I. Background information:
The 1960s were turbulent times for the United States. The anti-war movement, the Civil Right
movement, the counter-culture movement, the feminist movement were all unfolding in this
period of time. The civil Rights movement was a major movement which began with the Supreme
Court decision of Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka in 1954 and the Montgomery bus
boycott of 1955. Martin Luther King jr. (1929-1968), as a key leader of the movement, played a

The students enjoy a short video clip and share opinions on the purpose of learning.
Beginning with the earliest pioneers, Americans have always highly valued their freedoms, and fought hard to protect them.And yet, the author points out that there is a basic freedom which Americans are in danger of losing.
What is this endangered freedom? For what reasons could freedom-loving Americans possibly let this freedom slipaway? And what-steps can they take to protect it —— their fifth freedom?
