The Merchant of V enice:Bassanio巴萨尼奥Antonio安东尼奥,Shylock夏洛克,Bassanio’s girlfriend, Portia

Theme: praise the friendship between Antonio and Bassanio, to idealize Portia as a woman of great wisdom, and to disclose the cruelty of shylock. The play is a triumph of friendship and love over greed and avarice, good over evil, humanity over inhumanity.

Theme: give a vivid picture of Tess’ miserable existence as labourer on the Flintcomb-Ash farm.

The striking scene is characteristic of the disintegration of peasantry in England, and of the capitalist exploitation and oppression. Besides, in Hardy’s opinion, the characters are subject to a blind fate that, like the landscape, is indifferent to human pain and suffering.悲观主义思想,人在大自然面前的渺小。

The 20th century

Modernism in English literature

特征:Alienation and loneliness are the basic themes of modernism. In the eyes of modernist writers, the modern world is a chaotic混乱的one and is incomprehensible. Although modern society is materially rich, it is spiritually barren贫瘠的. It is a land of spiritual and emotional sterility不孕and some critics have developed. 没有连贯的情节,不按时间顺序来写作,将过去,现在,将来,并列在一起。“MAKE IT NEW”!

Heart of Darkness

Theme: describes the European whites’ pouring into Africa with the slogan of “opening it to civilization” as a cover and their ec onomic invasion of Africa by plundering掠夺, enslaving and slaughtering屠宰the native blacks cruelly for their own power, ambition and material interest. So with sharp images Conrad bitterly satirizes the inhumanity of imperialism and colonialism.

3. D.H. Lawrence

In his belief, man’s spirit was thwarted by industrialized Western culture.

Theme: The theme of Women in Love seems to be simply the man-woman relationship of which two types are represented, but its true significance lies in Lawrence’s thorough-going exploration into intimate human relationships against the deadening background and the somber atmosphere of industrialized capitalist England in the early 20th century.

Theme: discloses the loneliness and helplessness of humans, the meaninglessness of life, and the absurdity of human conditions in the post-industrial society in a symbolic way.

Theme: illustrates the fundamental corruption and evil in human nature.

The French lieutenant’s woman

三个结局:Three endings are projected in the story. In one ending, Charles fulfills his promise to Ernestina. They get married and Sarah’s fate is not mentioned. In the second, Charles breaks his engagement to Ernestina and becomes disinherited and disgraced. He finally finds Sarah, who flees to London without inf orming him. Charles’ discovery of their little daughter implies a happy reunion. In the third, Sarah, determined to seek her freedom and independence, refuses to live together with Charles.

Theme:With realistic characterization and description as well as a modernistic perspective, the novel is a parody模仿of Victorian novels to criticize the hypocritical and conservative Victorian morals and social conventions, which hinder阻碍people’s mutual understanding and communication. It is also a meditation on human existential state and an advocacy主张of freedom and self-assertion.
