第三部分:阅读理解(共20小题,每题2分,满分40分)

阅读下列短文,从短文后各题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项.

A

A person, like a commodity(商品), needs packaging. But going too far is absolutely undesirable.

A little exaggeration(夸张) will do no harm when it shows the person’s unique quali ties to their advantages. To show personal attractiveness in a casual and natural way, it is important for one to have a clear knowledge of oneself. A skilled packager knows how to add art to nature without any signs of

embellishment so that the person so packaged is not a commodity, but a human being, lively and lovely.

A young person, especially a female, shining with beauty and full of life, has all the favor granted. Youth however, comes and goes in a flash. Packaging for the middle-aged is primarily to hide the marks made by years. If you still enjoy life enough to keep self-confidence and work at pioneering work, you are unique in your natural qualities, and your attractiveness and grace will remain. Elderly people are beautiful if their river of life has been, through plains, mountains and jungles, running its course as it should. You have really lived your life, which now arrives at a self - satisfied stage of quietness and calmness with no interest in fame or wealth. There is no need to make use of hair dyeing.

The snow-capped mountain itself is a beautiful scene of fairyland. Let your looks change from young to old in step with the natural ageing process so as to keep in harmony with nature, for harmony itself is beauty, while the other way round will only end in unpleasantness. To be in the company of the elderly is like reading a thick book of good edition, which attracts one so much that one is unwilling to part with it. As long as one finds where one stands, one knows how to package oneself, just as a commodity sets up its brand by the right packaging.

A. people should be packaged at all ages

A. hardly exists

B. is the strongest

C. comes from the inside

What will power your house in the future?Nuclear, wind,or solar power?According to scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US,it might be leaves —but artificial (人造的) ones.

Natural leaves are able to change sunlight and water into energy. It is known as photosynthesis (光合作用).Now researchers have found a way to imitate this seemingly simple process.

The artificial leaf developed by Daniel Nocera and his colleagues at MIT can be seen as a special silicon chip with catalysts (催化剂).Similar to natural leaves,it can split water into hydrogen and oxygen when put into a bucket of water. The hydrogen and oxygen gases are then stored in a fuel cell, which uses those two materials to produce electricity, located either on top of a house or beside the house.

Though the leaf is only about the shape of a poker card, scientists claimed that it is promising to be an inexpensive source of electricity in developing countries. “One can imagine villages in India and Afric a not long from now purchasing an affordable basic power system based on this technology,” said Nocera at a conference of the American Chemical Society.

The artificial leaf is not a new idea. The first artificial leaf was invented in 1997 but was too expensive and unstable for practical use. The new leaf,by contrast,is made of cheap materials, easy to

use and highly stable. In laboratory studies,Nocera showed that an artificial leaf prototype (原型) could operate continuously for at least 45 hours without a drop in activity.

The wonderful improvements come from Nocera's recent discovery of several powerful, new and inexpensive catalysts. These catalysts make the energy transformation inside the leaf more efficient with water and sunlight. Right now,the new leaf is about 10 times more efficient at carrying out photosynthesis than a natural one. Besides, the device can run in whatever water is available;that is,it doesn't need pure water. This is important for some countries that don't have access to pure water.

Wit h the goal to “make each home its own power station” and “give energy to the poor”,scientists believe that the new technology could be widely used in developing countries, especially in India and rural China.

64.Which of the following orders correctly shows how the artificial leaf is used to produce electricity?

a.artificial leaves split water into hydrogen and oxygen

b.the hydrogen and oxygen gases are stored in a fuel cell

c.the artificial leaves are put in water

d.the fuel cell uses hydrogen and oxygen to produce electricity

A. c,a,b,d B.c,b,a,d C.b,c,a,d D.c,a,d,b

65.The purpose of the scientists at MIT in developing the new artificial leaf is to________.

A.build up more power stations in the world

B.provide cheaper energy for developing countries

C.offer people in developing countries access to pure water

D.gain a deeper understanding of the photosynthesis process

66.The main idea of this passage is ________.

