Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or

unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.

(A)

I received a request from Hawaii. A vision-harmed woman whose husband was sensitive to dog hair, had written to our centre with the hope that we had an allergy-free (不引起过敏的) guide-dog.

"Piece of cake," I thought. The standard poodle(狮子狗), a trainable working dog with tightly curled furs, was probably the most suitable breed. Although our centre bred and used Labradors (拉布拉多狗) , I did not anticipate any difficulties in finding a suitable poodle.

It turned out that reality never comes along with my best hopes. In desperation, I decided to cross-breed a standard poodle with one of our best-producing Labradors. The mating was successful, but it produced only three puppies. We sent coat of each puppy to the Hawaiian couple and the husband found one that was allergy-free. At last we were getting somewhere, but a big job lay ahead. The puppy had to grow up and prove suitable for guiding before it went to be compatible with the vision-impaired client. We had a long way to go.

With a three to six-month waiting list for people wishing to get our puppies, I was sure that we would have no problem placing our three new crossbred puppies with a family. But I was wrong again. It seemed that no one wanted a crossbred puppy and the customers only have their eyes laid on pure breeds regarding half-blooded something as a inferior kind. Time was running out as the puppies needed to be placed in homes and socialize. Otherwise they would miss the chance to become guide dogs. In order to attract people to adopt the puppies, I stopped calling them "crossbreeds" and introduced the term" Labradoodle" instead. It worked!

During the weeks that followed, our centre was inundated with calls from excited people. The publicity of the new designer dogs went national, and then international. With such an overwhelming response, I knew we were successful and I continued training sultan, the original non-allergy puppy. He eventually went to Hawaii, amid intense coverage, where as the world's first Labradoodle, he bonded beautifully with his new owner and her allergic husband.

65. Why did the author cross-breed a new kind of dog?

A. Because he works with dogs and tries to do research on dogs.

C. Because he wanted to produce a kind of designer dog.

A. Because they were designed mainly for vision-impaired customers.

B. Because customers don't believe they can work well as guide dogs.

C. Because they look down upon cross-bred dogs.

D. Because these dogs are too expensive and hard to raise.

67. How did the author do to change the customers' attitude?

Research on embryonic stem cells (胚胎干细胞) is debatable because it requires the destruction of live human embryos.

Supporters find it easy to minimize the significance of this fact because the embryos are only a few days old—nothing more than ''blastocysts (胚泡)".

But if it's OK to destroy 5-day-old embryos to further scientific inquiry, is it OK to destroy embryos that are five weeks old? Five months? Eight months? Science can't answer that question.

You don't have to be part of the pro-life group to have concerns about this kind of scientific inquiry. James Thomson, the University of Wisconsin biologist has said, "If human embryonic stem cell research does not make you at least a little bit uncomfortable, you have not thought about it enough." However, the president's new order suggests we should not think too much.

Recently, supporters of embryonic stem cell research called on president to allow experiments using …surplus(多余的)?fifty frozen embryos in fertility clinics, arguing that they would be disposed of anyway. But Obama didn't limit his new policy to these fertilized eggs.

On the contrary, he left open the possibility of funding studies using embryos created specifically so their cells can be harvested. He did, however, reject another option. "We will —ensure," he said, "that our government never open the door to the use of cloning for human reproduction. It is dangerous, profoundly wrong and has no place in our society, or any society."

But this position is hard to square with his professed (声称的) approach. On one hand, the president says his policy is "about letting scientists do their jobs, free from pressure". On the other, he will use pressure to keep them from doing reproductive cloning.

What this policy means is simple: It may be permissible for scientists to create cloned embryos and kill them. It's not permissible to create cloned embryos and let them live. Their cells may be used for our benefit, but not for their own.

It's the policy that is risky not just to days-old human embryos. The rest of us are sure to receive important medical benefits from this research one day. But we may lose something even more important in a moral sense. ,

72. It's implied in the fourth paragraph that pro-life group ________.

C. agree with James Thomson's opinion

D. rarely think of the consequences of embryonic stem cell research

B. In Obama's policy, embryonic researchers can only use surplus embryos in fertility clinics.

C. President Obama hasn't expressed his attitude toward human reproductive cloning.

D. The Research on embryonic stem cells may bring people great medical benefits in the future.

When the city manager of troubled Stockton, California, had to tell city council members why it was on track to become the biggest American city yet to go bankrupt (破产), it took hours to get through the list. Stockton is spending some $30 million a year to pay for them, but it has less than 70 cents set aside for every dollar of benefits its workers expect. Some public pension experts think they know why pensions were not on the city manager's list. They see the hidden hand of California's giant state pension system, known as Calpers, which administers hundreds of billions of dollars in

state law bars any reduction in pensions — and not just for people who have already retired. State law also forbids cuts in the pensions that today's public workers expect to earn in the future, Calpers says, even in cases of severe financial distress. Workers at companies have no comparable

Directions: Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible words.

