“Everybody loves a bargain.” One person's useless, ugly, or broken object can be another person's bargain. That is why so many Americans do not throw things away. They put them outside

their houses. They put on a “For Sale” sign. And, as simple as that, they have a yard sale.

The sellers put a paid announcement(付费通告)in a local newspaper. It tells when and where the yard sale will take place. These sales are very popular during weekends in spring, summer, and autumn. Early in the morning, all the things to be sold are carried out of the house. Then they sit all day in the sunlight----like tired guests at a party----waiting for someone to take them home.

Just about anything can be sold at a yard sale. Sometimes, there are more clothes than anything else. Cooking equipment is also popular. So are old toys, tools, books, tables and chairs. Then there are objects called “white elephants”. A white elephant is something you think is extremely ugly or useless. It may be an electric light shaped like a fish. You feel a sharp pain whenever you look at it. To someone else, however, it might be a thing of beauty and joy.

Some people go to yard sales to find a special thing that they collect. It may be old toy trains, for example, or painting of dogs. Experts say more Americans are collecting old things now than ever before. Most people who go to yard sales, however, are not looking for anything special. They might buy an object simply because it costs so little. They enjoy negotiating(谈判) over prices, even if they really do not need the object. Later, they may hold their own yard to sell all the things they have bought.

56. What kind of things will go to a yard sale?

A. Cheap and ugly things.

B. Things people no longer use.

C. Things out of season.

D. Things of great value.

57. A white elephant refers to _________.

A. something that can cause a feeling of pain

B. something disliked by the owners while appreciated by others

C. something sold at the lowest prices

D. a toy shaped like a fish

58. We can infer from the last paragraph that__________.

A. people may find something of great value on a yard sale

B. yard sales only attract those who have a low income

C. things on a yard sale can cost people a lot

D. most people don’t want to go to yard sales.

B

Advertising uses repetition to increase consumers’ preference for brands. Particularly for novel

brands, much exposure and repetition is necessary to establish the brand name in the first place. Do you still remember your feeling when you see or hear the names YAHOO or GOOGLE for the first time? Now they are imprinted in your brain. Basic psychological research has already shown that repeatedly perceived (感知) information is easier to be remembered for the brain process.

Recent research has shown that repetition effects actually are originally caused from the mouth.

Each time we come across a person’s or product name, the lips and the tongue automatically simulate(模仿) the pronunciation of that name. This happens without our awareness and without actual mouth movements. During inner speech, the brain attempts to say the novel name. When names are presented repeatedly, this simulation happens repeatedly. However, if this inner speech is disturbed, for instance during chewing gum or whispering another word, the repetition effect vanishes.

An interesting experiment was conducted in movie theaters. 96 participants were invited to a

real movie theater and were presented a block of commercials and a movie later on. Half of the

participants received popcorn to eat. For them, the mouth was occupied with chewing the popcorn so the mouth muscles could not engage in inner speech when watching the ads for the novel brands. The other half of the participants only received a small sugar cube, which dissolved quickly in their mouth so that the mouth muscles were free to simulate the pronunciation of the brand names. The participants were invited to the lab one week after the cinema session. They were presented with images of products. Half of these products had been advertised in the cinema session; the other half were completely novel products. Participants were asked to indicate the products that they liked, and their physiological (生理的) responses were measured. Those participants who had only received a sugar cube proved that there was a clear advertising effect. They preferred advertised novel products and also showed positive physiological responses of familiarity for advertised products. However, those participants who had eaten popcorn while watching the commercials one week before showed no such advertising effect.

59. Why does the author mention Yahoo and Google in Paragraph One?

A. To remind readers of brand names.

B. To prove the influence of repetition.

C. To compare the effects of two brands.

D. To draw readers’ attention to the research.

60. What does the underlined word “vanish” probably mean?

A. Disappear.

B. Improve.

C. Reduce.

D. Occur.

61. One week after the cinema session, the participants who ate sugar cube ________.

A. held positive attitude toward movies

B. showed preference for advertisements

C. tended to choose the advertised products

D. felt familiar with the commercials and the movies

62. Where is the passage likely to have been taken from?

A. A psychological report.

B. An entertainment website.

C. A commercial advertisement.

D. A popular science magazine.

Exercise may help to safeguard the mind against depression through previously unknown effects on working muscles, according to a new study involving mice.