A.an introduction to the history of artificial leaves B.a mixture of water power and solar energy C.giving energy to the poor D.an invention copying photosynthesis

D

For the rest of the week, Joe practiced kicking football hard, concentrating on his each kicking. Sometimes Joe hit the ball straight. Sometimes it went wide again. But it seemed that the more he believed he could do it, the easier it was.

“I’m not a joke now,” thought Joe. “Not a joke at all!” But a practice wasn’t like a real match and his boots were still not giving him enough power.

He should have told his mum and dad about it straight away but, of course, he didn’t. He was always shy to ask for things.

Finally, late on the night before the match, he could hold himself back no longer.

“Dad, I haven’t got any proper football boots …” he said.

“Ah,” said Dad, “I might be able to help you there.”

At the words, Joe was excited. New boots! He thought. “He’s got me some new boots! He must have got me them for Christmas,” thought Joe, “But now that I’m in an important match, he’s giving them to me early. Wonderful!”

Dad went upstairs. Joe excitedly tried to watch the football preview on TV. He wasn’t playing for Manchester United or Liverpool, of course, but he was part of it all now; part of the thrill. His legs twitched with every kick on the screen. His head shook with every centre. And all the time, his mind was racing ahead to his own great game the next morning, in his super new boots.

It was ages before his dad came downstairs again. He put a large pair of shiny black boots in front of Joe.

As he stared at them, the boy felt as if someone had poured ice into his brain. The boots were awful!

“Good, eh?” said his dad.

Joe found it hard to speak. He had never seen anything like them before.

They weren’t low-cut, soft or…. Th ey had big, hard square toes, great big long studs(鞋钉)and they were high at the ankle. They were his dad’s old rugby boots, polished up.

Joe was filled with disappointment. They had been good boots, quality boots. And they were his size. Joe’s feet were e normous for his age. But he could imagine what everyone at school would say.

“ …,” he finally gasped, “ should be exactly my size.”

“At least I won’t slip,” he thought, “the studs are like sharks’ teeth!” Then he couldn’t help thinking about those in Ashto n’s windows, which he had been longing to get.

That night, he went to bed early but he didn’t sleep much because he was so terrified of being late. He woke at 1.17, 2.49, 3.37, 3.43, 4.55. The numbers jumped off the big face of his digital clock. Then 10.40!

Ahhh!!!

He jumped out of bed. He seized the clock. 6.03! 10.40 had been only a dream. At eight, breakfast time, it was raining like mad.

“Might get called off, Joe,” suggested his mum.

“Never, Mother. …will not be like cricket,” said his dad. “Will take a lot to stop football.”

Joe checked everything for the tenth time. He put his boots at the very bottom of his large bag, well out of sight. He had decided to put them on when nearly everyone had left the changing room. Then his classmates wouldn’t make fun of him. Soon, it was time to set out.

“Good luck!” said his mum, giving him a kiss.

His dad had his coat on, ready for his morning deliveries. “Want a lift to school?” he said. “I hope to get down to watch you when I’ve done the trip to Eccles.”

“Okay,” said Joe.

As Dad’s van carried him down the hill to school, Joe was thinking about the boots. If only … but no, he had to stop that kind of thinking. It doesn’t matter about the boots, he told himself.

In 1920, The Age of Innocence was published twice; first in four parts, July-October, in the Pictorial Review magazine, and then by D.Appleton &Company as a book in New York and in London.

It indirectly inspired many more works of fiction in many media. This 32,000-word story is generally credited with the popularization of the concept of time travel using a vehicle that allows an operator to travel purposefully and selectively. The term “time machine”, coined by Wells, is now universally used to refer to such a vehicle. Wells also introduced the idea of time being the “fourth dimension”, as well as an early example of the Dying Earth subgenre.

The Great Gatsby has become a standard text in high school and university courses on American literature in countries around the world and is ranked second in the Modern Library’s list of the 100 Best Novels of the 20th Century.

