Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the centre. You may not use any of the words in the bank more than once. You probably haven't taken the time to think of all the work that went into creating the shirt on your back.I mean, how hard it could be to create fabric and 26 it into a shirt shape.Don't machines do all that?Well, creating fabric from cotton, which is the most 27 clothing material,is actually a processthat involves a lot of water,2,700 liters per shirt to be 28 .Take a look at the video below from National Geographic f or some more mind-blowing 29 about cotton clothing production.Clean water is 30 becoming one of the most sought-after resources in the world.Given how large the 31 and cotton industries are, they take up a lot of our fresh water demands across the world, according to The Huffington Post. The video from National Geographic was created to spread 32 of how environmentally harmful cotton is.But the situation can be made better.Through better water management and farming practices, water usage in cotton production can be cut down by 33 40 percent.Called“Better Cotton”,this environmentally conscious product will save millions of liters of water a year simply from 34 the demands of cotton production.Cotton doesn't have to go,since it is,after all,one of the most useful cash crops across the globe. However,as water supplies 35 ,farmers and consumers need to be more conscious of the effect that these products have on the environment as a whole.Section BDirections: In this section, you are going to read a passage with ten statements attached to it.Each statement contains information given in one of the paragraphs.Identify the paragraph from which the information is derived. You may choose a paragraph more than once. Each paragraph is marked with a letter.Answer the questions by marking the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2.The spoken webA)We're growing more used to chatting to our computers, phones and smart speakers through voiceassistants like Amazon's Alexa,Apple's Siri and Microsoft's Cortana.Blind and partially sighted people have been using text-to-speech converters for decades.B)Out of these assistants,Siri is the most well-known.The assistant uses voice inquiries and a natural-language user interface (界面)to answer questions. The software adapts to users'individuallanguageusages, searches, and preferences, with continuing use.C)Some think voice could soon take over from typing and clicking as the main way to interact online.Butwhat are the challenges of moving to "the spoken web"?D)What use is written online content if you can't read? That is the situation facing illiterate(不识字的)African farmers. They are often denied crucial information the web offers many others. With a literacy rate in some parts of Africa at only 22.6%,farmers are often"underpaid for their produce because they might be unaware of the prevailing prices,"says Francis Dittoh,a researcher behind Mr Meteo,a speech-based weather information service.E)“The most frequently heard complaint is about rainfall predictions,”say s Mr Dittoh, who lives inTamale, northern Ghana. They tell us the methods their forefathers used to predict the weather don't seem to work as well these days."This is down to climate change,he believes.Yet knowingwhen it's going to rain is vital for farmers wanting to sow seeds, irrigate crops or take their animals out to the fields to feed on grass.F) Mr Dittoh says the idea of converting online weather reports into speech came from the farmersthemselves, after a workshop in the village of Guabuligah.“They came up with this,”he says.Mr Meteo takes the online weather forecast, converts it to a short recording in the appropriate language and makes it available on a basic phone.Farmers ring up to receive the information. The local language Dagbani is spoken by 1.2 million people but is not served by any online translation applications. The service was designed to be cheap and easy to run, says Mr Dittoh. He plans to begin field tests this month, working with Tamale's Savanna Agricultural Research Institute.G)The spoken web could also help the one-in-five adults in Europe and the U.S.with poor reading skills. But building the spoken web-web-to-voice and voice-to-web-isn't straightforward. For software to understand pizza is served at Italian restaurants is easy.To cover multiple domains and to be able to have a conversation with users on every single topic is still a long way off.H)So although many computer assistants can answer simple questions about the weather and play musicfor us,anything resembling a wide-ranging human conversation is decades away.Artificial intelligence just isn't smart enough yet.Even turning your voice into text—automatic speech recognition-is one of the hardest problems to solve,as there are as many ways to pronounce things as there are people on the planet.D Siri has often been praised for its ability to interpret our casual language and deliver very specific andaccurate results, sometimes even providing additional information. But it is still somewhat restricted, particularly when the language moves away from stiffer commands into more human interactions. In one example, the phrase “Send a text to Jason,Clint,Sam,and Lee saying we're having dinner at Silver Cloud restaurant”was interpreted as sending a message to Jason only, containing the text"Clint Sam and Lee saying we're having dinner at Silver Cloud restaurant".It has also been noted that Siri lacks a proper editing function,as saying “Edit message to say:we're at Silver Cloud restaurant and you should come find us”generatesClint Sam and Lee saying we're having dinner at Silver Cloud restaurant to say we're at Silver Cloud restaurant and you should come find us".J) Using voice interaction feels far more intimate than surfing the net the old-fashioned way. This is intentional as the informal tone of the assistant helps create an emotional attachment. But if something speaks,it must also listen. Our phones are always near us and they are collecting data about us all the time. This has already raised privacy concerns. The American Civil Liberties Union has stated that digital assistants create a threat to privacy from hackers. Some people have other concerns. They worry assistants will one day be used to deliver advertising directly to us.K)But digital voices need more personality to make them popular.Robots are not yet witty,Siri is boring. The benefits of using voice instead of tapping fingers obviously depend on the context.Doctors completing online forms about their patients by speech, for example, can dictate 150 words a minute, three times faster than typing on a keyboard. This enables them to spend less time on administration and more time with patients.L) Last year, speech recognition company Nuance helped a doctors'surgery in Dukinfield, near Manchester, set up a speech system for the practice's six doctors. Now they can dictate notes on a patient's health condition and treatment and a smart assistant automatically enters the information into the right fields on a web form.Previously, the doctors made voice recordings that were then transcribed by secretaries—a process that was costly and likely to cause delays. The new system means letters to patients now have more detail.。

Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are fourchoices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice andmark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single linethrough the centre.Passage OneQuestions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage. The aim of the teacher is to get his pupils as quickly as possible over the period in which each printed symbol is looked at for its shape, and arrive at the stage when the pupil looks at words and phrases, for their meaning, almost without noticing the shapes of the separate letters. When a good reader is at work he does not look at letters, nor even at words, one by one, however, he quickly takes in the meaning of two, three, or four words at a time, in a single moment. Watch carefully the eyes of a person who is reading, and it will be seen that they do not travel smoothly along the lines of print, but they move by jumps separated by very short stops. The eyes of a very good reader move quickly, taking long jumps and making very short halts (停顿); the eyes of a poor reader move more slowly, taking only short jumps and stopping longer at each halt. Sometimes, when he meets a difficulty, he even goes backwards to see again what has already been looked at once. The teacher’s task is therefore clear: it is to train his pupils to take in several words at a glance (one eye-jump’) and to remove the necessity for going backwards to read something a second time. This shows at once that letter-by-letter, or syllable-by-syllable, or word-by-word reading, with the finger pointing to the word, carefully fixing each one in turn, is wrong. It is wrong because such a method ties the pupil’s eyes down to a very short jump, and the aim is to train for the long jump. Moreover, a very short jump is too short to provide any meaning or sense; and it will be found that having struggled with three or four words separately, the pupil has to look at them again, all together and in one group, in order to get the meaning of the whole phrase.21. Which of the following is closest in meaning to the first paragraph?A) Pupils should be trained to reach quickly the stage of reading without having toconcentrate on the separate symbols.B) Pupils should look at each printed symbol for its meaning as well as for its shape.C) Teachers should help their pupils avoid looking at the shape of the printedsymbols.D) Teachers should tell their pupils the different stages of their study.22. In a single moment, a good reader picks up ________.A) several wordsB) several phrasesC) several sentencesD) several lines23. Teachers encourage the use of dictionaries so that ________.A) students will be able to express their ideas more freelyB) teachers will have less trouble in correcting mistakesC) students will have more confidence in writingD) students will learn to be independent of teachers24. The writer seems to think that the teacher’s judgement on that sensitive piece ofwriting is ________.A) reasonableB) unfairC) foolishD) careless25. The major point discussed in the passage is ________.A) the importance of developing writing skillsB) the complexities of spellingC) the correct way of marking compositionsD) the relationship between spelling and the content of a compositionPassage TwoQuestions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage.A breakthrough (突破) in the provision of energy from the sun for the European Economic Community (EEC) could be brought forward by up to two decades, if a modest increase could be provided in the EEC’s research effort in this field, according to the senior EEC scientists engaged in experiments in solar energy at EEC’s scientific laboratories at Ispra, near Milan. The senior West German scientist in charge of the Community’s solar energy programme, Mr. Joachim Gretz, told journalists that at present levels of research spending it was most unlikely that solar energy would provide as much as three per cent of the Community’s energy requirements even after the year 2000. But he said that with a modest increase in the present< sums, devoted by the EEC to this work it was possible that the breakthrough could be achieved by the end of the next decade.Mr. Gretz calculates that if solar energy only provided three per cent of the EEC’s needs, this could still produce a saving of about a billion pounds in the present bill for imported energy each year. And he believes that with the possibility of utilizing more advanced technology in this field it might be possible to satisfy a much bigger share of the Community’s future energy needs. At present the EEC spends about $2.6 millions a year on solar research at Ispra, one of the EEC’s official joint research centres, and another $3 millions a year in indirect research with universities and other independent bodies.26. The phrase “be brought forward” (Line 2, Para. 1) most probably means ________.A) be expectedB) be completedC) be advancedD) be introduced27. Some scientists believe that a breakthrough in the use of solar energy depends on________.A) sufficient fundingB) further experimentsC) advanced technologyD) well-equipped laboratories28. According to Mr. Gretz, the present sum of money will enable the scientists toprovide ________.A) more than 3 ~, 6 of the EEC’s needs after the year 2000B) only 3% of the EEC’s needs before the year 2000C) less than 3% of the EEC’s needs before the year 2000D) 3% of the EEC’s needs after the year 200029. