In Western society, especially in the English-speaking world, the chance for young people to see the other countries and experience life is considered important. Many young people, when they finish school at the age of 18, take a gap year before they go to university.

Parents often want their children to grow up a little and see what the real world

is like when they finish school. Although they are worried about their safety, many think that the advantages of independence and experience are worth the worries. Children are encouraged to be brave, independent and to explore the world on their own or with friends. Young people also want to experience freedom and see what life is like on the other side. This other side could be the other side of the world or just the other side of life. For example, if they have a rich life, they may want to see how people in poor areas live.

A gap year after school is also an important chance for young people to spend time thinking about what they want to do with their lives. A little bit of growing up and experience will help them make their important career decisions, especially when they are unsure about what they want to study.

Another reason for going straight after school is to get a break from studying before they start the next few years of university. So anywhere you travel in the world, you will meet young European people exploring the world.

So much of the world has been travelled and explored. The young people are now looking for more worthy experiences. Some of them work as volunteers to do something for the country they are visiting. Many gap year volunteers are now spending a few months teaching Engli sh in Thailand, helping feed giant pandas in China or building a well(井) in a village in Africa.

These young people’s wish to explore the world is an expression of the values of the societies that they are part of. Both discovering the world and making a positive difference in it are important parts of the Western mind.

( ) 4. Which is NOT a reason for young people to take a gap year?

A. Young people want to take a break fro m studying.

B. Young people want to be sure about what to study.

C. Parents encourage them to be brave and independent.

D. Parents encourage them to live a free and wealthy life.

( ) 5. Now a gap year volunteer might do something more valuable like .

A. experiencing different cultures

B. helping protect rainforests in Brazil

C. making friends with more people

D. enjoying traditional local food

( ) 6.By taking a gap year, young peopl e may .

A. stay with their parents all the time

B. make money for their further study

C. help change the world for the better

D. change the Western mind completely ( ) 7. The purpose of writing this article is to .

A. show different opinions about gap year

B. offer readers information about gap year

C. discover new ways to take a gap year

D. tell young people wh en to take a gap year

Today there are many fires than in the past. Over 100,000 wildfires burn each year in America. Russia has 20,000 to 35,000 wildfires every year. Australia has on average 60,000 each year. _____1_______

Many experts believe there are several reasons for this sudden increase in fires. The first reason is climate(气候)change. Recent weather has been warmer and drier. ____2_____ . When lightening strikes(发生雷电),dry grass easily catches fire. Hot winds add to the problem. The wind spreads a fire quickly. In 2020, Russia had the hottest and driest summer in a century. In just one month, 500 fires destroyed over 2,000 homes. Some people lost their lives.

____3____. In America, firefighters used to quickly put out every fire. They didn’t allow the grass and trees to burn. As a result, today many forests have thicker vegetation(植被).Thicker vegetation means more fuel(燃料)for fires. _____4____. Some trees are dead. The dead wood then easily catches fire. So surprisingly, America has many more fires today partly because of its past fire-fighting practices.

___5____As a result, countries like Australia allow more fires to burn naturally. Sometimes, fire fighters even start fires to get rid of(去除)dead wood. Of course, they carefully control the fires. The fire thins out old trees. This allows sunlight to reach the ground. As a result, fires help new trees to grow. Therefore, if a fire is not a serious threat (威胁)to people, firefighters may let it burn naturally.

A. Scientists now understand that a fire can be a natural part of a healthy

forest

At most modern zoos people can see, smell and hear animals in their natural way. Some zoos even have “friendship farms" where people can touch some of the animals. Here are four reasons why people need zoos. Firstly, zoos help people know more about animals and their natural environment. They give interesting information about each animal, such as where it comes from and how it lives. Special teachers at the zoo help children understand more about the animals. Trained guides show visitors around the zoo. Secondly, zoos are working hard to find out more about animals. New knowledge leads to improved ways of looking after animals in the zoo and better understanding of the same animals in the wild. Thirdly, zoos play a part in protecting animals and stopping them from disappearing. Zoos work together with each other to help the animals in danger. For example, gorillas (大猩猩) from Taronga Zoo were sent to live with gorillas at the Melbourne Zoo so that they would give birth to babies. Fin ally, zoos are important for people’s enjoyment. People enjoy getting close to animals without having to cross the plains of Africa or climb the mountains of China. In the past, animal shows were common in zoos. Visitors were excited when they saw monkeys in human clothes, and they even took rides on elephants or horses. However, today people enjoy seeing animals acting naturally. So a modern zoo is a place where animals can be well cared for. ( )1. How many reasons does the writer talk about? A. Two B. Three C. Four ( )2. Special teachers at the zoo _________. A. show visitors around the zoo B. look after animals in danger C. help children know about animals ( )3. From the passage we know ________ were sent from Taronga Zoo to the Melbourne Zoo.
