Chitosanisnon-toxic,biocompatibleandbiodegradablepolysaccharidecomposedofglucosamineandderivedbydeacetylationofchitin.Chitosanthermosensitivehydrogelhasbeendevelopedtoformagelinsitu,precludingtheneedforsurgicalimplantation.Inthisreview,therecentadvancesinchitosanther-mosensitivehydrogelsbasedondifferentglycerophosphatearesummarized.Thehydrogelispreparedwithchitosanand␤-glycerophosphateor␣␤-glycerophosphatewhichisliquidatroomtemperatureandtransitsintogelastemperatureincreases.Thegelationmechanismmayinvolvemultipleinteractionsbetweenchitosan,glycerophosphate,andwater.Thesolutionbehavior,rheologicalandphysicochemicalproperties,andgelationprocessofthehydrogelareaffectednotonlybythemoleculeweight,deacetyla-tiondegree,andconcentrationofchitosan,butalsobythekindandconcentrationofglycerophosphate.Thepropertiesandthethree-dimensionalnetworksofthehydrogelofferthemwideapplicationsinbiomedicalfieldincludinglocaldrugdeliveryandtissueengineering.©2014ElsevierLtd.Allrightsreserved.

1.Introduction

Hydrogelsarecomposedofthree-dimensionalpolymer

networksthathaveahighnumberofhydrophilicgroups.The

hydrogelscanabsorblargequantitiesofwaterandwillneither

disintegratenordissolve.Fullyswollenhydrogelsaresoft,pliable,

andlowinterfacialtensionwithwaterorbiologicalfluids.The

highwatercontentofhydrogelrendersitcompatiblewithmost

livingtissueandtheviscoelasticnatureofhydrogelminimizes

damagetothesurroundingtissuewhenitisimplantedinthe