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?A) The EEC spends one billion pounds on imported energy each year.B) At the present level of research spending, it is difficult to make any significantprogress in the provision of energy from the sun.C) The desired breakthrough could be obtained by the end of the next decade ifinvestment were increased.D) The total yearly spending of the EEC on solar energy research amounted toalmost 6 million.30. The application of advanced technology to research in solar energy ________.A) would lead to a big increase in research fundingB) would make it unnecessary to import oilC) would make it possible to meet the future energy needs of the EECD) would provide a much greater proportion of the Community’s future energyneedsPassage ThreeQuestions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage.Just seven years ago, the Jarvik-7 artificial heart was being cheered as the model of human creativeness. The sight of Barney Clark-alive and conscious after trading his diseased heart for a metal-and-plastic pump-convinced the press, the public and many doctors that the future had arrived. It hadn’t. After monitoring production of the Jarvik-7, and reviewing its effects on the 150 or so patients (most of whom got the device as a temporary measure) the U.S. Food and Drug Administration concluded that the machine was doing more to endanger lives than to save them. Last week the agency cancelled its earlier approval, effectively banning (禁止) the device. The recall may hurt Symbion Inc., maker of the Jarvik-7, but it won’t end the request for an artificial heart. One problem with the banned model is that the tubes connecting it to an external power source created a passage for infection. Inventors are now working on new devices that would be fully placed, along with a tiny power pack, in the patient’s chest. The first sample products aren’t expected for another 10 or 20 years: But some people are already worrying that they’ll work-and that America’s overextended health-care programs will lose a precious $2.5 billion to $5 billion a year providing them for a relatively few dying patients. If such expenditures (开支) cut into funding for more basic care, the net effect could actually be a decline in the nation’s health.31. According to the passage the Jarvik-7 artificial heart proved to be ________.A) a technical failureB) a technical wonderC) a good life-saverD) an effective means to treat heart disease32. From the passage we know that Symbion Inc ________.A) has been banned by the government from producing artificial heartsB) will review the effects of artificial hearts before designing new modelsC) may continue to work on new models of reliable artificial heartsD) can make new models of artificial hearts available on the market in 10 to 20years33. The new models of artificial hearts are expected ________.A) to have a working life of 10 or 20 yearsB) to be set fully in the patient’s chestC) to be equipped with an external power sourceD) to create a new passage for infection34. The word “them” in Line 7, Para. 2 refers to ________.A) doctors who treat heart diseasesB) makers of artificial heartsC) America’s health-care programsD) new models of artificial hearts35. Some people feel that ________.A) artificial hearts are seldom effectiveB) the country should not spend so much money on artificial heartsC) the country is not spending enough money on artificial heartsD) America’s health-care programs are not doing enough for the nation’s healthPassage FourQuestions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage.A raped means of long-distance transportation became a necessity for the United States as settlement (新拓居地) spread ever farther westward. The early trains were impractical curiosities, and for a long time the railroad companies met with troublesome mechanical problems. The most serious ones were the construction of rails able to bear the load, and the development of a safe, effective stopping system. Once these were solved, the railroad was established as the best means of land transportation. By 1860 there were thousands of miles of railroads crossing the eastern mountain ranges and reaching westward to the Mississippi. There were also regional southern and western lines. The high point in railroad building came with the construction of the first transcontinental system. In 1862 Congress authorized two western railroad companies to build lines from Nebraska westward and from California eastward to a meeting point, so as to complete a transcontinental crossing linking the Atlantic seaboard with the Pacific. The Government helped the railroads generously with money and land. Actual work on this project began four years later. The Central Pacific Company, starting from California, used Chinese labor, while the Union Pacific employed crews of Irish laborers. The two groups worked at remarkable speed, each trying to cover a greater distance than the other. In 1869 they met at a place called Promontory in what is now the state of Utah. Many visitors came there for the great occasion. There were joyous celebrations all over the country, with parades and the ringing of church bells to honor the great achievement. The railroad was very important in encouraging westward movement. 2022年6月大学英语四级真题及答案(第一套)一、四级作文部分:WritingDirections: Suppose you are writing a proposal to your school library about improving it' s services, you are writing about its current problems and solutions.Dear Sir or Madam,I hope you are doing great! I am Li Ming, one of the sophomore students in our university. Following my recent experience of using our school library, I have decided to send you some feed-back. In the first place, the librarians there are not very friend-ly and helpful as they often fail to tell us where to find the book we want, and moreover get impatient easily. What’s more, the books available in the library are too old to catch up with the latest development of related disciplines. Finally, the reading rooms are not bright enough as some of the lights have gone dark. All these have brought great inconvenience to us students, which leaves me with no choice but to write you this letter. From my perspective, it would be wise for you to offer all the librarians a training course to familiarize them with the layout of the library and the classifications of the books. If possible, I sincerely hope that you consider the possibility of renewing some of the books and maintaining the facilities properly.Thank you for your time and consideration. Look forward to your favorable reply.Warm regards,Li Ming二、四级听力部分:四级听力原文:Section ANews Report 1原文:[1] A new study finds that beverages containing add ed sugar might be harmfuL In the study, researchers a nalyzed information from over eighty thousand wome n and thirty seven thousand men. 20236月英语四级考试真题及答案全文共6篇示例,供读者参考篇1The Big English Test Adventure!Hi friends! Today I'm going to tell you all about the big English test I had to take last month. It was the English Test for English Majors Band 4 in June 2023. Get ready for an exciting story full of questions, answers, and maybe even some silliness! It all started on a sunny Thursday morning. I woke up, had my favorite cereal (Lucky Marshmallow Stars), and got dressed up in my lucky test-taking outfit - a superhero cape and mask! The test was being held at my university, Bingleborn College. I grabbed my backpack full of pencils, a calculator, and most importantly, my trusty teddy bear Caleb for moral support. When I arrived, there were hundreds of other students already lined up outside the big testing hall. We all had to show our IDs and get wanded by security guards before going