One day in 1925 John Baird pulled an office boy into his workroom and seated him down in front of his equipmen t. The boy’s face could clearly be seen on the simple screen a few feet away. That office boy was the first person ever to appear on television!

Baird was the son of a clergyman (牧师). He went to a technical college and then to Glasgow University. It was there he first had the idea of transmitting pictures.

He was not a healthy man. That’s why he was rejected for army service at the time of the first

World War and had to work in a power station. After the war he tried to set up in business several times without real success. Returning to London he started again on his idea of television.

He was so poor that he accepted an offer to show his experiments in a big London store. Money from his parents allowed him to continue his work. When he gained more success and transmitted a reasonably clear picture over long distance, he was offered help. Businessmen who before had refused to help now eagerly offered to share in the development of this invention. Big companies in America spent a lot of money in improving his equipment. When the BBC made the first ever television broadcast in 1936, American equipment was used. When the BBC started its television service again after the Second World War, it used equipment from Baird’s own company.

John Baird died in 1946 and did not live to see television enter the majority of homes in Britain.

The President: Let me answer the knowledge economy (经济) question first. And let me answer by telling you I have tried to do in the United States. I have tried to produce a situation in America in which the doors of universities and colleges are open to every young person who has sufficient academic achievement (足够的文化程度) to get in, that there are no financial burdens (经济负担) of any kind. And we have not completely achieved it, but have made a great deal of progress.

Now, why would I do that? Because I believe that the more advanced an economy becomes, the more important it is to have a higher and higher percentage (百分比) of people with a university education. Let me tell you how important it is in the United States. We count our people --- very 10 years we do a census and we count the number of the American people and we get all kinds of information on them. In the 1990 Census, younger Americans who had two years or more of university education were likely to get good jobs and have their incomes grow. Younger Americans who didn’t go to university at all were likely to get jobs where their incomes went down and were much more likely to be unemployed.

And the more advanced China’s economy becomes, the more that will be true of Ch ina --- the more you will need very large numbers of people getting university education and technical education. So I think it is very, very important.

Time and time again, one may be warned, “Your name will be mud.” Many have used the expression in the mistaken belief that it has something to do with the kind of dirt found in the streets or on unclean river bottoms. But the expression comes from the name of Doctor Samuel Alexander Mudd, a physician who fixed the broken leg of John Wilkes Booth, the man who killed President Abraham Lincoln. Doctor Mudd treated Booth’s injured leg without knowing who he was.

A small group helped Booth to plan Lincoln’s murder. They were all caught and sentenced to death or prison terms.

Doctor Mudd had nothing to do with Lincoln’s murder or with any of the men who had planned. All seemed to show that he was an innocent (清白) man. But he had given some kind of help only to leave Booth to escape. This in itself was a crime (犯罪) then. And so, Doctor Mudd was sentenced to prison for life.

In prison, Doctor saved many prisoners and guards in a yellow fever outbreak. President Andrew Johnson pardoned him in 1869, after the doctor had spent almost four years in prison.

The American people considered the murder of Lincoln a heavy blow to them. It filled them with bitterness that lasted many years. They hated Booth very, very much and they also hated anybody who had helped the murderer in any way. Doctor Mudd was freed, but people never forgave him and his name passed into American folk speech as something bad hateful. The Mudd family had also suffered a lot because of the name until not long ago.

For a long time being happy was considered something that just happened, and there was nothing special to do about it. Now we know that getting along with ourselves and with other people is something that we can work at. It is possible to act in such a way that other people will like us better. One way is being unselfish, not wanting everything our own way or demanding the best share of everything, including the attention of our friends. Another way is to look for good points, not bad ones in other people, it is surprising how successful this treasure hunt can be.

You don’t have to be spineless (懦弱) in order to be popular, in fact, you will be liked and respected if you are not afraid to stand up for your rights. But do it politely and pleasantly. Being friendly and polite to your own group, to older people, to strangers and especially to those who do not look important or do not interest you is one way to develop a good character.

You cannot expect to be perfect, and so you must learn not to be too unhappy when you make a mistake. Everyone makes mistakes, and no one is to be blamed unless he refuses to lean from them. Many young people become discouraged when they recognize in themselves qualities that they do not like --- selfishness, laziness and other unpleasant qualities. Just remember that we all have some of these faults and have to fight against them.

At the same time, it is important to remember, that while you are probably no worse that others, chances are you are not much better, either. The surest way to be happy is to think yourself above other people.

72.One of the two ways the author suggested for us to get along well with others is ______.

A.to draw attention of our friends

B.to demand the best share of everything

C.to look for treasure in order to be successful

D.to pay more attention to other people’s strong points

73.According to the passage, if one wants to be popular one needs to ______.

A.be polite and friendly

B.give up some rights

C.avoid arguing with other people

D.be ready to change his / her mind

74.The passage shows that there is no perfect person but someone should be blamed if he______.

A.makes a big mistake

B.is selfish and lazy

C.does not draw a lesson from his own fault

D.is very unhappy about his unpleasant quality

75. The passage implies (暗示) that in order to be a happy person, one should consider oneself ______.

A.no better than others

B.not the same as others

C.as having something better than others

D.as having more chances than others

Which animal is the cleverest in the world? Maybe you’d like to know the answer. A teacher

in a famous school wanted to find out the result, too. So he recently made several experiments with different animals. At last he reached his answer --- the monkey was more intelligent than other animals.

In one experiment, the teacher put a monkey in a room. At eh same time, he put a few small boxes in the room. Some boxes were inside others. One small box had some food inside it, which the monkey likes best. The teacher wanted to watch the monkey and find out how long it would take the monkey to find the food. The teacher closed the door and left the room. He waited a few

minutes outside the door. Then he came close to the door and put his eye to the keyhole. He thought the hungry monkey would be searching for food. What did he see? The money opened the boxes one by one. When it almost got the smallest box which had food in, it looked around. Then to the teacher’s surprise, the monkey didn’t open the la st box. It walked gently to the door and looked through the other side of the keyhole!
