His ancestors took over nearlyevery island in the South Pacific Ocean in what was perhaps the greatestachievement before humans went to the moon. Only recently have scientists begun tounderstand where these amazing sailors came from, and how, with simpleboats and no navigation equipment, they could manage to find hundreds ofdistant islands that cover nearly a third of the globe. This expansion into thePacific was achieved by two wonderful peoples: the Lapita and the Polynesians.Howdid the Lapita and early Polynesian pioneers do this? Very little evidenceremains to help scientists understand their great sailing skills. However, withlittle evidence, scientists have been able to develop some theories about thesecrets of these explorers’ success.Sailorshave always relied upon the so-called trade winds, winds that blow steadily and in predictable directionsover the ocea n’s surface. Geoff Irwin, a professor of archeology notesthat the Lapita’s expansion into the Pacific was eastward, against steady tradewinds. Sailing against the wind, he argues, may have been the key to theirsuccess.AtholAnderson of the Australian National University believes that they may also havebeen lucky—helped by a weather phenomenon known as EI Nino. E1 Nino occurs inthe Pacific Ocean when the surface water temperature is unusually high. Itaffects world weather in a variety of ways, but one of its effects is to causetrade winds in the South Pacific to weaken or to change direction and blow tothe east. Scientists believe that E1 Nino phenomena were unusually frequentaround the time of the Lapita expansion, and again when early Polynesians begantheir even more distant journeys.Thesuccess of the Lapita and the Polynesian may have been because of their ownsailing skills, of reverse trade winds, of a mixture of both, or even offacts still unknown. But it is certain that by the time Europeans came to thePacific, nearly every piece of land, hundreds of islands in all, had alreadybeen discovered by the Lapita and the Polynesians.(1)What does the underlined part “amazing sailors” in Para.1 refer to?A . The Lapita and early Polynesians.B . Manutea Owen and his islanders.C . Men who went to the moon.D . Today’s Polynesians.(2)What is Irwin’s theory about the Lapita ?A . They stopped sailing when the weather changed.B . Their sailors knew how to sail against the wind.C . Their navigational skills are well understood.D . They needed to find food on other islands.(3)How might El Nino have helped early Pacific sailors?A . By changing the direction of trade windsB . By decreasing the water temperature.C . By providing more fishes for themD . By bringing more rain to them(4)What would be the best title for the text?A . What the early Polynesians discoveredB . How E1 Nino helped the ancient peoplesC . What sailing skills the Lapita had learnedD . How ancient peoples explored the Pacific二、任务型阅读(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)4. 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
