London’s Chinese community dates back to the 18th century, when a small number of Chinese sailors moved to the city to work in Limehouse, eastern London. As time went on, other Chinese people came to this area and Limehouse began to be know as “Chinatown”. However, London’s Chinese community remained very small for many years: at the start of the 20th century, there were just 545 Chinese people in Britain.

After World War II, many farmers in Hong Kong lost their jobs and came to London. As Limehouse Limehouse had been almost destroyed during the war, they settled in a different area—a part of central London near Leicester Square. This area is now what Londoners call Chinatown.

At first, the new immigrants(移民) found it difficult to get jobs. In the 1950s, however, a small Chinese restaurant opened in London. Many British people visited it and said that Chinese food was wonderful! Suddenly, Chinese restaurants and take-aways started opening in every part of the city. Instead of too little work, the new Chinese immigrants now found that they had too much! They worked as cooks, managers or waiters. Most of them enjoyed their lives and arranged their friends and relatives to join them from overseas.

As time went by, London’s Chinese community became more and more successful. The sons and daughters of the original restaurant workers studied and worked very hard. And most went on to get highly paid jobs. Many Chinese families left Chinatown and moved to more expensive outskirts(市郊). Chinatown, however, is still as lively as ever.

Weddings in Indonesia are very important events. They often include the wedding reception(宴会) and the wedding ceremony(仪式). Guests are usually only invited to the wedding reception, while the wedding ceremony is usually for family members and close friends.

A wedding reception may be held during the daytime or in the evening and usually lasts for two or three hours. What you should wear to a wedding depends on the time of that day and where the reception is held. For men, a good quality long-sleeved shirt is appropriate, but a suit would be more correct for an evening wedding held in a 5-star hotel. For ladies, a smart suit is fine for daytime but you should wear makeup(化妆) in the evening.

Instead of gifts, most people give money, which should be in a small envelope. When you arrive at the reception hall, you write your name on a guest book and put your envelope into the box on the table.

After the wedding ceremony, you are free to talk with other guests and enjoy the food and drinks provided. A good meal is served, offering far more choices than anyone could possibly think. Alcohol(酒) is almost never served. It is not necessary to stay until the end of a wedding. When you have finished eating, you are free to leave. Attending a wedding can certainly be a wonderful experience and you can learn something about Indonesian culture.

Look at the picture. It shows us a mountain and

side of the mountain.

In January, February and March, warm wet

In July and August, strong winds blow from G towards the mountain. They pass over a wide dessert, where it is always very hot. The winds become hot and dry. They rise when they meet the mountain. They do not form clouds because there is no moisture in the hot air.