inside. The room was huge with lots of little desks and chairs spread out.I found my assigned seat and started looking over the testbooklet they gave us. It had four sections - listening, reading, writing, and translation. Gulp! The first part was the listening section. The nice lady's voice on the recording asked us all sorts of questions about conversations, speeches, and stories. Like "What did Jessica say she was doing this weekend?" and "According to the speaker, which animal has the highest population in Africa?" I had to listen super carefully and fill in the blanks on my answer sheet. After that was the reading section, which was the longest part. There were all kinds of passages to read - news articles, scientific reports, biographies, and more. Each one had multiple choice questions to see how well we understood the main ideas, details, vocabulary words, and the author's intention. It took a lot of brain power! We then had a break for lunch. I chomped down a peanut butter and jelly sandwich while Caleb cheered me on. The writing section was next. We had to write a short essay responding to a prompt about whether schools should have mandatory gym class. I made sure to state my opinion, give reasons and examples, and write a strong conclusion. Finally, it was time for translation! This part had sentences that we needed to translate between English and Chinese in bothdirections. There were some really weird idioms and expressions that made me scratch my head. How do you say "raining cats and dogs" in Chinese? After what felt like ages, the test was finally over! My hand was sore from bubbling in answers and my brain felt like mush. As I turned in my test booklet, the proctor let me take a souvenir pencil. I gave Caleb a high-five and we headed home to take an epic nap. Phew, what a day!A couple weeks later, the scores were posted online. I logged in with my verification code and...I passed! I got a great score and will be able to start my English major classes next semester. All that hard work paid off. The test was really tough, but I'm proud I stuck with it.So there you have it, my big English test adventure! It definitely wasn't easy, but with some preparation and a positive attitude, I made it through. Who knows, maybe you'll have to take this test someday too. Just remember to bring a lucky pencil, get a good night's sleep, and believe in yourself! That's all for now friends. Time for me to go practice making hot cocoa - I heard there might be a beverage tasting section on the next English test! Study hard and thanks for reading!篇2The Big English Test for College in June 2023Hi there friends! Have you heard about the big English test that lots of college students had to take in June 2023? It's called the College English Test Band 4 and it's a super important exam. Let me tell you all about it!The Reading SectionThe reading part had three long passages to read. The first one was about sustainable living and how we can take better care of our planet Earth. There were questions asking what the main ideas were and looking for important details. Then the next reading was a really fascinating story about a famous scientist who made some amazing discoveries about stars and galaxies way out in space. The questions wanted us to understand the key events and identify the traits that made this scientist so successful. The last reading passage described the history of a traditional art form from another country. We had to figure out the sequence of how the art developed over time and analyze the author's perspective on its importance. For all the readings, we needed excellent reading comprehension skills to understand the passages fully and find the correct answers to the questions. It really tested how well we could understand different texts on a variety of subjects. The Listening SectionAfter the readings came the listening part, which was super challenging too! The first listening passage was a lecture about the psychology of learning languages. We heard examples and had to categorize them based on the teaching methods described.Next up was a conversation between students planning a camping trip. This one was tricky because we had to keep track of lots of details like what supplies they wanted to bring, where they hoped to go camping, and how they would split up the costs. The last listening passage was an interview with an entrepreneur who started their own business. We had to summarize the key points and identify the speaker's opinions on what makes a successful startup company.Just like the readings, these listenings covered various topics and required excellent listening skills to catch all the details, main ideas, opinions, and examples given. Having a strong vocabulary and understanding different accents was crucial too.The Writing SectionPhew, then came the writing section! For this part, we had two tasks. The first one gave us a statement about an issue and we had to write a response to it, stating whether we agreed or disagreed and providing our reasons and examples to support our perspective. The second writing task described a situation or scenario, and we had to write a response proposing a solution or recommendation to address the challenges described. Using clear, logical reasoning with relevant examples from our knowledge and experience was vital. Both writing tasks really tested our ability to express ourselves well in written English, organize our ideas coherently, provide solid evidence to back up our claims, and demonstrate a good mastery of vocabulary, grammar, and sentence structure. The Translation SectionFinally, there was a translation part where we had to translate sentences from English into Chinese and vice versa. This really put our bilingual skills and understanding of bothlanguages to the test! We had to pick the most accurate and natural translations for each sentence.Wow, that sure was an epic English exam covering so many different skills! The students who did best likely had a balanced mastery of reading, listening, writing, speaking, and translation abilities in English. Those are the key details I wanted to share about the awesome College English Test Band 4 that happened in June 2023. Preparing well, staying focused, and doing lots of practice must have been so important. I'm super impressed by anyone who could tackle such a comprehensive English proficiency exam! Nice work to all who took it on.Let me know if you have any other questions! Learning about tests and academics is cool but also really makes me appreciate all the hard work students put into their studies.