The cancer has weakened the mother to the point where she can no longer walk. The doctors feared she might become too weak to fight the illness, so they suggested giving her a shot which would energize her spirit for a while.

Today was the day when the family might briefly have their mother back. Since she was ill, there has been a void(空虚感) which no one else could fill. She was a stay-at-home mom in her whole life. Being an only child, she wanted to have a dozen children, but her health only allowed for six to be born. She was always there keeping the house clean and cooking for the family. The mother was satisfied with her life, though she was the type of person who probably could have been succcssful no matter what she chose to do.

After the shot, the mother opened her eyes, and gestured that she was getting up. Gaining her strength, she began walking to the kitchen.

Everyone stared in disbelief as she placed a pot on the stove. The eldest son asked his mother what she was doing. In a loud voice she said, "I am cooking supper." "You should do something special with your time instead of wasting it on us," said a child. "You could go and take the boat out on the lake," another child said loudly.

The mother patiently listened to the many possibilities, and then said, "No ... I don't want to do any of those things. My true joy in life has always been serving my family."

After the supper, she fell asleep forever with a smile on her face.

Nutrition influcnces not only students' grades at school but their growth and development. Improper nutrition is one of the causes of childhood obesity. What can you do to help your child

avoid childhood obesity?

My first piece of advice is to look in your fridge. What are you buying at the grocery store? Think about it: if you don't buy junk food or snacks, your kids won't eat them at home. Now if you're like me —both of your kids are at school, you'II know you can't police them every second of the day. This is the time when you'II need to talk to your children about their food choices. If you don't know the right food choices, there are so many free resources on-line to guide you.

Try new things. I was very surprised to find out my 4-year-old daughter likes balsamic vinegar —she calls it the "black saucc". She likes to have it with tomatoes and cucumbers. You just nevcr know what your kids might like.

Don't get stressed if you can't always prepare something healthy. You may sometimes leave the house and forget to take something out for dinner, or you are running late and there's no time to cook before you have to take one of the kids somewhere. However, you can still make healthy choices while dining out. Many of the fast food restaurants offer fruit and milk instead of soda. I like to buy organic frozen pizzas fiom the organic market —for a quick dinner solution(解决办法). All the ingredients are natural. What I do is to serve the pizra with something raw: letruce, cucumbers, tomatoes, or fruit to try to give the kids something healthy with that meal.

In closing, take baby steps. Don't try to change your family's eating habits in one go, or you'll go nuts.

Hurricane Irene hit the coast of North Carolina with winds of up to one hundred and twenty kilometers an hour last Saturday. The storm weakened as it moved north. But Irene brought heavy rains and strong winds to the populated (人口稠密的) east coast.

Hundreds of thousands of people were told to leave areas likely to suffer flood. That included parts of New York City where Mayor Michael Bloomberg ordered over two hundred and fifty thousand people to evacuate.

Irene is blamed for more than forty deaths in the United States. Five deaths were reporwd in the Caribbean. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo estimated his state suffered one billion dollars in damage. Estimates place the total damage from the storm at about seven billion dollars. Insurance (保险业) companies are expected to pay forty to fifty percent of these costs. But costs of lost trade in the travel industry, especially in North Carolina, will be high at a time when the nation's economy is struggling.

High winds and flood from Irene brought down electrical lines, causing about four million people to lose power. Days after the storm, hundreds of thousands were still without electricity.

Many states in the path of Irene have reported disasters. Governors in several states asked over four thousand National Guard members to help in rescue. In North Carolina, some communities near the ocean were flooded and cut off from the mainland. And the small northeastern state of Vermont was especially hard hit. Emergency workers have had to airlift food and supplies to thousands of people trapped by flood waters. Officials said it was the worst flood in Vermont in almost one hundred years.

A man described what he saw in the community of Woodstock in Vermont. He said, "The water in the yard was almost up to the house, which is another ten feet above this level. It is probably fifteen or twenty feet above the normal river level. So the water was really really very high. And the force of it was beyond our understanding."

阅读下面的短文,然后按照要求写一篇150词左右的英语短文。

Usage of school uniforms in the United States is slowly finding its way into public schools. School uniforms were used in ancient times. Let's read the fascinating history behind it.

According to a historian, uniforms have an interesting past attached to them. Uniforms were introduced in the United States around 1979 to deal with the problems of violence among students who fought over designer clothes. The uniform policy was carried out by President Cliton who wanted to stop gang war problems. Statistical reports state that only 25% of primary schools and around 10% of secondary schools in the United States have strictly obeyed the uniform rule.

In recent years, many parents and educators think that wearing uniforms can impact on the thought process of a student. They think that young people often express their feelings through the clothing that they wear. Uniforms will take away this form of expression. Why should school districts try to make everyone look the same? Also, students would need to buy additional clothing to wear after school and on the weekends. They also think that uniforms can cost more money than some some families might be able to afford.
