Writing Samples I Chart Writing 1 Film Is Giving Way to TV Sample 1-a Film is giving way to TV. According to an investigation made on the number of film-goers and TV-watchers in a ten-year period (1975-1985), we can see that, at the end of 1985, the number of film-goers declined sharply to about 15 thousand which is only some 20 percent of that in 1975. This decline, no doubt, is due to the steadily increasing number of TV-watchers in the same decade. This, I think, indicates the changing pace in our society. Nowadays, people prefer TV to film largely because they have less chance than their older generation to spend two or three hours in a cinema. They prefer a kind of entertainment which is freer, less time-consuming and thus more efficient. TV meets their need perfectly. This is at least partly what contributes to the boom of TV in our generation. Nevertheless, there are still a number of film-fans nowadays. They claim that as a classical art, film is far more enjoyable than TV. Some of them also want to recall the life of the “good old days”. All in all, film is still a charming kind of art as it used to be.

Sample 1-b The change in the number of film-goers and TV-watchers in a certain city shows that film is giving way to TV. In 1975, there were about 85,000 film-goers and about 5,000 TV-watchers. After that the film-goers’ number reduced while the TV-watchers increased. And there were as many TV-watchers as film-goers in 1980. Later, the change continued, until there were more than 100,000 TV-watchers and only more than 10,000 film-goers in 1985. There are many factors which have caused such a change. More and more people like watching TV because it is more convenient and cheaper than going to the cinema. So more and more people become TV-watchers. However, there are still a number of people who enjoy seeing films, because the visual and audio effects of films are much better. 用和较好的词语有:while(第一段第三句),as many …as(第一段第四句),enjoy seeing 和the visual and audio effects(第三段)。

Chart Writing 2 Car Accident Declining in Walton City Sample 1-a Last year, the number of car accidents was 39 in August. After August the rate was constantly declining, until it reached the lowest 16 by the end of the year. The first two months of 1990 showed an increasing trend, and rose to 32 in March, and then fell to 26 in June. The highest figure in August was due to weather factors. Humidity and high temperature make drivers impatient, which easily leads to car accidents. The highest figure in the first half of 1990 was also caused by weather conditions. In Walton city, the excessive rain comes in early spring. The rain makes the roads muddy, and often results in car accidents. This year the pattern is expected to alter. The City government has raised money to improve the road conditions. Two new roads were finished at the end of last year, and are expected to open to traffic soon. New road regulations require that in summer all cars should be air-conditioned. With all these precautions, I’m confident the number of car accidents will be much lower this year.

Sample 1-b From the graph, which shows the number of car accidents in 1990, we can learn that the number of car accidents declined in Walton City in 1990. In January, there were 22 car accidents. The number kept increasing until March, in which 32 car accidents happened. Then the number went down. In June, there were only 26 accidents. But in August the number reached the year’s peak, when 39 accidents occurred. Fortunately, from then on the number kept on decreasing, and in the last month of 1990 only 16 accidents took place. The reason for the decrease of car accidents in the city is that the traffic condition has improved. More and more highways have been built. Narrow streets now can scarcely be seen. There are no more traffic jams. Car drivers are better trained. By the rise and fall rate that the graph indicates, I predict that in 1991 the number of car accidents will continue to decline. There will be less car accidents. But in August the number of car accidents will again go up, because in August there will be a lot of people on holiday and they will drive.

Almost everywhere, in the street, in the schools, at work, or at a meal, people are found playing computer games. They are so addicted to the games that it seems as if they could hardly live without playing them. People become worried: What shall we do with these addicts? Undoubtedly, computer games are a result of scientific advances. When the computer takes over numerous tasks that people used to do, it is also found useful in people’s non-work time. The computer games help people to relax after hard work because people can find something new, interesting and stimulating to play with. Children especially like them because being the only child in the family, they have no one to play with. It is also said that to play computer games can improve a person’s reaction speed of the brain and the flexibility of the fingers. However, sitting in front of the TV screen for too long a time can do great harm to both the eye and body. In addition, the tension and concentration will do one player no good to his nervous system. Moreover, addiction to computer games affects people’s health, work, and studies. Some students failed to pass the exams because of the excessive playing of computer games. Therefore, we should make use of the advantages of computer games, play them at a proper time and for a limited time. This helps people to recover from the fatigue of a day’s work or study. Meanwhile, those computer addicts should be reminded and warned from time to time so that proper metal and physical conditions can be maintained and work and play be guaranteed.