篇3The June 2023 CET-4 Exam Adventure!Hi everyone! My name is Timmy and I'm 10 years old. I didn't take the College English Test Band 4 exam myself, because I'm still in 5th grade. But my older sister Samantha is a sophomore inuniversity, and she just took the CET-4 in June 2023. She told me all about the crazy adventure she had with the exam questions and answers! The listening section was first, like always. Sammy said there were some conversations about daily life situations, like ordering food or asking for directions. She had to listen carefully and choose the right responses. There were also some longer listening passages about topics like science or culture. Sammy struggled a bit with the accent on one of the passages since the speaker was from Scotland. But overall she felt good about the listening part. Then it was time for the reading section, which Sammy said was super hard! There were some longer passages about serious topics like economics and international affairs. The vocabulary was really advanced with lots of big words I've never heard of. Sammy had to read slowly and use her critical thinking skills to analyze the main ideas and details. She told me some of the questions asked her to infer the author's attitude or find evidence to support claims made in the passages. Thank goodness Sammy loves reading and has great focus! The writing section scared Sammy the most before the exam. She's never been a big fan of essay writing. For the CET-4, shehad to write a response to an opinion prompt by stating her views and providing examples to support her stance. The prompt was about whether social media does more harm than good for society. Sammy wrote that while social media enables connection and information sharing, it also promotes things like internet addiction, cyberbullying and the spread of misinformation. She had to plan her ideas carefully and organize her essay with clear paragraphs and transitions. Finally, there was the translation part of the exam. Sammy had to translate sentences from English into Chinese and vice versa. She said some of the sentences used really tricky vocabulary or phrases with multiple meanings. She had to really think through the context and connotations to choose the right translation. Sammy made flashcards to study tons of vocabulary words, but there were still some she didn't know or got mixed up.When the exam was finally over after almost 3 hours, Sammy felt like she had just run a marathon! Her brain was fried from all that reading, writing, listening and translating. She rewarded herself with a big ice cream sundae that night. A few weeks later, Sammy got her score report and was relieved to find out she passed! All that hard work and perseverance paid off.I'm really proud of my big sis for conquering the CET-4 test. It sounds like an epic challenge with all those difficult listening passages, reading comprehension questions, the writing prompt and tricky translations. I can't even imagine taking an exam like that! Sammy studied so hard and kept her focus the whole time. I guess all those late nights of vocabulary flashcards and practice tests were worth it in the end.Now that Sammy has the CET-4 certificate, it will help her apply for better jobs and possibly study abroad opportunities after graduation. Who knows, maybe one day I'll follow in her footsteps and take the CET exam too when I'm older! For now, I'll just keep practicing my English skills and dreaming about future adventures like the CET-4 exam quest. The listening prompts about daily conversations seem pretty easy. But those long reading passages and analytical questions sound crazy difficult! I better start training my brain now if I want to pass that monster of a test someday. Thanks for taking this journey with me to learn about the June 2023 CET-4 questions and answers! Being bilingual is super cool.篇4The Big English Test for College KidsHi there! My name is Xiaoming and I'm 10 years old. I just took a really big English test called the College English Test Band 4. It was super hard but I tried my best! Let me tell you all about it.A few months ago, my English teacher Ms. Wang told our class that we were gonna take this huge test. She said it was really important for getting into a good university later on. I wasn't too worried at first because English is one of my favorite subjects. But then she started giving us tons of practice tests and homework to get ready. Ugh, so much work! Finally, test day arrived on June 17th. We had to be at school super early at 8am. I was pretty nervous but my mom made me a yummy breakfast to pep me up. When I got to the classroom, there were already lots of other kids there looking just as scared as me.The first part of the test was listening comprehension. That's where they play audio clips and you have to answer questions about what you heard. Some of the clips were about daily life topics like shopping or travel. Others were lectures from university professors using all these big fancy words I didn't understand. I had to concentrate so hard! After listening, we moved onto reading comprehension. We got a bunch of different passages to read, including articles, essays, fiction stories and more. The passages were pretty long and had difficult vocabulary. We had to pick out the main ideas, make inferences, and answer specific detail questions. Phew, my brain was getting tired just from all that reading! The writing section was up next. We had to write a short composition of around 200 words. The prompt was "The most influential person in your life." I wrote all about how my grandpa taught me so many life lessons through his funny stories and sayings. Hopefully I organized my ideas well enough. Finally, the translation part arrived. English to Chinese and Chinese to English. Ugh, translation is my worst nightmare! Those idiomatic expressions and phrases are killer. I tried my best but I definitely made some mistakes. After what felt like an eternity, the brutal test was finally over around 12pm. My brain was completely fried. As we filed out, I could hear kids chatting about which questions they thought were hard and comparing answers. I just wanted to go home and take a nap!A couple months later, the scores came out online. I was super nervous to check mine. I logged in with shaky hands...and Ipassed! My total score was 545 which was just above the passing line of 425. Phew, what a relief! While not an amazing score, at least I reached the minimum to be eligible for university admissions.I celebrated by eating a big ice cream sundae. All that hard work paid off in the end! The College English Test 4 was no joke.I have so much more respect now for university students after experiencing what the entrance exams are like. Who knows, maybe I'll become an English teacher like Ms. Wang someday so I can put the next generation through their paces! Just kidding...or am I?Well, that's my tale of the terrifying English test. I'm just glad it's over and I can go back to being a regular kid again for a while. Let me know if you have any other questions! Laters!