Abstract.VirtualInterfacesandVisibilityMasksareanextremelyefficientmethodforparallelisingtheRadiosityMethod.Theyexploitdatalocality,andkeepcommunicationbetweennodesaslowaspossible.Previouspapersonthistechniquehavebeenmainlyconcernedwithrawperformance,andhavefailedtoanalysehowthesetechniquescanimpactonthequalityofthefinalimage.Thispaperexplorestheefficiencyofgeneratingvisibilitymasks,andanalysesthetradeoffbetweenimagequalityandspeed.

1IntroductionAscomputingpowerhasincreasedinthelastfewyears,ithasbecomepossibletorenderlargerandmorecomplicatedsceneswithinareasonabletime-frame.Asthesescenesgrowlarger,problemsareencounteredwhenusingtheradiositymethodtorenderthem.Sincetheradiositymethodexhibitsalackofdatalocality,largescenescannoteffectivelyexploitthememoryhierarchyofthecomputer.Whenusingtheray-tracingalgorithm,thecomputationoftwoadjacentpixelswillmostprobablyresultinasimilarsetofraysbeingcast,andasimilarsetofocclusionsbeingtestedfor.Theresultantmemoryaccesspatternscanmakeeffectiveuseofthecomputer’smemoryhierarchy,asthedatawhichisusedforcalculatingthesecondpixelwillhavebeenreadintothecacheasaresultofthepreviouscalculation.However,whenwelookattheradiositymethod,anditsone-to-manyshootingpatterns,itisimmediatelyobviousthatthesepatternswillnotgainasmuchbenefitfromcaching.Sincethearrivalofradiosityontotherenderingarena,mostworkaimedatimprov-ingcomputationalefficiencyhasconcentratedonreducingthenumberofnecessarycomputations,oronusingtightlycoupledmultiprocessormachines.Fewsolutionshaveconcentratedontheissueofdatalocality.Thosethathavearemostlybasedondivideandconquerstrategies:Bydividingthesceneintolocalenvironments,wegetimproveddatalocalityinthesubscenes.
