AbstractTheobjectiveoftheworkdescribedinthisfirstpaperofaseriesisaninvestigationofthepreparationofasulfonatedespartograsslignin(SEL)anditsbehaviorasaplasticizing–water-reducingagentforcement–watersystems.SELispreparedbyextractingtheligninfromtheblackliquorofasodaespartograsspulpingprocessandthensulfonatingitwithamixtureofsodiumsulfiteandformaldehyde.AnalysesandcharacterizationofSELcarriedoutwithhigh-performancesizeexclusionchromatography(HPSEC),reversedphasechromatography(RPC),infraredspectrometryandchemicalmethodsshowthatboththemolecularweightaverageandthecombinedsulfurcontentarerelativelyhigh.Moreover,HPSECshowsthatSELhasarelativelymoreuniformmolecularweightdistribution(MWD)thanthecommercialproductsobtainedfromthesulfitewoodpulpingprocess.Ontheotherhand,SELcouldreducethewatercontent,improvetheworkabilityandcompressivestrengthofmortars.SELalsopermitsaverylowrateofslumplossofcementswithoutexcessiveextensionofthefinalsettime.D2003ElsevierScienceLtd.Allrightsreserved.

1.IntroductionManychemicalsareusedasplasticizersorsuperplasti-cizersforconcrete[1–8].Thiskindofconcreteadmixturesincludes,amongotherthings,sulfonatedalkalisaltsofnaphthaleneormelamineformaldehydepolymers[3,4],sodiumorcalciumsaltsoflignosulfonicacids[5,6,8]aswellascertainhydroxycarboxylicacidsandtheiralkalisalts[4].Thechoiceofwhichsurfactanttoemploydependsontheperformancesneededaswellasthecostandavailabilityofthesurfactant.Amongtheseadmixtures,thelignosulfonates(LS)obtainedinthepulpingindustryasaby-productofthesulfiteprocessareusefulasdispersingagentforconcrete[5,6,8],drillingmuds[9]andorganicdyes[10]andalsoasanticak-ingagentforfertilizers[11]andemulsifierinanimalfeed.Unlikethetraditionalsulfitepulping[12,13],thesodapulpingprocessallowsfortherecoveryofanunsulfonatedformoflignin,whichhasnotbeenpossibletouseforsimilarpurposesduetothelackofanyhydrophilicgroups.

InTunisia,ahighqualityofpulpisproducedusingthedigestionofespartograss(Stipatenacissima)accordingtoasodaprocess.Attheendofthecooking,thenoncellulosicfraction(essentiallylignin)isdissolvedinadarkalkalinesolutionwiththechemicalsthathavenotreacted.Thisblackliquorisconcentratedupto36%ofsolidsandthenburnedinafurnacetoproduceenergyandrecoversodatoreuseinfurthercooking.Thereadershouldnotethatundertheseconditionstherecoveryandrecyclingofsodaisnotapayingpropositionbutisenvironmentallyessential;itwouldbemostdesirablefrombothaneconomicandecologicalstandpointtoconvertthisby-productintoacommerciallyusableform.TheeffectivenessofLSisbelievedtobestronglyinfluencedbytheirstructureandtheirmolecularweightdistribution(MWD)[14,15].Asligninisaverycomplexnaturalpolymerwithmanyrandomcouplings[14,16],itschemicalstructure,physicalandchemicalpropertiesdifferdependingonitsextractionorigin(hardandsoftwood,straw,cornstalks,bagasseandthelike).Thus,wehaveassumedthatligninextractedfromespartograsscanleadtosulfonatedespartograsslignin(SEL)thatcanbeusedasaneffectiveplasticizer–waterreducerforcement–watersys-

CementandConcreteResearch33(2003)995–1003temsorforotherpurposessuchasdispersantfordyesoranticakingagentforNPKfertilizers.Thereadershouldberemindedthatinapreviousstudy[17],weshowedthatamixtureofespartoligninwithpolyformaldehydenaphtha-lenesulfonatecanleadtoausefulsuperplasticizerpermit-tingaverylowrateofslumplossofcements.ThemainobjectiveofthisfirstpaperofaseriesistoprovideanSELstartingfromblackliquorasrawmaterial.Thisproductisthenstudiedasapossibledispersantandwater-reducingagentincement–watersystemstoassessitspropertiesincomparisonwiththoseofcommercialproducts.Thispaperstudiesthepreparationandtheanalysesofasolublesulfonatedligninfromespartolignin;thisalsoincludesthelaboratorytestprogramdesignedtodeterminetheeffectoftheproductsonwaterreduction,setretardation,workability,flow–timerelationshipandmechanicalprop-ertiesofwater–cementsystems.
