Received2005;accepted2005AbstractTherecentlystartedAreciboL-bandFeedArray(ALFA)pulsarsurveyaimstofind∼1000newpulsars.Duetoitshightimeandfrequencyresolutionthesurveyisespeciallysensitivetomillisecondpulsars,whichhavethepotentialtotestgravitationaltheories,detectgravitationalwavesandprobetheneutron-starequationofstate.Herewereporttheresultsofourpreliminaryanalysis:inthefirstmonthswehavediscovered21newpulsars.Oneofthese,PSRJ1906+0746,isayoung144-mspulsarinahighlyrelativistic3.98-hrlow-eccentricityorbit.The2.61±0.02M⊙systemisexpectedtocoalescein∼300Myrandcontributessignificantlytothecomputedcosmicinspiralrateofcompactbinarysystems.

1INTRODUCTIONRadiopulsarscontinuetoprovideuniqueopportunitiesfortestingtheoriesofgravityandprobingstatesofmatterotherwiseinaccessible(Stairs2003),andinlargesamplestheyal-lowdetailedmodelingoftheGalacticneutronstarpopulation(Bhattacharyaetal.1992;Arzoumanianetal.2002).Forthesereasons,wehaveinitiatedalarge-scalepulsarsurvey(Cordesetal.2005,here-afterPaperI)thataimstodiscoverpulsarsinshort-periodrelativisticorbitstotestgravi-tationaltheoriesinthestrong-fieldregime,andmillisecondpulsars(MSPs)withultrastablespinratesthatcanbeusedasdetectorsoflong-period(>years)gravitationalwaves(e.g.Lommen&Backer2001).Furthermore,long-period(P>5s)andstronglymagnetisedpulsars2vanLeeuwenetal.Fig.1ContoursoftheALFAtelescopegain.Levelsareat–1,–2,–3,–6,–9,–12,–15and–19dBfromthecentralpeak.Theequivalentcircularbeamwidth(FWHM),averagedoverallbeams,is3.35arcminat1.42GHz.Theon-axisgainisapprox-imately10.4KJy−1forthecentralbeamand∼8.2KJy−1fortheothersixbeams.ThesystemtemperaturelookingoutoftheGalacticplaneis∼24K.(PaperI;Heiles2004).

mayclarifytheconnectionwithmagnetars,andthenatureoftheelusiveradioemissionmech-anism.Additionally,determiningthepulsarvelocitydistributionwillhelpconstrainaspectsoftheformationofneutronstarsincore-collapsesupernovae(e.g.Willemsetal.2004).Thenewsurveyisenabledbyseveralinnovations.FirstistheAreciboL-bandFeedArray(ALFA),aseven-beamfeedandreceiversystemdesignedforlarge-scalesurveysinthe1.2–1.5GHzband.The1.4GHzoperatingfrequencyofALFAisparticularlywellsuitedforpul-sarsearchingoftheGalacticplane.Lowerfrequenciessufferthedeleteriouseffectsofpulsebroadeningfrominterstellarscatteringanddispersion,whilepulsarfluxdensitiestypicallyaremuchreducedathigherfrequencies.TheALFAfrontendissimilartothe13-beamsystemusedfortheextremelyprolificParkesmultibeam(PMB)pulsarsurveyoftheGalacticplane(Manchesteretal.2001).OursurveywillcomplementthePMBsurveyinitsskycoverage.Second,ourinitialandnext-generationspectrometersystemshavemuchfinerresolutioninbothtimeandfrequencythanthespectrometerusedwiththePMB,increasingthedetectionvolumeofMSPsbyanorderofmagnitude.Additionally,thesensitivityoftheArecibotele-scopeallowsforshortpointingsthatsimplifythedetectionofbinarypulsarsundergoingstrongacceleration.Thissensitivityforrelativisticbinariesisillustratedbyourdiscoveryofthelatestbi-narysystemPSRJ1906+0746(Lorimeretal.2006,hereafterPaperII).SincebinarieslikePSRJ1906+0746willcoalesceduetogravitationalwaveemissionwellwithinaHubbletime,theirmergerrate(e.g.Phinney1991;Kimetal.2004)isofgreatinteresttothegravita-tionalwavedetectorcommunityaspotentialsourcesforcurrentinterferometerssuchasLIGO(Abramovicietal.1992).FollowingabriefdescriptionoftheALFAsurveysetupin§2wedescribegeneralsurveyresultsin§3andourdiscoveryofyoung,highlyrelativisticbinarypulsarPSRJ1906+0746in§4.Weconcludein§5,andoutlineourplansforthefuture.

2THEALFAPULSARSURVEYTheALFAsystemsitsintheGregorianfocusoftheArecibotelescopeandprovidesseven3-arcmin8−10KJy−1beamsonthesky(Figure1).Withinayear,newpolyphase-filterspec-trometerswillprocessthefull300MHzbandwidthwith1024spectralchannels.Currently
