Teaching Aids 1. the book exercise 2. the blackboard Teaching Procedures Step 1: Greeting and lead-in Ask Ss to think Mao Zedong’ poem about The Yangtse River, and use the verse to lead in the reading part: the Three Gorges Dam. In china, there are two rivers: The Yellow River and The Yangtse River. The Yangtse River is the home to one of beautiful natural scenes. There was a poem about The Yangtse River written by Mao Zedong. Do you know it? Yes, its name is Swimming in which he dreamed of “Walls of stone will stand upstream to the west To hold back Wushan's clouds and rain Till a smooth lake rises in the narrow gorges.” but now it has come true. It has been a reality. This project has been finished – The Three Gorges Dam. The pictures give us some information. Like China’s Great Wall, it will be one of the few manmade structures that can be seen from space. It’s a symbol of national pride. After we know of the dam, let’s begin to learn the Lesson – The Three Gorges Dam.
Step 2: Fast Reading
(1) Ask Ss to read the text roughlyly to find out the words in the boxes in Activities 1 & 2. Then ask them to discuss in pairs and finish Activity 1. Tell them the reading skill at the same time by asking them to read the “Learning to learn”. (2) Give some explanations about some words in Activity 2 (3) Ask Ss to answer the questions in Activity 2. 1.dream v. (hope for sth. nice in the future) He often dreams of going to Europe. 2. generate vt. (cause to exist, produce) e.g. Loud laughter was generated all through the crowd. 3. harness vt. (use a river, waterfall, etc. to produce power) e.g. It is a good idea to harness the river to generate electricity. 4.submerge v. (go under the surface of the water) e.g. The crocodile submerged when it saw the boat. First, please read the text quickly to find out the words in the boxes in Activities 1 & 2. In the process of reading, if you find a new word, make sure you read the whole sentence. Try to work out the meaning of the woed. Then use the words before and after that help you guess the meaning.
