Theories 大21 家on the individual suggest that children engage in criminal behavior大22 家they were not sufficiently penalized for previous misdeeds or that they have learned criminal behavior through 大23 家with others. Theories focusing on the role of society suggest that children commit crimes in 大24 家to their failure to rise above theirsocioeconomic status, 大25 家as a rejection of middle-class values. Most theories of juvenile delinquency have focused on children from disadvantaged families,大26 家the fact that children from wealthy homes also commit crimes. (40 points)Text 1Hunting for a job late last year, lawyer Gant Redmon stumbled across CareerBuilder, a job database on the Internet. He searched it with no success but was attracted by the site’s “personal sear ch agent.” It’s an interactive feature that lets visitors key in job criteriasuch as location, title, and salary, then E-mails them when a matching position is posted inthe database. Redmon chose the keywords legal, intellectual property, and Washington, D.C. Threeweeks later, he got his first notification of an opening. “I struck gold,” says Redmon, whoE-mailed his resume to the employer and won a position as in-house counsel for a company. With thousands of career-related sites on the Internet, finding promising openings can betime-consuming and inefficient. Search agents reduce the need for repeated visits to the databases. But although a search agent worked for Redmon, career experts see drawbacks. Narrowing your criteria, for example, may work agai nst you: “Every time you answer a question you eliminate a possibility.” says one expert. For any job search, you should start with a narrow concept—what you think you want to do-- then broaden it. “None of these programs do that,” says another expert. “There’s no career counseling implicit in all of this.” Instead, the best strategy is to use the agent as a kindof tip service to keep abreast of jobs in a particular database; when you get E-mail, consider1732004 年全国硕士研究生入学统一考试英语试题64it a reminder to check the database again. “I would not rely on agents for finding everythingthat is added to a database that might interest me,” says the author of a job-searching guide. Some sites design their agents to tempt job hunters to return. When CareerSite’s age ntsends out messages to those who have signed up for its service, for example, it includes only three potential jobs -- those it considers the best matches. There may be more matches in the database; job hunters will have to visit the site again to find them -- and they do. “On theday after we send our messages, we see a sharp increase in our traffic,” says Seth Peets, vice president of marketing for CareerSite.Even those who aren’t hunting for jobs may find search agents worthwhile. Some use themto keep a close watch on the demand for their line of work or gather information on compensationto arm themselves when negotiating for a raise. Although happily employed, Redmon maintains his agent at CareerBuilder. “You always keep your eyes open,” he says. W orking with a personal search agent means having another set of eyes looking out for you.41. How did Redmon find his job?[A] By searching openings in a job database.[B] By posting a matching position in a database.[C] By using a special service of a database.[D] By E-mailing his resume to a database.42. Which of the following can be a disadvantage of search agents?[A] Lack of counseling.[B] Limited number of visits.[C] Lower efficiency.[D] Fewer successful matches.43. The expression “tip service” (Line 4, Paragraph 3) most probably means ________.[A] advisory[B] compensation[C] interaction[D] reminder44. Why does CareerSite’s agent offer each job hunter only three job options?[A] To focus on better job matches.[B] To attract more returning visits.[C] To reserve space for more messages.[D] To increase the rate of success.45. Which of the following is true according to the text?[A] Personal search agents are indispensable to job-hunters.[B] Some sites keep E-mailing job seekers to trace their demands.[C] Personal search agents are also helpful to those already employed.[D] Some agents stop sending information to people once they are employed.1742004 年全国硕士研究生入学统一考试英语试题65Text 2Over the past century, all kinds of unfairness and discrimination have been condemned or made illegal. But one insidious form continues to thrive: alphabetism. This, for those as yet unaware of such a disadvantage, refers to discrimination against those whose surnames begin with a letter in the lower half of the alphabet. It has long been known that a taxi firm called AAAA cars has a big advantage over Zodiaccars when customers thumb through their phone directories. Less well known is the advantage that Adam Abbott has in life over Zoë Zysman. English names are fairly evenly spread betweenthe halves of the alphabet. Yet a suspiciously large number of top people have surnames beginningwith letters between A and K.Thus the American president and vice-president have surnames starting with B and Cres pectively; and 26 of George Bush’s predecessors (including his father) had surnames in the first half of the alphabet against just 16 in the second half. Even more striking, six of theseven heads of government of the G7 rich countries are alphabetically advantaged (Berlusconi, Blair, Bush, Chirac, Chrétien