篇5My Big Sister Took the English Level 4 Exam!Hi everyone! My name is Timmy and I'm 8 years old. I'm going to tell you all about the big English test my older sister Emily took last month. She's 16 and just finished her second year of high school.Every year, there's a huge English exam in our country called the English Level 4 Exam. It's super important for students who want to go to university. My sister has been studying really hard for months to get ready for it. The exam happened on June 3rd this year.A few weeks before, Emily let me look at some practice test materials she was using. There were sections on listening, reading, writing, and translating. For the listening part, you have to listen to recordings and answer questions about what you heard. The reading has long passages and you need to show you understood the main ideas and details. For writing, Emily had to write an essay responding to a prompt. She practiced outlining her essays and organizing them into clear paragraphs with good examples. The translation section looked really hard to me. You have to translate sentences back and forth between English and our native language. On the night before the exam, Emily was revising her vocabulary lists and going over practice tests one last time. She made sure to get a good night's sleep too. The next morning, she left bright and early to get to the test site on time. I wished her good luck! While Emily was taking the exam, I imagined what it must have been like. The listening section probably had things like news reports, lectures, and conversations that she had to listen to carefully and answer comprehension questions. Maybe there were recordings about school life, scientific discoveries, or cultural traditions. For the reading section, I bet there were articles from newspapers, magazines, books, and websites. Emily would have had to read quickly but thoroughly to find the key information to answer the questions correctly. Some passages were probably about current events, others on more academic topics in fields like history, art, and social science.I'm sure the writing prompt gave Emily a controversial opinion statement, and she had to write a well-structured essay giving her perspective with clear reasoning and examples. Good writing on this exam has to be logical, cohesive, and persuasive. No simple agree/disagree, but a nuanced position! As for translation, I can only imagine how mentally exhausting it must have been to go back and forth between languages precisely while dealing with complex sentence structures, different regional dialects, idioms, and cultural concepts. You really have to deeply understand both languages. After what must have been an intense four hours of focusing, my sister finally emerged from the test site. She looked relieved but tired. I gave her a big hug and asked how it went.Emily said, "Phew, that was not easy! The listening had some really challenging situational dialogues that required close attention to tone and context. And the reading passages covered a wide range of topics so I had to draw on my background knowledge in different fields.""What about writing and translation?" I asked. Emily replied, "For the essay prompt, I staked out a reasoned stance using plenty of illustrative examples while acknowledging counterarguments. Staying organized with smooth transitions was important.""And translation? That part scares me the most!" I admitted. Emily laughed and said, "Yeah, that's always grueling. I just took it piece by piece, accounted for idiomatic expressions and cultural nuances, and did my best with the limited time."Weeks later, the exam scores came out and Emily did really well overall! She passed with a great score that will help her university applications. All that hard work definitely paid off for her.I feel proud of my big sister for conquering such a challenging English exam. It makes me motivated to study English diligently when I'm older too. Who knows, maybe one day I'll be the one telling my little sibling about the big exam I went through! For now, I'll just cheer Emily on as she continues preparing for the next steps after high school. There you have it - the inside scoop on my sister's experience with the big English level 4 exam! It sounds incredibly demanding with all those different sections testing different skills. I have a deep respect for how much preparation Emily put in over many months. I'm sure her strong English abilities will open many doors for her future education and career.Let me know if you've ever taken a big standardized test like this one. What did you find most difficult - listening, reading, writing, or translation? I'd love to hear your stories! Thanks for reading about my big sister the English exam all-star. See you next time!篇6The June 2023 English Test - What Happened?!Hi everyone! It's me, Tommy, back again to tell you all about the crazy English test I had to take in June. I'm only 10 years old,but boy was this exam hard! I've been learning English since I was really little though, so I gave it my best shot. The listening part was first, just like always. I had to listen really carefully to some conversations and passages. There was one conversation between two friends deciding what movie to see. The girl wanted to watch a romantic comedy, but the boy wanted an action movie. I think the right answer was that they decided to see the action movie, but I'm not totally sure! Then there was a longer passage about inventions that changed the world. It talked about things like the printing press, the light bulb, and the internet. Some of the vocabulary was pretty tricky, like "revolutionary" and "paradigm shift." I tried my best to understand all the details though. After the listening, we had to do the reading section. This part was no joke! The passages were super long and about all kinds of different topics. One was on environmental science and renewable energy sources. Another one discussed entrepreneurship and starting your own business. I'm just a kid, so a lot of the content was over my head if I'm being honest! The grammar questions were mixed in with the reading, which always trips me up. I had to identify parts of speech, fix sentence errors, and choose the right word form to fill in blanks.Grammar has never been my strong suit in English. I got stuck on this one question asking about the difference between "bring" and "take." My teacher tried to explain it to me, but I still get confused! After we survived the reading/grammar gauntlet, it was finally time for the writing section at the end. Phew! We had to write a short essay responding to a prompt about an important issue facing society today. I chose to write about reducing plastic waste since