A commercial transaction, in its simplest form, involves a customer paying for goods or services. But these days, that is just the first step. Businesses want your opinion of them, too, and their requests for feedback now seem to come with every purchase.

Prime reason for the trend is that software companies like SurveyGizmo and QuestionPro have made it possible for small companies to create customer surveys at a small part of the cost of traditional surveys. Out of desperate thirst to lock in customer loyalty, businesses of all sizes see surveys as a window into the emotional world of their customers which serve like a database that will offer guidance in that field.

Consumer patience may be fraying with the surveys. The constant bothering has led to a condition known as survey tiredness and falling response rates. The declines can be reasoned from two angles. The frequent requests with no incentives (奖励) just have people stop doing it. In the old days, you felt as though you had been selected to represent the community. But this is the information age, and people know their information is worth something.

Another reason sticks with the survey itself. Many businesses, often against the advice of the experts they have hired to construct their surveys, cannot resist the temptation to ask, ask and ask yet again. Angry consumers, assured that it will take only five minutes, often complain that they approach the 10-minute mark on a survey which have too many items.

To fight survey tiredness, companies are pressing consumers with renewed material urge. On their register receipts, stores like Walmart include a Web address and an invitation to fill out a survey, with the chance to win a prize. At Staples, the prize is a $5,000 store card. In the auto industry, which tries to measure customer satisfaction at every possible stage, from the first tentative Web search to the last service visit, surveys will finally fall into performance assessment on staff of different levels. No wonder dealers sometimes throw in a free tank of gas or a free oil change as a quid pro quo to get a favorable review in their dealership's satisfaction survey.

(Note: Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN TEN WORDS.)

81. Why do all companies want to know about customers' feelings?

82. Two reasons for customers' dislike to fill out surveys are ________.

The passages will be read twice, but the questions -will be spoken only once. When you hear a question, read the four possible answers on your paper and decide which one would be the best answer to the question you have heard.

Questions 11 through 13 are based on the following passage

According to the research findings published recently, people who regularly work 11 hours or more each day are more than twice as likely to experience depression than their colleagues who stick with an eight-hour work day.

During the 5-year study on 2000 London office workers, other factors, such as smoking, alcohol consumption, and general health are controlled as these factors are believed to also have effects on people's depression state.

According to the research, long working hours affect us not because of the pressure and intensity of work itself. They affect us because we don't have enough time for all the other things we need for good mental health, such as good quality sleep, relationships, and opportunities for rest and exercise. Every time we squeeze more work in, many of us will be squeezing something else out.

Besides, a previous study by the same researchers also found that overtime work was linked with a 60 percent increase in heart disease.

Questions:

11. Which of the following factors is not mentioned to affect one's depression state?

12. Why does overtime work make people depressed? :

13. What is the passage mainly about?

Questions 14 through 16 are based on the following passage

What happens to a. town when its people won't pay taxes to keep it going? The tiny town of Loyalton, South Dakota of America, actually closed down.

From the very beginning, railroads were being built across the West and it was the railroad that gave Loyalton its start. The town never grew very big, but there was always plenty of activity. In the early 1900's Loyalton was still a busy little town. About 200 people lived there. The town had grocery stores, meat markets, as well as a restaurant and an iron company.

In the 1920's, however, hard times came to Loyalton. A fire in 1930 destroyed several buildings and most importantly, a tornado in 1933 made the biggest damage, which marked the beginning of everything. From then on, people began to move out. By 1975, the high school and post office had closed.

By 1982, only two buildings remained on the main street. Only five residents stayed. But all five were retired people who couldn't afford even the small amount of money to run Loyalton. Therefore, Loyalton finally will disappear from the map of South Dakota.

Questions:

14. How did Loyalton grow into a small town at beginning?

15. What was the fatal disaster for the gradual disappearance of Loyalton?

16. Why did the last five residents decide to let the town disappear?

W: Specialize in waist problems. OK, I have written it down. And do you have a contact number? M: That's 5673. Oh no that's my old number and my new home number is 66053901. I have just had it connected.

W: OK sir. That's pretty much the information we need.

Blanks 21 through 24 are based on the following conversation:

W: Hey, Jack. How did you spend your weekend?

M: Well. I went to the Empire State Building. It's amazing.