and Koizumi). The world’s three top central bankers (Greenspan, Duisenberg and Hayami) are all close to the top of the alphabet, even if one of them reallyuses Japanese characters. As are the world’s five richest men (Gates, Buffett, Allen, Ellisonand Albrecht). Can this merely be coincidence? One theory, dreamt up in all the spare time enjoyed by the alphabetically disadvantaged, is that the rot sets in early. At the start of the first yearin infant school, teachers seat pupils alphabetically from the front, to make it easier to remember their names. So short-sighted Zysman junior gets stuck in the back row, and is rarely asked the improving questions posed by those insensitive teachers. At the time the alphabetically disadvantaged may think they have had a lucky escape. Yet the result may be worsequalifications, because they get less individual attention, as well as less confidence inspeaking publicly. The humiliation continues. At university graduation ceremonies, the ABCs proudly get their awards first; by the time they reach the Zysmans most people are literally having a ZZZ. Shortlists for job interviews, election ballot papers, lists of conference speakers and attendees: all tend to be drawn up alphabetically, and their recipients lose interest as they plough through them.46. What does the author intend to illustrate with AAA A cars and Zodiac cars?[A] A kind of overlooked inequality.[B] A type of conspicuous bias.[C] A type of personal prejudice.[D] A kind of brand discrimination.47. What can we infer from the first three paragraphs?[A] In both East and West, names are essential to success.[B] The alphabet is to blame for the failure of Zoë Zysman.[C] Customers often pay a lot of attention to companies’ names.[D] Some form of discrimination is too subtle to recognize.48. The 4th paragraph suggests that ________.1752004 年全国硕士研究生入学统一考试英语试题66[A] questions are often put to the more intelligent students[B] alphabetically disadvantaged students often escape from class[C] teachers should pay attention to all of their students[D] students should be seated according to their eyesight49. What does the author mean by “most people are literally having a ZZZ” (Lines 2-3, Paragraph5)?[A] They are getting impatient.[B] They are noisily dozing off.[C] They are feeling humiliated.[D] They are busy with word puzzles.50. Which of the following is true according to the text?[A] People with surnames beginning with N to Z are often ill-treated.[B] VIPs in the Western world gain a great deal from alphabetism.[C] The campaign to eliminate alphabetism still has a long way to go.[D] Putting things alphabetically may lead to unintentional bias.Text 3When it comes to the slowing economy, Ellen Spero isn’t biting her nails just yet. Butthe 47-year-old manicurist isn’t cutting, filling or polishing as many nails as she’d liketo, either. Most of her clients spend $12 to $50 weekly, but last month two longtime customers suddenly stopped showing up. Spero blames the softening economy. “I’m a good economic indicator,” she says. “I provide a service that people can do without when they’re concerned about saving some dollars.” So Spero is downscaling, shopping at middle-brow Dillard’s department store near her suburban Cleveland home, instead of Neiman Marcus. “I don’t know if other clients are going to abandon me, too.” she says.Even before Alan Greenspa n’s admission that America’s red-hot economy is cooling, lotsof working folks had already seen signs of the slowdown themselves. From car dealerships to Gap outlets, sales have been lagging for months as shoppers temper their spending. For retailers, who last year took in 24 percent of their revenue between Thanksgiving and Christmas, the cautious approach is coming at a crucial time. Already, experts say, holiday sales are off 7 percent from last year’s pace. But don’t sound any alarms just yet. Consumers seem only mildly concerned, not panicked, and many say they remain optimistic about the economy’s long-term prospects, even as they do some modest belt-tightening.Consumers say they’re not in despair because, despite the dreadful headlines, their own fortunes still feel pretty good. Home prices are holding steady in most regions. In Manhattan, “there’s a new gold rush happening in the $4 million to $10 million range, predominantly fedby Wall Street bonuses,” says broker Barbara Corcoran. In San Francisco, prices are still rising even as frenzied overbidding quiets. “Instead of 20 to 30 offers, now maybe you only get twoor three,” says John Tealdi, a Bay Area real-estate broker. And most folks still feel pretty comfortable about their ability to find and keep a job. Many folks see silver linings to this slowdown. Potential home buyers would cheer for lower interest rates. Employers wouldn’t mind a little fewer bubbles inthe job market. Many consumers seem to have been influenced by stock-market swings, which investors now view as a necessary 1762004 年全国硕士研究生入学统一考试英语试题67ingredient to a sustained boom. Diners might see an upside, too. Getting a table at Manhattan’s hot new Alain Ducasse restaurant used to be impossible. Not anymore. For that, Greenspan & Co. may still be worth toasting.51. By “Ellen Spero isn’t biting her nails just yet” (Lines 1-2, Paragraph 1), the authormeans ________.