that seems to be a big problem nowadays. In my essay, I said that we should use fewer plastic bags when shopping and try to recycle more. I also recommended drinking out of reusable water bottles instead of buying new plastic bottles all the time. Reducing plastic waste is important so we can protect the environment and oceans. Hopefully I expressed my thoughts OK!That was pretty much the whole English test in a nutshell. By the end, my brain felt like mush! I just put my pencils down and tried my very hardest. Studying English from such a young age has really paid off though. I'm getting pretty good if I do say so myself. Now, I probably shouldn't share the actual test answers and contents since that's not allowed. But Ican reveal a few keydetails! The listening passage was about the history of the printing press, if you can believe that. And the reading had an article discussing entrepreneurship. See, I told you the topics were super hard! For the writing prompt, it asked what one change we would make to improve our local community. Like I said, I wrote about reducing plastic waste. But you could also write about other community issues like poverty, education, community gardens, or crime. There were lots of possibilities.Well, that's all I've got to report on this crazy English exam! It's not easy being a kid and having to take difficult standardized tests like this. But I'm proud of myself for trying my best and continuing to work on my English abilities. Hopefully I did OK!If you have to take an English test like this soon, study really hard beforehand. Listen to English audio, read lots of books and articles, and practice your grammar skills. It will all pay off, I promise! Just keep a positive mindset and believe in yourself.Tests are rough, but thinking ahead to summer vacation definitely kept me motivated during those grueling hours, let me tell you! Thanks for reading about my wild English exam experience. Until next time!。

A 9-year-old central California boy braved strong currents and cold water to swim from San Francisco to Alcatraz Islandand back. And only a few of them bug humans. Most ants live in the woods, or out in nature. There, they keep other creatures in check, distribute seeds, and clean dead and decaying materials from the ground. A very small percentage of antsdo harm to humans. But those are incredibly challenging to control. They are small enough to easily slipinside your house. Live in colonies that number in the tens of thousands to the hundreds of thousands, and reproduce quickly. That makes them good at getting in, and hard to kick out. Once they settle in, these insects start affecting your home. In addition to barging ants, other species can cause differentkinds of damage. Some, like carpenter ants, can undermine a home structure, while others interfere with the electrical units.Unfortunately, our homes are very attractive to ants, because it provides everything the colony needs to survive, such as food, water, and shelter. So, how can we prevent ants from getting into our homes? Most important of all, avoid giving ants any access to food, particularly sugary food, because ants have a sweet tooth. Wealso need to clean up spills as soon as they occur, and store food in air-tight containers. Even garbage attracts ants, so empty your trash as often as possible. Each statement contains information given in one of the paragraphs. Identify the paragraph from which the information is derived. You may choose a paragraph more than once. Each paragraph is marked with a letter. Answer the questions by marking the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2.Resilience Is About How You Recharge, Not How You Endure[A] As constant travelers and parents of a 2-year-old, we sometimes fantasize about how much work we can do when one of us gets on a plane, undistracted by phones, friends, or movies. We race to get all our ground work done: packing, going through security, doing a last-minute work call, calling each other, then boarding the plane. Then, when we try to have that amazing work session in flight, we get nothing done. Even worse, after refreshing our email or reading the same studies over and over, we are too exhausted when we land to soldier on with 〔续处理〕the emails that have inevitably still piledup.[B] Whyshould flying deplete us? We re just sitting there doing nothing. Whycan' t we be tougher, more resilient 〔有复原力的〕and determined in our work so we can accomplish all of the goals we set for ourselves? Based on our current research, we have come to realize that the problem is not our hectic schedule or the plane travel itself; the problem comes from a misconception of what it means to be resilient, and the resulting impact of overworking.[C] We often take a militaristic, “tough" approach to resilience and determination like a Marinepulling himself through the mud, a boxer going one more round, or a football player picking himself up off the ground for one more play. We believe that the longer we tough it out, the tougher we are, and therefore the more successful we will be. However, this entire conception is scientifically inaccurate.[D] The very lack of a recovery period is dramatically holding back our collective ability to be resilient and successful. Research has found that there is a direct correlation between lack of recoveryand increased incidence of health and safety problems. And lack of recovery —whether by disrupting sleep with thoughts of work or having continuous cognitive arousal by watching our phones —is costing our companies $62 billion a year in lost productivity.[E] And just because work stops, it doesn ' t mean we are recovering. We “stop" work sometimes a t5pm, but then we spend the night wrestling with solutions to work problems, talking about our work over dinner, and falling asleep thinking about how much work we ' ll do tomorrow. In a study just released, researchers from Norway found that % of Norwegians have become workaholics〔工作狂〕.The scientists citea definition of “workaholism " as "being overly concerned about work, driven by an uncontrollable work motivation, and invest ing so much time and effort in work that it impairs other important life areas. 〞[F] We believe that the number of people who fit that definition includes the majority of American workers, which prompted us to begin a study of workaholism in the . Our study will use a large corporate dataset from a major medical company to examine how technology extends our working hours and thus interferes with necessary cognitive recovery, resulting in huge health care costs and turnover costs for employers.