Mental health experts have long been aware that even mild, repeated stress can contribute to the development of depression and other mood disorders in animals and people. Scientists have also known that exercise seems to cushion against depression. But precisely how exercise, a physical activity can lessen someone’s risk for depression, a mood state, has been mysterious. So for the new study, researchers at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm studied the brains and behavior of mice in a complicated and novel fashion.

We can’t ask mice if they are feeling cheerful or in low spirits. Instead, researchers have pictured certain behaviors that indicate depression in mice. If animals lose weight, stop seeking out a sugar solution when it’s available — because, probably, they no longer experience normal pleasures — or give up trying to escape from the cold-water zone just freeze in place, they are categorized as depressed. And in the new experiment, after five weeks of frequent but low-level stress, such as

being lightly shocked, mice displayed exactly those behaviors. They became depressed.

The scientists could then have tested whether exercise blunts (延缓) the risk of developing depression after stress by having mice run first. But, frankly, from earlier research, they wanted to know how, so they bred pre-exercised mice. A wealth of earlier research by these scientists and others had shown that aerobic exercise, in both mice and people, increases the production within muscles of an enzyme (酶) called PGC-1alpha. The Karolinska scientists suspected that this enzyme somehow creates conditions within the body that protect the brain against depression. Then, the scientists exposed the animals, which without exercising, were in high levels of PGC-1alpha to five weeks of mild stress. The mice responded with slight symptoms of worry. But they did not develop depression. They continued to seek out sugar and fought to get out of the cold-water zone. Their high levels of PGC-1alpha appeared to make them depression-resistant. Finally, to ensure that these findings are relevant to people, the researchers had a group of adult volunteers complete three weeks of frequent endurance training, consisting of 40 to 50 minutes of moderate cycling or jogging. The scientists conducted muscle biopsies (活体检查) before and after the program and found that by the end of the three weeks, the volunteers’ muscle cells contained substantially more PGC-1alpha than at the study’s start. The finding of these results, in the simplest terms, is that “you reduce the risk of getting depression when you exercise,” said Maria Lindskog, a researcher at the Karolinska Institute.

63. The researchers at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm conducted the new study hoping to know______.

A. if exercise cushions against depression

B. what can lead to depression in animals and people

C. if stress can contribute to the development of depression

D. how exercise contributes to reducing someone’s risk for depression

64. We can infer from the new experiment conducted by researchers at the Karolinska Institute that mice are depressed except when ______.

A. they stand still in place

B. they stop searching for the sugar water

C. they attempt to escape from the cold-water zone

D. they can’t experienc e normal pleasures any longer

65. Researchers asked a group of adult volunteers to complete three weeks of frequent endurance training in order to ______.

A. know if exercise can help to safeguard the mind against depression

B. know if they can endure 40 to 50 minutes of moderate cycling or jogging

C. confirm the findings above are also relevant to people

D. ensure they can lose weight after moderate cycling or jogging

66. It can be concluded from the passage that______.

A. the enzyme called PGC-1alpha helps to ease depression

B. athletes are more likely to develop depression than ordinary people

C. the mice with high levels of PGC-1alpha are easier to develop depression

D. in the past mental health specialists didn’t know exercise could help reduce depression

Our bedroom has no full-length mirror. There is one at the canteen entrance. I always cherish a secret desire to take a glance before it at myself in a beautiful new dress. However, each time when it comes to the fulfillment, I get seized with such an uneasiness that I literally stagger(踉跄) away—backing out at the critical moment.

At the root of it is my lack of confidence by which I have been enslaved since childhood. It embarrasses me at the mildest praise, crushes my utmost efforts to say “No”, and prevents me from asking my parents for one cent more than necessary. Among other things, lack of confidence has wormed its way into my love of piano.

At the age of 14, one Sunday morning, I was woken up by a resounding hymn(洪亮的圣歌). Tracing that call of God into a neighboring church, I found myself deeply attracted by the melody of a piano—something beyond the means of my parents. To make it worse, people say a pianist is supposed to have music in the blood, but I believe I had none from my engineer father and technician mother. For days on end, I kept thinking of nothing else. I had a dream.

