A few days later, he brought the watch back to the captain. “How much shall I pay?” the captain asked. “Nothing, sir.” Jim said. He took out a small box and gave it to the captain and said, “In the box are three wheels from your watch, I couldn’t find any places for them when I put everything back.”

On a farm lived a father and a son. The father always got up early and read books by the stove. One morning, the son came up to him and said, “Dad, I read books at night but forget most of them the next morning. What’s the good of reading?”

The father didn’t reply to his question at once. He passed him a basket that was used to carry coal. He said, “Get some water from the river with the basket and then I’ll tell you the answer.”

The son felt surprised but he did as his father said. He tried many times but every time the water leaked(漏掉) form the basket.

An hour later, the son came back with the empty basket and told his father it was

impossibl e to hold water with the basket. The father said with a smile, “Yes, you are right, my son. The basket can’t hold water. But did you notice the basket was different?” The son found the dirty basket had become clean. The father continued, “Reading is like h olding water with the basket. Although we can’t remember all we read, we have changed while reading.”

Zak’s grandfather, Stan was very fa mous. Why? Because he had a very, very, very long white beard(胡子).

One day,Zak asked his grandfather,“When you sleep, do you put your beard over or under the quilt(被子)?” “I’m not sure. I never care about that,” said his grandfather,“I’ll look tonight.”

Sta n got into bed that night and pulled up the quilt. Then he remembered his grandson’s question. Aha! His beard was under the quilt. But wait. Did that feel right?

He lifted his beard from under the quilt and put it above it. This also didn’t feel right. So he put the beard under the quilt again. But he soon felt it would be better if it were out. The beard went in and out—first under the quilt, then over it, under, over, all night long.

Stan spent a sleepless night. In the morning, he was so tired and unhappy that he cut his long beard right off!

Stan’s wife was so happy. She advised Stan to cut that beard off many times,but he never did it. Now a simple question made him do that.
