第二部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)

第一节根据短文内容,选出每篇文章后的问题的最佳答案。

A

Do dogs understand us

Be careful what you say around your dog. It might understand more than you think.

A border collie(牧羊犬) named Rico recognizes the names of about 200 objects, say researchers in Germany. The dog also appears to be able to

learn new words as easily as a 3-year-old child. Its word-learning skills

are as good as those of a parrot or chimpanzee(黑猩猩).

In one experiment, the researchers took all 200 items that Rico is

supposed to know and divided them into 20 groups of 10 objects. Then the

owner told the dog to go and fetch one of the items and bring it back. In

four tests, Rico got 37 out of 40 commands right. As the dog couldn't see

anyone to get clues, the scientists believe Rico must understand the

meanings of certain words.

In another experiment, the scientists took one toy that Rico had never

seen before and put it in a room with seven toys whose names the dog already

knew. The owner then told Rico to fetch the object, using a word the dog had

never heard before.

The correct object was chosen in seven out of l0 tests, suggesting that

the dog had worked out the answer by process of elimination(排除法). A month

later, Rico remembered half of the new names, which is even more impressive. Rico is thought to be smarter than the average dog. For one thing, Rico

is a border collie, a breed (品种)known for its mental abilities. In

addition, the 9-year-old dog has been trained to fetch toys by their names

since the age of nine months.

It's hard to know if all dogs understand at least some of the words we

say. Even if they do, they can't talk back. Still, it wouldn't hurt to

sweet-talk your dog every now and then. You might just get a big, wet kiss

in return!

21. From paragraph 2 we know that .

A. animals are as clever as human beings

B. dogs are smarter than parrots and chimpanzees

C. chimpanzees have very good word-learning skills

D. dogs have similar 'learning abilities as 3-year-old children

22. Both experiments show that .

A. Rico is smart enough to get all commands right

B. Rico can recognize different things including toys

C. Rico has developed the ability of learning mathematics

D. Rico won't forget the names of objects once recognizing them

23. Which of the following statements is true

A. The purpose of the experiments is to show the border collie's mental

abilities. B. Rico has a better memory partly because of its proper

early training.

C. The border collie is world-famous for recognizing objects.

D. Rico is born to understand its owner's commands.

24. What does the writer want to tell us

A. To train your dog.

B. To talk to your dog.

C. To be friendly to your dog.

D. To be careful with your dog.

B

Paynes Prairie

Have you ever heard of Paynes Prairie It is one of the most important natural and historical areas in Florida. Paynes Prairie is located near Gainesville. It is large, 21 000 acres. This protected land is called a preserve. The Florida Park Service manage the preserve.

The Paynes Prairie basin was formed when limestone dissolved and the ground settled. It is covered by marsh(沼泽)and wet prairie vegetation.

There are areas of open water. During brief periods it has flooded enough to be considered a lake. Except for that, the basin has changed little through time.

Man has lived on Paynes Prairie a very long time. He lived there as far back as 10000 B. C. At one time, the Seminoles lived there. The prairie is thought to have been named after King Payne, a Seminole chief. During the

late 1600s, the largest cattle ranch in Florida was on Paynes Prairie. Today, Paynes Prairie is preserved land . It is occupied by visitors and Florida Park Service employees.

Willam Bartram visited Paynes Praire. Bartram was the first person who portrayed (described)nature through personal experience as well as

scientific observation. He lived 200 years ago. He visited Paynes Prairie in 1774. At that time he described it. He called Paynes Prairie the "great Alachua Savannah."

Most of the animal life, which Bartram described, is still here. A large number of sandhill cranes(沙丘鹤), hawks and waterfowl(水禽) are here in winter. The animal diversity is increased by the presence of pine flatwoods, hammock, swamps and ponds.

The Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park is open year round. The Florida Park Service works hard so that the park will appear as it did in the past.

It offers many opportunities for recreation. At the park you can camp and picnic. You can hike and bike. You can boat and fish. You can ride on horse trails. And you can see lots of nature and wildlife. You can see Florida as

it was in the early days.

Paynes Prairie is a part of our Florida history. It is an example of our Florida natural resources. It is a place for recreation. Paynes Prairie is

Do you want to improve the way you study Do you feel nervous before a test Many students say that a lack of concentration (注意力) is their biggest problem. It seriously affects their ability to study, so do their test results.

