Module 2 No Drugs Period One The General Idea of This Period This period consists of three parts, that is, Introduction, Speaking and Writing. Through studying the facts about smoking in introduction, make sure that the students realize smoking is very serious. Then let the students do some word practice. The three questions in activity 3 and the questions in speaking can be used as a whole. Group or pair work can be used now. This part is to train the students’ speaking abilities. After discussion, ask some pairs to present their discussing results. In writing, the students will read an email to Zhou Kai from a pen friend in the US, asking him some questions about smoking in China. Read it quickly and choose the correct subject for the email from three suggestions in activity 1. Then write a reply and answer his questions and ask similar questions to him. The purpose is for the students to learn to share their opinions about smoking. Meanwhile, pay attention to the way of writing an email. Teaching Aims 1) Make the Ss get to know the dangers of smoking and encourage them to lead a healthy life. 2) Learn some new words related to smoking and improve the Ss’ speaking and writing skills. Teaching Important Points 1. Make the students know the dangers of smoking by reading the facts in this part. 2. Teach the students some new words: bronchitis, cancer, cigarette, heart disease 3. Train the students’ speaking and writing abilities. Teaching Difficult Point 1. Lead the students to talk in class actively. 2. Help them to make sense of the new words and facts related to smoking. 3. Improve the students’ speaking and writing skills. Teaching Methods 1) Train the students’ speaking ability through individual and pair work. 2) Encourage the students to participate in class actively. Teaching Procedures

Step 1 Introduction 1. Lead-in The teacher can use a cigarette to lead in the topic. Then play a video or show them some pictures about the bad results that smoking caused. 2. Activity 1 Ask the students to read facts about smoking and choose the answers you think are correct.

1. During the 1990s, (21 thousand/21 million) people died as a result of smoking cigarette. 2. A quarter of young people who smoke more than (10/20) cigarettes a day will die prematurely as a result of smoking. 3. In the United Kingdom, smoking causes (12 000/121 000) deaths a year. 4. Thirteen people die (every hour/every day) from illness related to smoking tobacco, such as cancer, bronchitis and hear disease. 5. Every year, about (20/200) people are killed and (200/2000)are seriously injured in fires caused by smoking.

After they decide on the answers individually, they can check with a partner. Then the teacher may collect the answers in a whole-class setting, having the students read out the complete sentences. Suggested answers: 21 million 10 121 000 every hour 200 2000 2. Activity 2 Find word in the box which means: Show the following on the Bb:

Read the words and have the students repeat after you. Pay attention to the stress of the multi-syllable words: bronchitis, cigarette, disease, tobacco. Ask the students to relate the words to their meanings individually, and then collect their answers. Suggested answers: death die, cigarette tobacco, bronchitis cancer heart disease, injured Step 2 Speaking Activity 3 and speaking Pair the students to discuss the three questions in activity 3 and the four questions in speaking. Show the following questions on the Bb. 1 Why do people smoke cigarette? 2 Where do people smoke? Where can’t they smoke? 3 Is there any anti-smoking advertising in China? Questions in speaking: 1 Has anyone been to your school to talk about the dangers of smoking? 2 Are your friends and family mainly smokers or non-smokers? 3 What is the public attitude to smoking in the place where you live? 4 Do you think you will be a smoker when you leave school and start work?

First make sure under the questions and then ask them to discuss them in pairs. If time permits, ask some pairs to present their discussions. Step 3 Writing 1. Activity1 Read this email from a student in the US. Choose the correct subject for the email survey from these three suggestions. Show the following Bb. 1. Public transport 2. Smoking 3. Things which are against the law Dear Zhou Kai, How are you? We’re doing a class survey and I have to write emails to all my pen friends in other countries. I hope you don’t mind answering these questions. 1 Do most adults smoke in China? 2 In most states in the US, it is now against the law to smoke in public buildings, such as banks and offices, on public transport and in restaurants and cafes. Is it the same in China? 3 Is the government planning to change the law about smoking in public?
