Heshun
L&G:
I’m very pleased to serve as your tour guide. Today we will visit the ancient town heshun,
which is praised as the “hometown of overseas Chinese” and “the first of the ten top charming
towns in china”.
Before we reach heshun town, I’d like to give you some introduction
Heshun is about 3 km west of tengchong county, which used to be called “ yangwendun
village”. With a river running through it, so the village later renamed as “heshun”(means along the
river).
In ancient times, the southern silk route has connected china with Southeast Asia, south Asia
and Europe. Tengchong was a vital communications center of this route. Situated on this route,
heshun enjoyed many conveniences for business. In this town it was a standard practice that men
should go abroad to make a fortune. So, the population here are no more than 7000 but now the
number of people who live abroad equals 107% of the current population of the township.
the overseas Chinese from this township are distributed in southeast Asia, Europe, America
and more than ten other countries. That’s why heshun is known as a famous hometown of
overseas Chinese.
Ok, the information is enough. Let’s march into the ancient town! Now, we are at the
entrance of the town. You can see a splendid memorial archway with the four Chinese characters
“和顺顺和“ (meaning heshun enjoys harmony and peace). Now we are walking along the old
road, which was paved with slabs. On the both sides of the road, you can enjoy the beautiful
scenery and rich culture of this little town. beside the road, The Sanhehe river flows by the town
from east to west.
Walk on we can see 2 arch stone bridges look like 2 rainbows. Thus, the bridges are called
Shuanghong bridges(double rainbow bridges)”. The scenery around the bridges is picturesque. So,
local people often go there for an outing in spring and for appreciating the moon in autumn.
On the bridge, you can see a lotus pond, where there is a pavilion called “Yuzhou pavilion”.
It was built in memory of an important educator, which indicates that local people attach great
importance to education and show great respect for teachers.
Let’s walk down the bridges, now we have come to the heshun library, it is the earliest and
largest rural library in china. in the late Qing Dynasty, there arose a progressive organization
called “xianxin she”, which aimed at popularizing new ideas and new cultures. In 1929, some
heshun overseas Chinese started a progressive publication and established a reading league. Then,
the reading league was developed into a library. In 1938, with a growing collection of books and
increasing number of reader, the old library was pulled down; a new library was erected on its site.
Now let walk into the library. with a glorious history, the library is a two--storied building in
both west and Chinese styles it covers a area of 1450 square meters. Upstairs are stack rooms
while downstairs are reading rooms. It totally houses 70 thousand books, many of which are rare
editions of ancient works. The library feels honoured with the inscriptions by such famous figures
as hushi, li shiceng, xiong qinglai, and liao chengzhi.
Now the library becomes the pride of heshun people and provides a second classroom for
them. This library is also the first place to provide news paper to local people. Now the library is a
state-protected relic site.
Leaving the library. let’s pay more attention to another feature of heshun--architecture. On
the way to library, we have seen many local buildings. certainly, there are a great variety of
structures, such as ancestral temples, memorial archways, pavilions. Most of them were built in
the qing dynasty and by overseas Chinese. Among them ancestral temples are the most
magnificently constructed. There are altogether eight temples of eight families in the town. The
Cun family is the most representative.
The ancestral temple of the Cuns was first built during the jiaqing period of the qing dynasty.
In 1935, when a new gate was built, some western architectural elements were adopted. walking
into the gate, we can see an inscribed board in the main hall by an emperor of the Ming dynasty to
cunyu, an ancestor of the family. Inside the hall, we can see that the confucianist ethical code was
regarded as the family motto. Outside the hall, you can find that the pictures of 24 stories about
filial piecy were used as a decoration.
Besides, civil residential houses are worth visiting. The most typical is “wanlouzi”. The
building got the name because its walls were built along the curved alley. Wanlouzi used to be the