[A] Spero can hardly maintain her business[B] Spero is too much engaged in her work[C] Spero has grown out of her bad habit[D] Spero is not in a desperate situation52. How do the public feel about the current economic situation?[A] Optimistic.[B] Confused.[C] Carefree.[D] Panicked.53. When mentioning “the $4 million to $10 million range” (Lines 3-4, Paragraph 3) the authoris talking about ________.[A] gold market[B] real estate[C] stock exchange[D] venture investment54. Why can many people see “silver linings” to the economic slowdown?[A] They would benefit in certain ways.[B] The stock market shows signs of recovery.[C] Such a slowdown usually precedes a boom.[D] The purchasing power would be enhanced.55. To which of the following is the author likely to agree?[A] A new boom, on the horizon.[B] Tighten the belt, the single remedy.[C] Caution all right, panic not.[D] The more ventures, the more chances.Text 4Americans today don’t place a very high value on intellect. Our heroes are athletes, entertainers, and entrepreneurs, not scholars. Even our schools are where we send our children to get a practical education -- not to pursue knowledge for the sake of knowledge. Symptoms of pervasive anti-intellectualism in our schools aren’t difficult to find.“Schools have always been in a society where practical is more important than intellectual,” says education writer Diane Ravitch. “Schools could be a counterbalance.”1772004 年全国硕士研究生入学统一考试英语试题68Ravitch’s latest book, Left Back: A Century of Failed School Reforms, traces the roots ofanti-intellectualism in our schools, concluding they are anything but a counterbalance to the American distaste for intellectual pursuits. But they could and should be. Encouraging kids to reject the life of the mind leaves them vulnerable to exploitation and control. Without the ability to think critically, to defend their ideas and understand the ideas of others, they cannot fully participate in our democracy. Continuing along this path, says writer Earl Shorris, “We will become a second-rate country. We will have a less civil society.”“Intell ect is resented as a form of power or privilege,” writes historian and professorRichard Hofstadter in Anti-Intellectualism in American Life, a Pulitzer-Prize winning book on the roots of anti-intellectualism in US politics, religion, and education. From the beginningof our history, says Hofstadter, our democratic and populist urges have driven us to reject anything that smells of elitism. Practicality, common sense, and native intelligence have been considered more noble qualities than anything you could learn from a book.Ralph Waldo Emerson and other Transcendentalist philosophers thought schooling and rigorousbook learning put unnatural restraints on children: “We are shut up in schools and college recitation rooms for 10 or 15 years and come out at last with a bellyful of words and do not know a thing.” Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Finn exemplified American anti-intellectualism. Its hero avoids being civilized -- going to school and learning to read -- so he can preserve his innate goodness.Intellect, according to Hofstadter, is different from native intelligence, a quality we reluctantly admire. Intellect is the critical, creative, and contemplative side of the mind. Intelligence seeks to grasp, manipulate, re-order, and adjust, while intellect examines, ponders, wonders, theorizes, criticizes and imagines.School remains a place where intellect is mistrusted. Hofstadter says our country’s educational system is in the grips of people who “joyfully and militantly proclaim their hostility to intellect and their eagerness to identify with children who show the least intellectual promise.”56. What do American parents expect their children to acquire in school?[A] The habit of thinking independently.[B] Profound knowledge of the world.[C] Practical abilities for future career.[D] The confidence in intellectual pursuits.57. We can learn from the text that Americans have a history of ________.[A] undervaluing intellect[B] favoring intellectualism[C] supporting school reform[D] suppressing native intelligence58. The views of Ravitch and Emerson on schooling are ________.[A] identical[B] similar[C] complementary1782004 年全国硕士研究生入学统一考试英语试题69[D] opposite59. Emerson, according to the text, is probably ________.[A] a pioneer of education reform[B] an opponent of intellectualism[C] a scholar in favor of intellect[D] an advocate of regular schooling60. What does the author think of intellect?[A] It is second to intelligence.[B] It evolves from common sense.[C] It is to be pursued.[D] It underlies power.Part BDirections:Read the following text carefully and then translate the underlined segments into Chinese. Your translation should be written clearly on ANSWER SHEET 2. (10 points)The relation of language and mind has interested philosophers for many centuries. 61) The Greeks assumed that the structure of language had some connection with the process of thought, which took root in Europe long before people realized how diverse languages could be.Only recently did linguists begin the serious study of languages that were very differentfrom their own. Two anthropologist-linguists, Franz Boas and Edward Sapir, were pioneers in describing many native languages of North and South America during the first half of thetwentieth century. 