45 Some Famous Rivers
The world's longest river is the Nile. It flows from central Africa 6670 km north to the Mediterranean Sea. If all the bends were straightened out, it would reach about one third of the distance from the North Pole to the South Pole.
The longest river in the United Kingdom is the River Severn．Being only 354km long，it is a mere stream com－
pared with the world's greatest rivers．
The muddiest river in the world is the Huanghe River in China．It rises in the mountains of Tibet and flows into the Bohai Sea．The river is called “yellow”because of the yellow mud the river carries down from the desert into the sea，making water into a dirty yellow colour. When the river reaches the plain and flows less fast，it drops much of its mud filling up the river-bed and forcing the water to overflow its banks and s food the countryside．In the old days，these terrible floods washed away crops and destroyed whole villages．They brought death to so many people that the river was sometimes called “China's Sorrow”．Then dams and power stations have been built and thousands of trees have been planted．The Yellow River is no longer “China's Sorrow”．

于是修建了堤坝和发电站，种植了成千上万棵树。
黄河不再是“黄祸”了。
