Abstract A structure oflogical hierarchical clusterforthe distributed multimedia on demand server is proposed. I e architecture is mainly composed ofthe network topology and the resource management of all server nodes.Instead of the physical network hierarchy orthe independentmanagementhierarchy, the nodes are organizedinto alogicallyhierarchical clusteraccordingtothemultimediablock they caches in the midderware layer. The process of a memberjoining/leaving or the structure adjusm ̄ent cooperatively implemented by all members is concerned with decentralized maintenance ofthe logical cluster hierarchy. As the root of each logically hierarchical clus— ter is randomly mapped into the system, the logical structure of a multimedia block is dynamically expanded across some regions bythe two replication policies in different load state respectively. rhe local load diversion is applied to fine—tune the load of nodes within a lo— cal region but belongs to different logical hierarchies.Guaranteed by the dynamic expansion of a l cal structure and the load diversion of a local region, the users always select a closest idle node from the logical hierarchy underthe condition of topology integration with resource management.

Key words logical hierarchical cluster, early replication, instantaneous replication, local load diversion, constrained server selection

1 Introduction

,I’|lis paper focuses on developing a lo舀cal hierarchi— cal cluster(LHC)for each block of multimedia objects

as the decentralized architecture of the distributed

multimedia on demand(DMoD)server.Because the aggregated bandwidth requirement of the geographical—

ly distributed users is increasing beyond the capacity of the network backbone.the DMoD scheme is proposed

to distribute the load ofthe interactive MoD service to

the nodes located at the different geographicaYadmini—

strative regioils.rI'he network topology G(V,E)and

the resource management of the DMoD server nodes are the two main components(multime on demand)

involved in the design of the DMoD architecture as to

the scalability and the resource utilization. rI'he topology of the traditional schemes can be di—

vided into the static physical hierarchy and the inde・

pendent management hierarchy. In order to eusure

organized into a physical network hierarchy according

to the topology of the underlying telecommunication infrastructure_1.2].If there exists a physical link be—

tween nodes u and v in the substrate topology, the

edge e(u,v)will be emerged into the edge set E.As

an alternative scheme.au nodes of a geographical or

administrative re舀on,namely the sub—set ,are col—

lapsed into the node vj at layer L of the independent

management hierarchy .As a result.the relation be.

tween server nodes is represented with the explicit

hierarchy of administrative nodes.

The resource management scheme of the DMoD sys—

tem should cost.effectively utilize the resource of each

node to reduce the r ̄ection rate of user request. In

the process of object placement and delivery, block

placement, replication policy and server selection are

the main methods of load balance to maximize the re.

source utilization according the objects popularity and

user access behavior.Due to the limited resource of

individual node and the huge size of the multimedia

objects, block placement partitions an object into

blocks mapped on diferent nodes.Repfication can

er nodes as 维普资讯 http://www.cqvip.com l28 Journal ofShanghai University

well as alleviate the stress of network backbone for

scalability .As there exist some potential replicas in

the system at the same time.server selection is used to find an appropriate node for the user request . In the design of a DMoD server, the network topolo—

gY can be integrated with or separated from the re—

source management.Bisdikian and Patel proposed a

static cost function which comprises the parameters of the network bandwidth and storage capacity of indivi—