62) We are obliged to them because some of these languages have since vanished,as the peoples who spoke them died out or became assimilated and lost their native languages. Other linguists in the earlier part of this century, however, who were less eager to deal with bizarre data from “exotic” language, were not always so grateful. 63) The newly described languages were often so strikingly different from the well studied languages of Europe and Southeast Asia that some scholars even accused Boas and Sapir of fabricating their data. Native American languages are indeed different, so much so in fact that Navajo could be used by the US military as a code during World War II to send secret messages.Sapir’s pupil, Benjamin Lee Whorf, continued the study of American Indian languages. 64)Being interested in the relationship of language and thought, Whorf developed the idea thatthe structure of language determines the structure of habitual thought in a society. He reasoned that because it is easier to formulate certain concepts and not others in a given language, the speakers of that language think along one track and not along another. 65) Whorf came to believe in a sort of linguistic determinism which, in its strongest form, states that language imprisons the mind, and that the grammatical patterns in a language can produce far-reaching consequences for the culture of a society. Later, this idea became to be known as the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, but this term is somewhat inappropriate. Although both Sapir and Whorf emphasized the diversity of languages, Sapir himself never explicitly supported the notion of linguistic determinism.61. ________1792004 年全国硕士研究生入学统一考试英语试题7062. ________63. ________64. ________65. ________Section IV Writing66. There I was, walking home at one in the morning after a tiring practice at the theatre. With opening night only a week ago, I was still learning my lines. I was having trouble dealing with my part-time job at the bank and my acting at night at the same time. As I walked, I thought seriously about giving up both acting and San Francisco. City life had become too much for me.As I walked down empty streets under tall buildings, I felt very small and cold. I began running, both to keep warm and to keep away from any possible robbers. Very few people were still out except a few sad-looking homeless people under blankets.About a block from my apartment, I heard a sound behind me. I turned quickly, half expecting to see someone with a knife or a gun. The street was empty. All I saw was a shining streetlight. Still, the noise had made me nervous, so I started to run faster. Not until I reached my apartment, building and unlocked the door did I realize what the noise had been. It had been my wallet falling to the sidewalk.Suddenly I wasn't cold or tired anymore. I ran out of the door and back to where I'd heard the noise. Although I searched the sidewalk anxiously for fifteen minutes, my wallet was nowhere to be found.Just as I was about to give up the search, I heard the garbage truck pull up to the sidewalk next to me. When a voice called from the inside, "Alisa Camacho? " I thought I was dreaming. How could this man know my name? The door opened, and out jumped a small red-haired man with an amused look in his eye. "Is this what you're looking for? "he asked, holding up a small square shape. It was nearly 3 A.M. by the time I got into bed. I wouldn't get much sleep that night, but I had gotten my wallet back. I also had gotten back some enjoyment of city life. I realized that the city couldn't be a bad place as long as people were willing to help each other.(1) How did the write feel when she was walking home after work?A. Cold and sickB. Green building can also refer to environmentally friendly houses, factories, and offices.Green building means "reducing the impact (影响)of TAL#NBSP the building on the land", Taryn Holowka of the U. S. Green Building Council in Washington, DC. Said.According to Holowka, buildings account for (占了) 65 percent of total U. S. electricity use.But green buildings can reduce energy and water use. Also, the buildings are often located near public transportation such as buses and subways, so that people can drive their cars less. That could be good for the environment, because cars use lots of gas and give off pollution. Green buildings are often built on developed land, so that the buildings don' t destroy forests.Marty Dettling is project manager for a building that put these ideas into action. The Solaire has been called the country's first green high-rise building. According to Dettling. "We've reduced our energy use by one-third and our water by 50 percent. The Solaire cuts energy in part by using solar power. "On the face of the building we have solar panels which change the sun's energy into electricity, " Dettling explained. The Solaire also has lights that automatically turn off when people leave the room. In addition the building has lots of windows, allowing people to use the sun for light during the day. The Solaire cuts water by reusing it.Not everyone is eager to move into a green building, however, Some people think that things like solar panels cost more money than traditional energy sources. Anyhow, Holowka said, "It's going to be big."