Reflection on the Course of Phonology

2010级语言学班 李裕玲

It is meaningful for me to learn phonology this semester, since I

may continue to teach English in a high school or a college in

Guizhou province where the foreign language learning is relatively

undeveloped. In the whole, not only the students but also the

primary and secondary school teachers here are short of a systematic

knowledge on phonology, which is crucial in both listening and oral

English. Through the study of speech organs, I now know more

about the structure of the three cavities and the pronunciation rules

of the English language. therefore, I have a further understanding of

the IPA. It gives specific separate letters for each distinctive sound.

The letters are mainly from Roman alphabets, and the IPA can be

used to describe any language. I shall use them to describe the

dialect of my hometown and the language spoken by the minority in

the countryside of my county.

Phonology covers a vast area, for me this is only the

beginning. Some revelation I got when learning are:

Rule Ordering helps me master the explanation about the

pronunciation of plurality. There are the underlying form [z], the

epenthesis [i], and the devoicing [s]. I have known the order of these

rules, epenthesis comes first, and then the devoicing, finally the underlying form. Thus it shall help my students understand and

remember this phenomenon better, which maybe appear in the first

part of the College Entrance Examination.

I am especially attracted by the Optimality Theory. It is a

unique scientific way for the study of linguistics, syntax and

language acquisition as well. Interest is the best teacher. Trying to

understand as much as possible in the classroom is the first step. It is

by no means that I should gain so much in classes. I surely will

employ the theory learned from our Professor in the future study.
