All we really know is that men, unlike animals, somehow invented certain sounds to express thoughts and feelings, actions and things, so that they could communicate with each other;and that later they agreed upon certain signs, called letters, which could be combined to represent those sounds, and which could be written down. Those sounds, whether spoken, or written in letters we call words. The power of words, then, lies in their combinations-the things they bring up before our minds. Words become filled with meaning for us by experience; and the longer we live, the more certain words recall to us the glad and sad events of our past; and the more we read and learn, the more the number of words that mean something to us increases.Great writers are those who not only have great thoughts, but also express these thoughts in words which appeal powerfully to our minds and feelings. This charming and telling use of words is what we call literary(文字的) style. Above all, the real poet is a master of words. He can convey his meaning in words which sing like music, and which by their position and association can move men to tears. We should thereforelearn to choose our words carefully and use them accurately, or they will make our speech silly and rode.第21题The origin of language______A.is reflected in sounds and lettersB.is handed down from generation to generationC.dates back to the prehistoric periodD.is a problem not yet solved答案:第22题According to the passage, words are______A.visual lettersB.represented by soundsC.represented either by sounds or lettersD.signs called letters答案:第23题The power of words lies in their______A.beautyB.accuracybinationsD.charm答案:第24题The secret of a writer' s success is the use of words that______A.recall to us the glad and sad events of our pastB.are arranged in a creative wayC.are as beautiful as musicD.agree with certain literary style答案:第25题The author of the passage advises us______A.to use words carefully and accuratelyB.not to use silly and rude wordsC.to become a slave of wordsD.to use emotional words答案:根据下面资料,回答下面试题There was one thought that air pollution affected only the area immediately around large cities with factories and heavy automobile traffic. At present, we realize that although these are the areas with the worst air pollution, the problem is literally worldwide. On several occasions over the past decade, a heavy cloud of air pollution has covered the east of the United States and brought health warnings in rural areas away from any major concentration of manufacturing and automobile traffic. In fact, the very climate of the entire earth may be infected by air pollution. Some scientists burning of fossil fuels( coal and oil) is creating a "greenhouse effect"-conserving heat reflected from the earth and raising the world' s average temperature. If this view is correct and the world' s temperature is raised only a few degrees, much of the polar ice cap will melt and cities such as New York, Boston, Miami, and New Orleans will be in water.Another view, less widely held, is that increasing particular matter in the atmosphere is blocking sunlight and lowering the earth' s temperature-a result that would be equally disastrous. A drop of just afew degrees could create something close to a new ice age, and would make agriculture difficult or impossible in many of our top fanning areas. Today we do not know for sure that either of these conditions will happen (though one recent government report drafted by experts in the field concluded that the greenhouse effect is very possible). Perhaps, if we are lucky enough, the two tendencies will offset each other and the world' s temperature will stay about the same as it is now.第26题As pointed out at the beginning of the passage, people used to think that air pollution______A.caused widespread damage in the countrysideB.affected the entire eastern half of the United StatesC.had damaging effect on healthD.existed merely in urban and industries areas答案:第27题As to the greenhouse effect, the author______A.shares the same view with the scientistsB.is uncertain of its occurrenceC.rejects it as being ungroundedD.thinks that it will destroy the world soon答案:第28题The word "offset" in the second paragraph could be replaced by______A.slip intoB.make up forC.set upD.catch up with答案:第29题It can be concluded that______A.raising the world' s temperature only a few degrees would not do much harm to life on earthB.lowering the world' s temperature merely a few degrees would lead many major farming areas to disasterC.almost no temperature variations have occurred over the past decadeD.the world' s temperature will remain constant in the years to come答案:第30题This passage is primarily about______A.the greenhouse effectB.the burning of fossil fuelsC.the potential effect of air pollutionD.the likelihood of a new ice age答案:根据下面资料,回答下面试题Increasingly, over the past ten years, people-especially young people-have become aware of the need to change their eating habits, because much of the food they eat, particularly processed food, is not good for the health. Consequently, there has been a growing interest in natural foods.Foods which do not contain chemical additives (添加剂)and which have not been affected by chemical fertilizers, widely used in farming today.Natural foods, for example, are vegetables, fruit and grain which have been grown in soil that is rich in organic(有机的) matter. In simple terms, this means that the soil has been nourished by unused vegetable matter, which provides it with essential vitamins and minerals. This in itself is a natural process compared with the use of chemicals and fertilizers, the main purpose of which is to increase the amount-but not the quality-of foods grown in commercial farming areas.Natural foods also include animals which have been allowed to feed and move freely in healthy pastures(牧场). Compare this with what happens in the mass production of poultry: there are farms, for example, where thousands of chickens live crowded together in one building and are fed on food which is little better than rubbish. Chickens kept in this way are not only tasteless as food, they also lay eggs which lack important vitamins. There are other aspects of healthy eating which are now receiving increasing attention from experts on diet. Take, for example, the question of sugar. This is actually a non-essential food! Although a natural alternative, such as honey, can be used to sweeten food if it is necessary, we canin fact do without it. It is not that sugar is harmful in itself. But it doesseem to be addictive: the quantity we use has grown steadily over the last two centuries and in Britain today each person consumes an average of 200 pounds a year! Yet all it does is to provide us with energy, in the form of calories. There are no vitamins in it, no minerals and no fiber. It is significant that nowadays fiber is considered to be an important part of a healthy diet. In white bread, for example, the fiber has been removed. But it is present in unrefined flour and of course in vegetables. It is interesting to note that in countries where the national diet contains large quantities of unrefined flour and vegetables, certain diseases are comparatively rare. Hence the emphasis is placed on the eating of whole meal bread and more vegetables by modem experts on"healthy eating".第31题People have become more interested in natural foods because______A.they are more health consciousB.they want to taste all kinds of foodsC.natural foods are more delicious than processed foodsD.they want to return to nature答案:第32题Soil that is rich in organic matters______A.has had chemicals and fertilizers added to itB.contains vegetable matter that has not been consumedC.has been nourished by fertilizersD.already contains large quantities of vitamins and minerals答案:第33题Chickens raised in poultry farms are all of the following EXCEPT that______A.they are fed on food which is little better than garbageB.they live in very crowded conditionC.the eggs they lay lack vitaminsD.they are allowed to move about and eat freely答案:第34题According to the passage,______A.people need sugar to give them energyB.sugar is bad for the healthC.the use of sugar is habit formingD.sugar only sweetens food, but provides us with nothing useful答案:第35题The best title for this passage is______A.People' s Growing Interest in Natural FoodsB.Natural Foods and Healthy DietC.Harmful Effects of SugarD.The Importance of Fiber in Foods答案:根据下面资料,回答下面试题No one knows how man learned to make words. Perhaps he beganby making sounds likethose made by animals. Perhaps he grunted like a pig when he lifted something heavy. Perhaps he made sounds like those he heard all round him-water splashing, bees humming, a stone falling to the ground. Somehow he learned to make words. As the centuries went by, he made more and more new words. This is what we mean by language.People living in different countries made different kinds of words. Today there are about fifteen hundred different languages in the world. Each contains many thousands of words. A very large English dictionary, for example, contains four or five hundred thousand words. But we do not need all these. Only a few thousand words are used in everyday life. The words you know are called your vocabulary. You should try to make your vocabulary bigger. Read as many books as you can.