(1) In the second paragraph, the underlined words "the building" most probably referto.A. an ordinary buildingB. an energy-saving buildingC. a green-colored buildingD. a building in Washington, D. Because of this, most people think that craft (手艺) no longer exists. One of the ways these people wrongly support their view is by pointing to 100-year-old homes which are still solid, and arguing that it is the craftsmanship that is responsible for their durability (持久性). "Homes in those days were well-built, "they say. No doubt these homes were well-built, but what these people have done is mix up the quality of material used in the house with the quality of the craftsmanship.Homes today could be built to last just as long as those old homes if people were willing or able to pay the price. For example, more people can no longer afford solid oak stairways, although they were once fairly common in older homes. Nor can they afford the high labor cost of employing a carpenter (木匠)to build the stairway. Yet if someone can pay the high cost, there are still plenty of carpenters around able to make those stairways. And not only would these carpenters know how to build them, they would probably do a better job than carpenters of old.One thing the modern carpenter has which enables him to do a better job is much more advanced tools. Such tools as laser beams and power planes help them lay out a house better and make more precision cuts (精确切割) on the wood. Also, it is not uncommon any more to find carpenters with college degrees and carpenters with a solid knowledge of mathematics, which would enable them to deal with more difficult house designs. The problem of modern quality, then, really boils down to the problem of material, for the modern carpenter is just as able to produce craftsmanship as the carpenter of fifty years ago, but only if given proper material.(1) Compared to the carpenters in the past, modern carpenters are.A. more learnedB. more successfulC. more imaginativeD. more hardworking(2) What does the underlined word "they" (paragraph 2) refer to?A. carpenters who are fond of oak stairways.B. carpenters who have college degrees.C. people who think that modern material is of low quality.D. people who think highly of carpenters of old.(3) What does the third paragraph mainly discuss?A. People in the past preferred to use oak to build stairways.B. It is now expensive to employ a carpenter.C. Good carpenters still exist in modern times.D. Modern houses last as long as the old one.(4) What would be the best title for the text?A. Craft, Back to Life?B. Is Craft Dead?C. History of Craftsmanship.D. Still, I felt energetic; despite the hills it was going to be a fine run.Just ahead of me was Peggy Mimno, a teacher from Mount Kiseo, New York. She too was running easily, moving along at my speed. The pace(步速)felt comfortable, so I decided to stay where I was; why pay attention to pace when she was setting such a nice one? I'd overtake(追上)her later on when she tired. So I ran behind her. The course headed north for miles, wandered west for a hilly mile, then turned south again along a winding road. The race was getting harder. We had four miles left and already it was beginning to be real work.Peggy overtook a young runner. She seemed to known him, for they exchanged a few cheerful words as she passed him. Their exchange worried me. You don't chat during a race unless you feeling good, and Peggy plainly was.Still, I was close enough to overtake her if she tired, so I didn't give up hope completely. We were getting nearer to a long, punishing hill now and it would be the test. We were a mile from the finish line, so whatever happened on the hill would almost determine who crossed it first. As I moved up the hill, my attention wandered for a few minutes. When I looked up, Peggy was moving away-first five yards, then ten, then more. Finally it was clear that there was no help of catching her. She beat me soundly. There is an important lesson in that race. Women are thought to be weaker, slower and not nearly as skilled in sport. Yet as Peggy Mimno so clearly showed, the similarities between men and women runners are more important than differences. I have run with a number of women, and I can say it is often hard work.(1) What did the writer think of the race in the beginning?A. It would be hard work.B. It would be an easy race.C. It would be a test of his strength.D. It would be a good learning experience.(2) What worried the writer when Peggy greeted the young runner?A. Peggy overtook the young runner.B. Peggy was running energetically.C. Peggy was laughing as the writer.D. Peggy paid no attention to the writer.(3) By saying "a long, punishing hill" (paragraph5), the writer implies that.A. Peggy would fail to reach the hilltopB. men are more skilled at climbing hillsC. overtaking Peggy would be easyD. climbing the hill would be a demanding task(4) What lesson does the writer learn from the race?A. Women are as good as men in sport.B. Women are better at climbing hills.C. He should have more training in a cross-country race.D. He should set a quicker pace at the beginning of a race.四、短文改错(每小题1分,共10分)22、【来源】 2004年高考真题浙江卷第76~85题10分(每题1分)此题要求改正所给短文中的错误。