[G] The misconception of resilience is often bred from an early age. Parents trying to teach their children resilience might celebrate a high school student staying up until 3am to finish a science fair project. What a distortion of resilience! A resilient child is a well-rested one. Whenan exhausted student goes to school, he risks hurting every one on the road with his impaired driving; he doesn ' t have thecognitive resources to do well on his English test; he has lower self-control with his friends; and at home, he is moody with his parents. Overwork and exhaustion are the opposite of resilience and the bad habits we acquire when we ' re young onlymagnify when we hit the workforce.[H] As Jim Loehr and Tony Schwartz have written, if you have too much time in the performance zone, you need more time in the recovery zone, otherwise you risk burnout. Gathering your resources to "try hard" requires burning energy in order to overcome your currently low arousal level. It also worsens exhaustion. Thus the more imbalanced we become due to overworking, the more value there is in activities that allow us to return to a state of balance. The value of a recovery period rises in proportion to the amount of work required of us.[I] So how do we recover and build resilience? Most people assume that if you stop doing a task like answering emails or writing a paper, your brain will naturally recover, so that when you start again later in the day or the next morning, you ' ll have your energy back. But surely everyone reading thishas had times when you lie in bed for hours, unable to fall asleep because your brain is thinking about work. If you lie in bed for eight hours, you may have rested, but you can still feel exhausted the next day. That ' s because rest and recovery are not the same thing.[J] If you ' re trying to build resilience at work, you need adequate interna l and external recovery periods. As researchers Zijlstra, Cropley and Rydstedt write in their 2021 paper: a Internal recoveryrefers to the shorter periods of relaxation that take place within the frames of the work day or the work setting in the form of short scheduled or unscheduled breaks, by shifting attention or changing to other work tasks when the mental or physical resources required for the initial task are temporarily depleted or exhausted. External recovery refers to actions that take place outside of work -. in thefree time between the work days, and during weekends, holidays or vacations. " If after work you liearound on your bed and get irritated by political commentary on your phone or get stressed thinking about decisions about how to renovate your home, your brain has not received a break from high mental arousal states. Our brains need a rest as much as our bodies do.[K] If you really want to build resilience, you can start by strategically stopping. Give yourself the resources to be tough by creating internal and external recovery periods. Amy Blankson describes how to strategically stop during the day by using technology to control overworking. She suggests downloading the Instant or Moment apps to see how many times you turn on your phone each day. You can also use apps like Offtime or Unplugged to create tech free zones by strategically scheduling automaticairplane modes. The average person turns on their phone 150 times every day. If every distraction took only 1 minute, that would account for hours a day.[L] In addition, you can take a cognitive break every 90 minutes to charge your batteries. Try to not have lunch at your desk, but instead spend time outside or with your friends —not talking about work. Take all of your paid time off, which not only gives you recovery periods, but raises your productivity and likelihood of promotion.[M] As for us, we ' ve started using our plane time as a work -free zone, and thus time to dip intothe recovery phase. The results have been fantastic. We are usually tired already by the time we geton a plane, and the crowded space and unstable internet connection make work more challenging. Now, instead of swimming upstream, we relax, sleep, watch movies, or listen to music. And when we get off the plane, instead of being depleted, we feel recovered and ready to return to the performance zone.36. It has been found that inadequate recovery often leads to poor health and accidents.37. Mental relaxation is much needed, just as physical relaxation is.38. Just because they can’t sing opera or ride a bicycle doesn’t mean that animals don’t have culture. There’s no better example of this than killer whales. As one of the most __26__ predators(食肉动物),killer whales may not fit the __27__ of a cultured creature. However, these beasts of the sea do display a vast range of highly __28__ behaviors that appear to be driving their genetic development. The word “culture” comes from the Latin “colere,” which __29__ means “to cultivate.” In other words, it refers to anything that is __30__ or learnt, rather than instinctive or natural. Among human populations, culture not only affects the way we live, but also writes itself into our genes, affecting who we are. For instance, having spent many generations hunting the fat marine mammals of the Arctic, the Eskimos of Greenland have developed certain genetic __31__ that help them digest and utilize this fat-rich diet, thereby allowing them to __32__ in their cold climate. Like humans, killer whales have colonized a range of different __33__ across the globe, occupying every ocean basin on the planet, with an empire that __34__ from pole to pole. As such, different populations of killer whales have had to learn different hunting techniques in order to gain the upper hand over their local prey(猎物). This, in turn, has a major effect on their diet, leading scientists to __35__ that the ability to learn population-specific hunting methods could be driving the animals’ genetic development.

Living with parents edges out other living arrangements for 18- to 34- year-olds
[A] Broad demographic (人口的)shifts is marital status, educational attainment and employment have transformed the way young adults in the . are living, and a new Pew Research Center analysis highlights the implications of these changes for the most basic element of their lives—where they call home. In 2014,for the first time in more than 130 years, adults ages 18 to 34 were slightly more likely to be living in their parents’ home than they were to be living with a spouse or partner in their own household. [B] This turn of events is fueled primarily by the dramatic drop in the share of young Americans who are choosing to settle down romantically before age 35. Dating back to 1880, the most common living arrangement among young adults has been living with a romantic partner, whether a spouse or a significant other. This type of arrangement peaked around 1960, when 62% of the nation’s 18-to 34-year-olds were living with a spouse or partner in their own household, and only one-in-five were living with their parents.