If so, use these tips to help you.

Study Techniques

You should always study in the same place. You shouldn’t sit in a

position that you use for another purpose. For example, when you sit on a sofa to study, your brain will think it is time to relax. Don’t watch TV while you are studying. Experts warn that your concentration may be reduced by 50 percent if you attempt to study in this way. Always try to have a white wall in front of you, so there is nothing to distract (make less concentrated) you. Before sitting down to study, gather together all the equipment you need. Apart from your textbooks, pens, pencils and knives, make sure you have a dictionary. If your study desk or table is needed when you are not studying, store all your equipment in a box beside it.

Your eyes will become tired if you try to read a text which is on a flat surface. Position your book at an angle of 30 degrees.

Be realistic and don’t try to complete too much in one study period. Finish one thing before beginning another. If you need a break, get up and walk around for a few minutes, but try not to telephone a friend or have something to eat.

Test-taking Skills

All your hard work will be for nothing if you are too nervous to take your test. Getting plenty of rest is very important. This means do not study all night before your test! It is a better idea to have a long-term study plan. Try to make a timetable for your study which lasts for a few months.

Exercise is a great way to reduce pressure. Doing some form of exercise every day will also improve your concentration. Eat healthy food too.

When you arrive in the examination room, find your seat and sit down. Breathe slowly and deeply. Check the time on the clock during the test, but not too often. Above all, take no notice of everyone else and give the test paper your undivided attention.

29. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage

A. You should study in a different place every day, so you don’t get bored.

B. Your concentration will improve if you study and watch TV at the same time.

C. Check the time during the exam at a certain time.

D. Staying up all night and studying is tiring, but you will learn a lot using this method.

30. What does the underlined word “it” refer to

A. Your study desk or table.

B. Your textbook.

C. Your dictionary.

D. The equipment you need.

31. What can be inferred from the passage

A. You shouldn’t look at everyone else during the test.

B. You will have enough energy to deal with your study and exams by eating healthy diet.

C. You’ll concentrat e more if there is nothing to distract you.

D. If you feel tired during study, you can walk around for a few minutes.

D

NOT all memories are sweet. Some people spend all their lives trying to forget bad experiences. Violence and traffic accidents can leave people with terrible physical and emotional scars. Often they relive these experiences

in nightmares.

Now American researchers think they are close to developing a pill, which will help people forget bad memories. The pill is designed to be taken immediately after a frightening experience. They hope it might reduce ,or possibly erase(抹去),the effect of painful memories.

In November, experts tested a drug on people in the US and France. The drug stops the body releasing chemicals that fix memories in the brain. So far the research has suggested that only the emotional effects of memories may be reduced, not that the memories are erased.

The research has caused a great deal of argument. Some think it is a bad idea, While others support it.

Supporters say it could lead to pills that prevent or treat soldiers' troubling memories after war. They say that there are many people who suffer from terrible memories.

"Some memories can ruin people's lives . They come back to you when you don't want to have them in a daydream or nightmare. They usually come with very painful emotions," said Roger Pitman, a professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. "This could relieve a lot of that suffering."

But those who are against the research say that changing memories is very dangerous because memories give us our identity (特质). They also help us all avoid the mistakes of the past.

"All of us can think of bad events in our lives that were horrible at the time but make us who we are. I'm not sure we want to wipe those memories out, "said Rebecca Dresser, a medical ethicist.

32. The passage is mainly about .

A. a new medical invention

B. a new research on the pill

C. a way of erasing painful memories

D. an argument about the research on the pill

33. The drug tested on people can .

A. cause the brain to fix memories

B. stop people remembering bad experiences

C. prevent body producing certain chemicals

D. Wipe out the emotional effects of memories

34. We can infer from the passage that .

A. people doubt the effects of the pills

B. the pill will stop people's bad experiences

C. taking the pill will do harm to people's health

D. the pill has probably been produced in America

35. Which of the following does Rebecca Dresser agree with

A. Some memories can ruin people's lives.

B. People want to get rid of bad memories.

C. Experiencing bad events makes us different from others.

D. The pill will reduce people's sufferings from bad memories.

Why do some people have many friends while others do not 36 However, it is not so. Let’s look at two psychological experiments which will give you the key to happy interpersonal relations.