W: Yeah, the 102-story landmark had been the world's tallest building for 40 years, from its completion in 1931 until the construction of World Trade Center was completed in 1972.

M: And it's published in its pamphlet that the Empire State Building has undergone a $550 million refreshing, to transform the building into an energy efficient structure.

W: Yeah, now the building has become one of the most famous tourist attractions in the US.

M: And when I went there, it was crowded. But can you imagine when it was opened much of its office space went without being rented.

W: Why was that?

M: Partly because of the great depression at that time but the real reason is its poor location, which placed it far from public transportation.

W: Oh I see.

M: However, its Observation deck has always been a success ever since its opening.

W: Yeah, people from all over the world gathered there taking pictures and having a bird's eye view of New York. Are there other legends about the building?

M: I guess not very good stories. Over the years, 30 people have committed suicide from its top, which cast a shadow on the famous building.

I’m interested in driving and would love to attend driving classes with you. If you wonder why I choose driving classes instead of second foreign language, below are my reasons. To begin with, after three years’ hard study in academic subjects, it’s high time that we try something different. Language learning is nothing different, given that we have already learned English for years. Driving is not necessarily easier than our studying at school, but it’s a good way to relieve us from the intense atmosphere. Next, if we are talented enough and make as much effort as we do with our academic study, we will able to get the driving license within one month, or even sooner. Thus we shall have almost 2 months left in the summer vacation, for other plans like traveling, speaking of which, here come the last point. How nice would it be if we can arrange a self-driving tour one or two weeks before the university enrollment. It will be an exciting and unforgettable experience for us. The approach of the College Examination stands for a sign that we are stepping into the society. We are about to leave the ivory tower and no longer just bury ourselves in books and exercise. Composition A As for Xiao Ming’s behavior, I think it is really silly for him to ask for a mobile pho ne like iPhone 5. It is even sillier to be upset for his parents’ turning down. As far as I’m concerned, students’ top priority should always be studying. He/she should always focus the attention on the study rather than thinking about playing or following the trend. 5What’s more, it is mentioned that Xiao Ming wanted to change his mobile phone simply because he thinks that his mobile phone is out-of-date, which, in my humble opinion, thinks his behavior nothing but ridiculous. Even if we are rich now, never can we forget to be economical in reality. Since it’s not broken or out of order, there is no need to change. (128 words) Composition B Dear Xiao Ming, I’ve heard that you are suffering from your parents’ not allowing you to buy the iPhone 5. A s your classmate, I felt a pity that you’re struggling to get your dream realized. But, at the same time, I really don’t think buying iPhone 5 is such a good option, especially for you. 5 You know, youngsters of your age are all using iPhone 5 now. It has already become the mainstream. Do you think using iPhone 5 is really innovative? Definitely not! As the new generation, we need to develop our own ideas instead of following others’ steps. What’s more, since your parents disapprove of your buying iPhone 5, why not trying other brands? In my opinion, other brands are far better than simply iPhone 5. 10 If you have more questions about choosing mobile phone, feel free to contact me via email. I’ll be more than willing to pull you out of your misery. Yours sincerely, Zhang Lin-lin (160 words) Composition C Dear Xiao Ming, It is said that your parents don’t allow you to buy the iPhone 5 in place of your old cell phone. And you are upset simply because it. As for me, I think that is quite understandable. Young kids like us are always trend-followers. Thus, we should definitely feel free to buy

Desertification Desertification is one of the world’s most alarming processes of environmental degradation(退化). The issue is often unclear, however, by a common misperception: that it’s a “natural” problem of advancing deserts in faraway developing countries. In fact, desertification is about land degradation: the loss of the land’s biological productivity, caused by man-made factors and climate change. Each year, desertification and drought cause an estimated $42 billion in lost agricultural production. The risks of desertification are sufficient and clear. It contributes to food insecurity, hunger and poverty, and can give rise to social, economic and political tensions that can cause conflicts, further poverty and land degradation. The great urgency of this challenge led the United Nations General Assembly to state 2006 to be the International Year of Deserts and Desertification (IYDD). It is a strong reminder of the urgent need to address the far-reaching implications of this problem. United Nations General Secretary recently summarizes in this way: “I look forward to working with Governments, civil society, the private section, international organizations and others to focus attention on this crucial issue, and to reverse the trend of desertification and set the world on a safer, more sustainable path of development.” The IYDD also presents a golden opportunity to get the message across strongly and effectively that desertification is a global problem which we ignore at our risk. It is important to recognize that dry-lands are home to some of the most magnificent ecosystems of this world. These unique natural habitats have been home to some of the world’s oldest civilizations. They stand like open-air museums, bearing witness to bygone eras.