The book gives readers a glimpse of the exploration of Africa, which was still not completely known to Europeans of the time, with explorers travelling all over the continent in search of its secrets.

Public interest in fanciful tales of African exploration was at its height, and book was an instant hit; it made Verne financially independent and got him a contract with Jules Hetzel’s pub lishing house, which put out several dozen more works of his for over forty years afterward.

How to Choose Your Courses and Universities?

Every year, before the College Entrance Examination, senior school graduates have to face the problem of choosing their courses and universities. Our school had a survey on it recently.

Senior middle school graduating students of our school have different opinions on how to choose their courses and universities. The survey shows that 45% of the students think they should choose their courses and universities according to their interests, for interest is the mother of success, and it will be a miserable thing for students to have to spend most of their time studying what they have no interest in.

Most of the students(around 55%), however, insist that main consideration should be given to the needs of our society, for, they argue, not everyone can find the job they like best. Besides, interest is not something unchangeable. And they believe their interests can be developed and changed.

I think it is truly difficult for us students to make a choice on how to our courses and universities. But I believe the best way is to refers to the parents and teacher's opinion. At the same time We’d better consider our social development needs.

M: A nd today on our holiday programme we have some information about a cycling holiday. It is run by Pathway Holidays, and it’s from Monday 12th June until Saturday 17th June. On this trip, you cycle from Whitehaven in the northwest of England to Sunderland in the northeast. The total cost of the tour is £652 and that includes your hotel, all meals, the transport of your luggage and a tour guide. This is someone who knows the area and can tell you about it during the trip. In fact, the price includes everything except bicycle hire. It’s possible to hire a bicycle and you should book one in advance if you want to do that, but they recommend bringing your own bicycle. It’s often more comfortable to ride one that you are used to.

Entertainment is provided in the first hotel in Whitehaven —there’ll be a musical evening on the first day. On Wednesday evening, the hotel you are staying in will organize a quiz, and on the last evening —that’s Friday —there’ll be a party.

If you’d like more information about the trip, the company Pathway Holidays advises you to look at their website, and I’ll tell you what that is in a minute. We’re just going to talk to someone who did this cycling holiday recently …

A For the business traveler who’s all about efficiency: check out these hotels that will get you in and out with a minimum trouble. When you’re pressed for time on a business trip, nothing can infuriate you more than a slow hotel check-in process. On your next trip, try these hotels that offer a speedier check-in process. ◆ Marriott Detroit Airport Another option for business travelers in a hurry: Marriott is rolling out its mobile check-in app to 325 hotels this year, including the Marriott Detroit Airport hotel. (I’ve tested the app itself but not for a real visit quite yet.) here is the basic idea: you download the iPhone or Android app. The night before, you can “check-in” virtually. When you arrive, you get an alert that the room is ready and your key, which is already tied to your reservation, is waiting for you at the desk. ◆Hyatt Regency Minneapolis I happened to stay at this hotel recently and liked how fast the kiosk check-in works. The kiosk asks you to insert your credit card, similar to an airport terminal. The whole process took about 3 minutes. When I left, I was equally impressed with the fast check-out: An agent meets you in the lobby with, an iPad and asks for an email to use for a receipt. The big advantage: you never have to wait in line. ◆Radisson LaCrosse The Radisson is trying to make the kiosk process even faster. At a few select hotels like the Radisson Lacrosse in Wisconsin, you use a mobile app to register and then receive a barcode by email or text. When you get to the kiosk, you can scan the bar code to get your key without any other steps required. It’s super fast. You can find this new check-in system at the Radisson hotels in Salt Lake City, Seattle, and Phoenix as well. 1.What does the word ‘infuriate’, in Paragraph 2 most probably mean? A.annoy B.remind C.amuse D.impress 2.Which two hotels offer a mobile app for customers to check in? A.Marriott Detroit Airport and Yotel New York. B.Marriott Detroit Airport and Radisson LaCrosse. C.Marriott Detroit Airport and Hyatt Regency Minneapolis. D.Hyatt Regency Minneapolis and Radisson LaCrosse.
