1象棋是一门群众性很强又很普及的文体活动。当人们工作、学习之余，凑在一起下上几盘，可以恢诬疲劳，锻炼智力，有助于思维，有利于身心健康。但是，下棋的人们则有的水平较高，有的水平较低。有的人下几年棋，就提高了水平，有的下十几年成几十年棋，却总是投有提高多少。于是就提出了这样一个问题:怎样才能提高棋艺水平呢?
要回答这个问题，须要从几个方面解释。有一首诗说:“象棋易学最难精，妙着神势巧自生。十里封获驰铁马，隔河飞炮攻重城。摆阵出车冲要塞，出奇制胜破雄兵。运筹帷握千里外，指点江山掌握中。”这首七律的头两句点出了提高棋艺水平的要害，它说得是学会下棋容易，练精了难。怎么办?妙着神势得自己动脑筋想办法。古谱中管这叫做“宜用心机”。诗的最后两句又告诉我们买“运筹帷握”，“指点扛山沙。就是说下棋得象行兵打仗一样，好好谋划，指挥炮马车兵进行战斗，还要牵一子而观全貌，以统筹全局。这些都是非常重要的。
下棋除了要具有诗中所讲的正确的思想基础之外，还应采取什么方法呢?一般地说提高棋艺水平有两大渠道。
