McDonald’s Supersi ze option, which includes a 7-ounce carton(盒) of fries and 42-ounce fountain soda, has been targeted by critics as contributing to a growing overweight crisis(危机) in the United States where more than half the population is considered overweight or obese.

The world’s largest fast-food company, which began offering Supersize French fries widely in 1994, says it is making the menu changes to support a balanced lifestyle approach that is keeping up with other recent moves to improve healthier behaviour.

When I was fifteen, I announced to my English class that I was going to write and illustrate my own books. Many students nearly fell out of their chairs laughing. “Don’t be silly, only geniuses can become writers,” and the English teacher said, “And you are getting a D this semester(学期).” I was so humiliated(羞辱) that I burst into tears.

That night I wrote a short sad poem about broken dreams and mailed it to the Capri’s Weekly newspaper. To my astonishment, they published it and sent me two dollars. I was a published and paid writer. I showed my teacher and fellow students. They laughed. “Just plain dumb luck,”the teacher said. I tasted success. I’d sold the first thing I’d ever written. That was more than any of them had done and if it was just dumb luck, which was fine with me.

During the next two years I sold dozens of poems, letters, jokes and recipes(决窍), By the time I graduated from high school, with a C minus average. I never mentioned my writing to my teachers, friends or my family again. I typed on my ancient typewriter. I wrote what I felt. Crying Wind, the title of my book, became

a best seller, was translated into fifteen languages and Braille(盲文) and sold worldwide.

People ask what college I attended, what degrees I had and what qualifications I have to be a writer. The answer is: “None.” I just write. I’m not gifted and I don’t write right. To all of you who dream of writing, I’m shouting at you: “Yes, you can. Don’t listen to them.”

The First Americans

There was a time long ago when a land bridge connected Asia and North America. The first settlers in North America crossed this land bridge from what is now Siberia to Alaska. The people who made this initial(最初的) crossing were probably following the animals they used for food.

Eventually, the oceans rose and the land bridge between the continents disappeared. The settlers, who I shall call the “First Americans”, could not return to their homeland. 71 For the next few thousand years, the First Americans migrated south and east throughout North and South America. They made the journey all the way from Alaska to the southern tip of South America, a distance of more than 10,000 miles. 72

In the far north, above the Arctic Circle, the First Americans became hunters of the ocean.

73 In the brief summer, they gathered berries and other plants. In the winter, they stayed in lodges(小屋) much of the time preparing for the next summer. It was a hard life, but they learned to survive in these harsh(严厉的) conditions.

Farther south, in what is now Arizona, Utah, Colorado, and New Mexico, the First Americans became cliff dwellers(悬崖居民). They began by living in caves that already existed in the cliffs.

74 The dwellings they constructed in many ways resembled(类似) today’s apartment buildings.

75 They built a system of dams and canals so they could store and use water almost any time of the year. They were so successful that they could raise fruits and vegetables that were not found naturally in the desert.

In Mexico and South America, the First Americans founded civilizations that were among the greatest in the world. They built huge pyramids, lived in fabulous(巨大的) cities, and made great advances in science and mathematics long before the Europeans arrived.

A. They also discovered foods like corn and potatoes.

B. Along the way, they established many different civilizations.

C. The First Americans of the Southwest learned to irrigate the desert.

D. They would have to survive in the New World they had discovered.

E. They built boats of animal skins and hunted or fished for their food.

F. People living near each other tended to share similar environments and customs.

G. They discovered how to add to the caves by building structures of wood and stone.

写作:Dear editor,

On World Reading Day, we went to the local library to serve as volunteers. I’d like to tell you something about the bad behaviors of some readers.

First, some readers don’t put the books where they were after reading. Also other people talk loudly or even make phone calls in the library, which greatly disturbs other readers. There are also people who eat and drink while reading, leaving rubbish on the table though there are dustbins nearby. What’s worse, notes are found in some books, making it hard for others to read. Some pages are gone, probably torn away by readers who find them useful.

I hope all the people coming to the library behave themselves while enjoying reading, creating

a better reading environment for all the book lovers.

Yours respectfully,

Li Hua
