lucrative profit center is disappearing. Joe McInerney, the president of the American Hotel & Lodging Association, said phone charges were “a huge moneymaker”, but now “everybody has a cell phone attached to their ears,” and hotels “make almost zero”. “Int ernet access charges don?t generate much income,” he said, “because service providers must be paid. If they make $1 on a guest, they?re lucky.”

More hotels are offering Internet access. The American Hotel & Lodging Association found that about 90 percent of 9,300 hotels that responded to its recent survey offer Internet access, a big jump from 50 percent in 2004. The survey also found that free local phone calls are becoming

more common. Such a policy is in effect at 75 percent of the hotels.

USA TODAY randomly chose a dozen hotels in 12 cities and requested their Internet and phone rates. Internet access charges were free at five hotels, all with inexpensive room rates. Rates ranged to $13 daily at the Sheraton Waikiki in Honolulu. Four of the hotels with free Internet access offered free local phone calls, while the Waldorf-Astoria in New Y ork had the highest local phone charge, $1.95 for up to 60 minutes, and a high long-distance rate, $9.99 for the first minute and 79 to 99 cents per additional minute. The Sheraton Waikiki charged $9.44 for the first minute for a long-distance call and $1.50 per additional minute.

72. According to the passage, the number of business travelers who pay for Internet and phone services in hotels is _________.

A. increasing

B. decreasing

C. the same as before

D. leveling off

73. According to the second paragraph, we can know that_______.

A. phone charges in hotels will bring in lots of money

B. phone charges in hotels used to bring in lots of money

C. most hotels will cash in on their Internet access

D. the U.S. hotels provide phone charges and Internet access for free now

74. In the survey, _______ hotels in 2004 provided Internet access.

A. 3,720

B. 8,370

C. 4,650

D. 9,300

75. It can be inferred from the passage that _______.

A. more and more people have their own computers

B. more and more hotels provide free services forphones and Internet access

C. the Sheraton Waikiki has the highest local phone charge

D. the capital revenue of Internet service providers will be greatly affected

书面表达:

One possible version:

Dear David,

I can understand how you feel. When I was young, I had the same experience as you do. But after I talked with my parents heart to heart, we had a better understanding of each other. So try to communicate with your parents to let them know that you are wise enough to manage your own business well. To understand them better, always put yourself in their position. Don?t you think that all parents in the world love their children even though they are sometimes strict and serious? If you can spend your time and money more wisely, I?m sure that your parents will trust you and you will enjoy more freedom.

By the way, it?s understandable that your parents ask you to put your studies in the first place.

I hope my advice is of some help to you.

Y ours,

Linda

W: Oh, hello Peter. How lovely to see you again. Y ou haven?t changed a bit! I was hoping you might be here but I wasn?t sure. It was a pity that I couldn?t come as I?d originally planned.

M: Oh, that doesn?t matter. How are you feeling?

W: Well, pretty tired. It?s a long time to be in a plane and 1 always find it difficult to sleep.

Most of the time I read and watched the film.

We had a slight delay before take-off, but I think we made up most of the lost time. We only had one stop too, so that made the journey shorter.

Text 10

This is Bruce Ward for WNFD News. There was a serious fire at the Plaza Hotel this afternoon. It started at 3:10 in the kitchen on the first floor.

When reporters arrived at the hotel at 3:25, the first and second floors were on fire, and smoke was coming from the third- and fourth-floor windows. People were standing at the windows and yelling for help, and firefighters were using ladders to rescue them.

Some people had bad burns, and ambulances arrived to take them to the hospital. While firefighters were rescuing guests, one man jumped from a second-floor window and broke his leg. By 4:00 the fire was under control. The cause of the fire is still unknown.
