Long ago, in ancient China, the Jade Emperor
decided to hold a race among all the animals to
determine which twelve would be chosen as the
symbols of the Chinese zodiac. The prize for
winning this race was immortal fame and a place
in the heavens.
The race began at the break of dawn. The Cat,
who was good friends with the Rat, asked the Rat
to wake him up early so they could start the
journey together. However, the Rat, secretly
coveting the first place, woke up early but left
without waking the Cat.
As the sun rose, the Ox, known for its
strength and determination, lumbered into the
lead. The Rat, however, had a cunning plan. He
managed to jump onto the Ox's back, hiding from
view. Just as the Ox was about to cross the finish
line, the Rat leaped off and scampered across