It wasn’t a dream after gold, which made some of my close friends to engage in business as self-employed traders or street peddlers. I was sometimes dazzled by their gold rings or elegant necklaces behind which, however, I seemed to catch sight of skeletons in their cupboards and was frightened away from the craze for fortunate. Out of despair, I kept it to myself, lack of confidence weighing heavy on me. I could do nothing but turn to my dream for comfort, for courage to aim high and wish for the impossible. I was convinced that before I could afford anything expensive (to me, it was a piano), I should climb up the academic ladder as high as possible.

For the next nine years, I carefully held back my desire for music to keep my search for learning, especially in English studies. My efforts were so rewarding that I went successfully through high school and college in my hometown. When I received the admission notice for a second degree course at a famous university in Beijing, the national capital, tears welled up in my eyes. I knew my command of English was my wealth, for I might make a deal with a pianist who would give me access to his piano in exchange for English lessons. And that has come true!

To this day, whenever I lay my fingers on the snow-white keyboard, ready for a melody, I still feel shy. I am quite aware of my limited music talent, but as a shy dreamer, I have found my way to success.

67. According to the first two paragraphs, we can learn that the writer is __________.

A. helpless

B. shy

C. honest

D. considerate

68. Why did the writer say her desire for the piano was a dream in the third paragraph?

a. Her parents couldn’t afford a piano.

b. H er parents didn’t want her to engage in musi

c.

c. She thought she had no gift for music.

d. She could do nothing but accept the reality.

A. a, b

B. c, d

C. a, c

D. b, d

69. How did the writer make her dream of playing the piano come true?

A. She turned to her friends for financial aid.

B. She taught English in exchange for piano lessons.

C. She was admitted to a university for a second degree course in music.

D. She earned money by doing a part-time job to pay for her piano lessons.

70. What can we learn from the writer’s example?

A. Wealth always comes after a great effort.

B. Confidence is a key factor in success.

C. We should be academically successful before other achievements.

D. We should make every effort to turn a dream into reality.

It's no surprise that sports can greatly benefit a child physically, psychologically, and socially. A 2008 Women's Sports Foundation Rese arch Report concluded that children’s athletic participation is also associated with increased levels of family satisfaction, great achievement in study, and an overall better quality of life for children. And a study published in last month’s American Jou rnal of Preventive Medicine showed that kids who are active at age 5 wind up with less body fat at ages 8 and 11.

But one hotly debated discussion focuses on the kinds of sports kids should play, with parents mistakenly thinking, "Lizzie is so quiet, we should let her join in basketball and soccer to try to get her to open up." But increasingly, experts are suggesting the healthier instinct (直觉) might be, "Lizzie is so quiet. Maybe we should see if she likes playing with a big team like softball or if she likes ballet or swimming, where she can work more on her own terms."

“Participation in any sport is going to provide kids with life skills----the ability to focus and to concentrate, the ability to handle pressure in tough situations, the ability to stay calm when things aren't going just right,’’ explains Orlando-based youth sports psychology expert Patrick Cohn. Those lessons will carry over into future, non-sports attempts.

Team sports certainly offer benefits not as easily obtained via individual activities, as players leant how to communicate and work with others, and there’s the potential to develop leadership abilities. Team sports also help kids develop their social identity. Our sense of worth is developed through what we achieve and a sense of belonging.

Individual sports offer unique advantages, too, like developing a child’s sense of independence. “Hero, you don’t depend upon teammates," says Cohn. "You take full responsibility, whether you do well or perform poorly." Many of Cohn’s young clients complain about pressure from team mates or coaches to make zero mistakes or carry more of the team than they may want to; these kids may enjoy a solo sport like tennis or gymnastics.

Individual activities keep kids away from comparing themselves to the best players on the team, a habit that does little to help confidence levels. Instead, it encourages them to compare their skills to their own past performances. With individual sports like swimming or track, it’s easier for the child to participate on his own, at his leisure(闲暇), without having to round up a bunch of like-minded peers.

Above all, while some children enjoy the excitement of competition, others are more likely to benefit from the freedom of individual sports, and finding the right balance can be necessary for

children’s enjoyment. What parents think is encouragement, children often consider as pressure. So

The Elephant and the Fly

An elephant was standing and picking leaves from a tree. A small fly came, flying and buzzing near his ear. The elephant waved it away with his long ears. Then the fly came again, and the elephant waved it away once more.

This was repeated several times. Then the elephant asked the fly, “Why are you so restless and noisy? Why can’t you stay for a while in one place? ”

The fly answered, “I am attracted to whatever I see, hear or smell. M y senses pull me constantly in all directions and I cannot resist them. What is your secret? How can you stay so calm and still?”

