Lead in: Understanding proper protocol is critically important when doing business internationally.And the etiquette is closely related to culture.The culture of France is rich and varied, the cultural blending can be compared to the US concept of the “melting-pot”.Meanwhile, Whether it‟s for business or pleasure, with proper planning the visit to the China will be a rich and rewarding one.So let‟s begin our spiritual journey in the talk of romantic France and the state of ceremonies-China .
Q1:Windy, can you introduce some knowledge of business etiquette for us? (1)French handshake is brief, and is accompanied by a short span of eye contact. Always shake hands when meeting someone, as well as when leaving. (2)The French are very conscientious of their appearance. Men should wear dark-colored, formal suits. Women can also wear business suits or formal dresses in soft colors. Q2:Snow, can you introduce some knowledge of business meeting for us?
(1)Chinese put a huge amount of importance on time, and how early you are is used to reflect how much you value those in attendance. (2)During the meeting, the Chinese will often be seen to nod and indicate their agreement. This is just a sign of acknowledging what has been said and is not a sign of accepting what has been said.
Q3:Windy, If you were to conduct a seminar entitled "How to do business in France," what advise would you give to Chinese? (1)Handshakes tend to be brisk and light, with only a couple of up and down movements. (2)Appointments should be made at least two weeks in advance, in writing, by telephone, or by email. (3)Business cards are exchanged after initial greetings and so on . Q4: Snow, In Chinese business etiquette, what do you think is characteristic, please show us?
(1)Chinese people are famed for their love of eating. There are some traditional dining customs like these: do not eat all of your meal, or the Chinese will assume you are still hungry ; do not start to eat or drink prior to the host. (2)The place of honor is always to the hosts right in chairs that are opposite the rooms doors, and this is where the most senior person should be seated. If the meeting is held around a large conference table, then the guest of honor sits directly opposite the host. Now let‟s start the audience interaction. Q5:What are the most common cultural differences between China and France? (1)France is shown to be an individualist society. Parents make their children emotionally independent rather than considering the groups in which they belong ; The French prefer to be dependent on the central government ; Employees normally pay formal respect and show deference to their boss, but behind his/her back they may do the opposite of what they promised to do ; Customer service is poor in the eyes of all those who believe that the customer is king. (2) China is a highly collectivist culture where people act in the interests of the group and not necessarily of themselves. In-group considerations affect hiring and promotions with closer in-groups (such as family) are getting preferential treatment. Q6. Culturally, what have you found it interesting between China and France since you have been in France? (1)Gift giving is a very delicate issue in China. It is illegal to give gifts to government official however; it has become more commonplace in the business world. (2)Red is a lucky color; pink and yellow represent happiness; and the number 8 is the luckiest number. The colors black, white and blue and the #4, or four of anything, are negatively associated with death or funerals. (3)The gift is offered using both hands and must be gift-wrapped; though it won’t be opened it front of you. It will be set aside and opened later. (4) French people love flowers, their life is full of blossoms.The number of flowers is usually odd, but 13 is forbidden. (5)The French is the hometown of luxury goods, such as champagne, brandy, sugar perfume, they can all be good gifts.In France, some artistic and aesthetic gifts such as music, painting or some books, biography will be very popular.