The first experiment is called the ―Hawthorne effect after Hawthorne, Illinois, where the experiment took place. A group of psychologists examined the work patterns of two groups of workers in the Western Electric Company.

37 .The psychologists changed the working conditions for one group twice

but left the other group alone. They were surprised to find that

productivity increase on both occasions and in both groups. They concluded that the increase in productivity came from the attention given to the workers by the management. It had increased their motivation (积极性) and so they had worked harder. In other words, if you take an interest in

others ,they will want to please you and you will have good relations with them.

38 After Martin Luther King, Jr was killed in the 1960s, a teacher, Jane Elliott, living in an all – white town decided to help her class of young children understand why the Civil Rights Movement had been necessary

in America.

She divided the class into two groups: one with blue eyes and the other with brown eyes. Other eye colours such as hazel or green were excluded from his exercise. Then she told the class that brown – eyed people were

cleverer than blue – eyed ones because of an agent (化学作用) for brown colour found in their blood. Blue – eyed people were stupid, lazy and not

to be trusted. Jane Elliott did not need to say any more. The brown – eyed students quickly got used to their new role as the leaders of the class. The blue – eyed students became quiet and withdrawn. Then she discovered

something very interesting. Four poor brown – eyed readers began to read fluently in a way they had never done before. 39 .So if you want to

be successful and happy, take an interest in others whether they are your classmates or workmates. Congratulate them on their successes and

sympathize(同情) with them in their troubles.

40 .

A. Before the experiment the management talked to both groups of workers and explained that they wanted to find the best working environment for them.

B. Remember that the way you treat others will decide their attitude and behaviour to you.

C. The second experiment shows what happens to personal relations if you

are rude to or ignore(忽略) others.

D. The ones who have more friends usually are those who care about others.

E. Jane Elliott had shown that the way people are treated affects not only their behaviour but also their confidence and their performance.

F. You may even imagine that this ability was something they were born

with because it seems so effortless to them.

G. The second experiment tells us what teachers said has a great effect on the students.

How Will AI Affect Our Life

Recently, Google’s AlphaGo defeated Lee Sedol and it has once again made AI(artificial intelligence)a hot topic. Actually, with the development of modern science, artificial intelligence is bringing about a huge change in our lives.

From the positive point of view, Some people welcome AI and expect it to benefit mankind in more fields. They think artificial intelligence can improve work efficiency and help us solve some problems of all kinds of science, which will promote the development of other science.

Others hold a negative point of view that AI may go beyond our control, causing disasters unexpected to human beings.

As far as I’m concerned, The understanding of AI should have two sides.

I do not object to the development of artificial intelligence, because this

高二英语期中考试题 一、阅读理解(共5大题;每小题2分,共40分) A On a Friday night, a poor young artist stood at the gate of the New York railway station, playing his violin. The music was so great that many people stopped to put some money into the hat of the young man. The next day, the young artist came to the same place, and put his hat on the ground gracefully. Different from the day before, he took out a large piece of paper and laid it under his hat. Then he began to play the violin. It sounded more pleasant than ever. Soon he was surrounded with people who were attracted by the words on that paper. It said, "Last night, a gentleman named George Sang put an important thing into my hat by mistake. Please come to claim(认领)it soon." After about half an hour, a middle-aged man rushed through the crowd to the violinist and said, "Yes, it's you. I knew that you were an honest man and would certainly come here." The young violinist asked calmly, "Are you Mr. George Sang?" The man nodded. The violinist asked, "Did you lose something?" "It's a lottery ticket (彩票)," said the man. The violinist took out a lottery ticket on which George Sang's name was seen. "Is it?" he asked. George nodded and took the lottery ticket and kissed it, then danced with the violinist. The violinist was a student at an arts college and had planned to attend advanced studies in Vienna. Later his classmate asked the violinist, "At that time you needed money to pay the tuition (学费)and you had to play the violin in the railway station every day to make money. Why didn't you keep the lottery ticket for yourself?" The violinist said, "Although I don't have much money, I live happily. But if I lose honesty I won't be happy forever." Through our lives, we can gain a lot and lose so much. But being honest should always be with us. 1.What did the young artist do at the railway station on Friday? A. He walked around the New York railway station. B. He waited for the train to Vienna. C. He came to buy a train ticket to Vienna. D.