The elephant said, “My senses do not rule my attention. Whatever I do, I get involved in it. Now that I am eating, I am completely absorbed in eating. In this way I can enjoy my food and chew it better. I rule and control my attention. When you are in charge of your senses and attention, your

An elephant was constantly disturbed by a restless fly, who wondered about the secret of remaining calm. The elephant revealed that calmness would be obtained when one’s senses and attention were focused.

(32词)

Inspired by what the elephant said, I realized the ability to focus one’s attention is the key to success. Any person, if easily distracted, is unable to achieve his success.

This reminds me of what happened in my primary school. I once signed up for too many various after-class activities. As a result, I didn’t spend enough time on my studies. Consequently, I fell behind and failed in exams.

Since then I know that one should focus on one thing before it is well done. As a Senior Two student, having set a clear goal, I wil l give priority to it, trying to resist any temptation. I’m fully aware that only with a determined mind can I achieve my goal.

M: Honey, I’m planning to visit Steve and his wife this weekend. They just finished his research and came back from China last week. Would you like to come with me?

W: Oh, really? We haven’t seen them for nearly one year. Let me check my schedule first. That’s OK with me. I’ll accompany you.

M: Fantastic!

W: Are there any other guests there? Is it casual or formal? What should I wear?

M: Just some cl ose friends. It’s just a casual get-together. Formal dress is not necessary.

W: Do you think we should bring some gifts to them?

M: This is just what I’m thinking. Steve loves whisky very much, so I want to buy a bottle of Scottish whisky for him. What do you think?

W: That’s a good idea. And that’s for Steve’s wife, Amanda. I remember she loves roses. Therefore, I can bring a bunch of roses for her. But how about the kids?

M: I don’t want to take them to Steve’s home. They’re too naughty. And Steve doesn’t like to make too much noise.

W: Don’t worry, I’ll ask a favor of our neighbor to look after our kids for us. One more thing, darling, do we stay for dinner?

M: No, I’m afraid we don’t have enough time. I have a lot of work to do.

Text 9

W: Sir, you’ve b een using the Online Catalogue for quite a while. Is there anything I can help you find?

M: I’ve got to write a paper about Hollywood in the 30s and 40s, and I’m really struggling. There

are hundreds of books, and I just don’t know where to begin.

W: Your topic sounds pretty big. Why don’t you narrow it down to something like … Uh … the history of the studios during that time?

M: You know, I was thinking about doing that, but more than 30 books came up when I typed in “movie studios”.

W: You could cut that down even further by listing the specific years you want. Try adding “1930s”

or “1940s” or maybe “Golden Age”.

M: “Golden Age” is a good idea. Let me type that in…Hey, look, just 6 books came up that time.

That’s a lot better.

W: Oh… another thing you might consider… have you tried looking for any magazine or newspaper articles?

M: No, I’ve only been searching for books.

W: Well, you can look up magazine articles in the “Reader’s Guide to Periodical Literature”. And we do subscribe to “The Los Angeles Times”. You might go through their index to see if there’s anything you want.

M: Okay. I think I’ll get started with these books and then I’ll go over the magazines.

W: If you need any help, I’ll be over at the Reference Desk.

M: Great, thank you.

Text 10

Nelson decided to take his kids to the park last Saturday. After they got there, everything was fine until they were driving through the area where the elephants were, and they stopped for a moment to take some photos. His little boy opened the window to give an elephant a sandwich. This huge elephant came to them and suddenly put his nose through the window.

And when Nelson tried to close the window, it got worse because the elephant’s nose got trapped. The elephant was so frightened that it started hitting the car. Luckily one guard saw what was going on and rescued them. They were pretty shocked, and two of the windows of their car were broken.

The guards gave the kids some juice and their mum and dad a glass of beer to calm them down. Then they set off home, but when they were about halfway back, they saw an accident had happened on the freeway. There were two police cars, and of course Nelson stopped, as he’s a doctor, to see if he could help.

But when the policemen saw Nelson’s car, they were a bit surpr ised and asked him what happened to it, so he told them all about the elephant. They were just confused about the elephant and thought he must have been drunk. So they asked him to take a breath test. And of course because of that huge glass of beer at the park, now he’s going to face a punishment.
