We learned all about the incredible life cycle of silkworms and the intricate process of harvesting and weaving their fine silk threads into gorgeous fabrics and embroideries. We even got to try our hand at silk embroidery which was much harder than it looks!Of course, you can't visit Suzhou without sampling the city's renowned delicacies. For breakfast, we had piping hot soup dumplings (xiaolongbao) that were bursting with flavorful broth. My brother loved the sticky rice balls filled with sweet black sesame paste (tang yuan). The Suzhou-style mooncakes we tried were incredibly delicate with a gorgeous egg yolk center.My mom stocked up on boxes of Suzhou'smelt-in-your-mouth almondcakes (anxin gao) which are one of the city's most famous desserts. And we all went crazy for the succulent Suzhou-style duck and fresh water hairy crab - so much better than anything I've tasted at home! Even the street food in Suzhou was amazing with vendors selling delicious candied strawberries on a stick and warm, pillowy bao stuffed with pork.While the gardens, waterways, and food were all amazing, my very favorite part of our Suzhou trip was simply wanderingaround the narrow alleyways and streets of the old city neighborhoods. With their stone bridges, traditional architecture, street food vendors, and lively atmosphere, it felt like being transported back to dynastic China. I loved watching the elderly neighborhood ladies gossiping over mah-jongg games and skilled craftsmen hand-making everything from noodles to fans to wooden carvings.We also visited some of the exquisite temples in the historic areas like the iconic Twin Pagodas and the Hanshan Temple with its gigantic camphor wood Buddha statue. We have a few embroidery hangings from Suzhou up in our house.Places like the Silk Embroidery Institute teach the ancient techniques to young students to keep the tradition alive. We got to see rows and rows of women with magnifying glasses working on their pieces. It was mesmerizing to watch how they made the thread into different pictures and shapes. I don't think I'd have the patience for something so detailed!The tie-dyed cloth from Suzhou is super cool too. Artisans take white fabric and use plant dyes to create the most vibrant shades of blue, red, green and more. They fold, twist and bind the fabric in certain ways before dyeing so it comes out in awesome patterns. I got a tie-dyed scarf to bring back home as a souvenir. The colors are still bright after all these months.Nom Nom Delicious FoodLast but definitely not least, the cuisine in Suzhou is simply out of this world! My favorite dishes are xiaolongbao (little soup dumplings), anshuan fen (almond pastry "noodles"), and meipian (sweet fermented rice balls). I dream about these foods all the time when I'm back home.The xiaolongbao are so delicate and perfect. Each dumpling wrapper is thin but still manages to contain a little pool of flavorful soup inside along with the pork filling. You have to follow very precise instructions to pick them up with your chopsticks, make a hole in the side, sip out the broth first, then dip the dumpling in vinegar before eating it whole. It's such a fun little routine every time. I've tried making them at home but they never turn out as good.The anshuan fen is made from super long strands of chewy rice dough that look just like golden noodles. But they're actually a dessert! The "noodles" are covered in a sugar syrup and warm almond milk. You pick them up and slurp them in exactly like real noodles. My mouth waters just thinking about that warm, nutty sweetness.Meipian are these mildly sweet fermented rice balls with a slightly crunchy texture on the outside and soft insides. They'regreen because they're made from rice that was fermented inside bamboo shoots with special herbs and spices. Meipian is a type of "farmer's food" that locals have been cooking for generations. It's definitely an acquired taste but I got addicted!I try to convince my parents to take me to Suzhou every chance we get. Between the tranquil gardens, atmospheric canals, amazing handicrafts, and yummy cuisine, it's such a cool place to experience ancient Chinese culture and traditions. A visit to Suzhou feels like taking a step back in time to a bygone era where things were simpler and more beautiful. I hope you get a chance to see it for yourself one day.