People use money to buy food, clothes and hundreds of other things. In the past, many different things were used as money. People on Pacific islands once exchanged shells for goods. The Chinese used cloth and knives. In Africa, elephant tusks or salt were used. Even today, some people in Africa are still paid in salt. Coins were first invented by the Chinese. Originally, they were round pieces of metal with a hole in the center, so that a piece of string could keep them together. This made doing business much easier, but people still found coins inconvenient tocarry when they wanted to buy something expensive. To solve this problem, the Chinese again came up with the solution. They began to use paper money for coins. People who are prevented from sleeping begin to suffer obvious effect after a few days —they think less clearly, and they fall asleep during the working hours. Some may have hallucinations(幻觉).There are no rules about sleep. Generally speaking, grown-ups sleep about seven and a half hours each night and probably more than 60 percent get between seven and eight hours. But perhaps eight percent are quite happy with five hours or less, and four percent or sofind that they want ten hours or more. If you feel all right, you're probably gettingenough sleep. The important thing is not to worry how much other people get —their needs may be different. Exercise doesn't seem to increase the need for sleep, office workers, for example, sleep for about as long as people doing physically active work.Children sleep more than grown-ups —perhaps fourteen to eighteen hours soon after birth, going down to grown-up levels by early teenage. Sleep patterns also tend to bedifferent in the elderly, who may sleep less at night than they did when younger. Theyfind sleep getting more broken, and often make it a rule to sleep during the daytime.36. According to the passage, some people are unable to think clearly because ____________.A) they have hallucinationsB) they feel sleepy during the working hoursC) they don't have enough sleepD) they sleep for too many hours37. Which of the following is true?A) All grown-ups must have at least eight-hour sleep.B) Most grown-ups sleep for seven or eight hours.C) Few grown-ups need only five hours or less to sleep.D) Grown-ups usually sleep less than ten hours.38. Whether you have enough sleep can be judged by ____________.A) how many hours you have sleptB) comparing with hours other people's sleepC) whether you do office work or physical workD) whether you feel fresh and energetic39. According to the passage, a boy of fourteen years old sleeps ____________.A) as many hours as a grown-upB) much longer hours than a grown-upC) for fourteen hours each dayD) for less than eight hours each day40. Which of the following is true when the elderly find sleep getting more broken?A) They just ignore it.B) They usually sleep during the daytime.C) They talk about it to their friends.D) They are always complaining about it.Task 2Directions: This task is the same as task 1. The 5 questions or unfinished statements are numbered 41 through 45.Every human being, no matter what he is doing, gives off body heat. The usual problem is how to dispose of it. But the designers of the Johnstown campus of the University of Pittsburg set themselves the opposite problem —how to collect body heat. They have designed a collection system which utilizes not only body heat, but the heat given off by such objects as light bulbs and refrigerators as well. The system works so well that no conventional fuel is needed to make the campus's six buildings comfortable. Some parts of most modern buildings —theaters and offices as well as classrooms —are more than amply heated by people and lights and sometimes must be air-conditioned even in winter. The technique of saving heat and redistributing it is called "heat recovery". A few modern buildings recover heat, but the university's system is the first to recover heat from some buildings and reuse it in others.Along the way, Pitt has learned a great deal about some of its heat producers. The harder a student studies the more heat his body gives off. Male students emit more heat than female students. And the larger a student, the more heat he produces. It is tempting to conclude that the hottest prospect for the Johnstown campus would be a hardworking, overweight male genius.41. Which of the following is true of the heating system of the designers of theJohnstown campus?A) The heat is supplied by human bodies.B) The heat is supplied by both human bodies and other heat-emitting objects.C) The heat is supplied by both human bodies and conventional fuel.D) The heat is supplied by conventional fuel and heat-emitting objects.42. The technique of heat recovery is used to ____________.A) find out the source of heatB) produce a special form of air conditioningC) provide heat for the hot water systemD) collect and reuse heat43. Which of the following persons would produce the least amount of heat?A) A fat female who studies hard.B) A thin female who does not study hard.C) A fat male who does not study hard.D) A thin male who studies hard.44. In the last sentence, the "hottest prospect" refers to ____________.A) the person who produces most heatB) the person who suffers most from heatC) the person who takes in most heatD) the person who withstands most heat45. A good title for this passage would be ____________.A) Modern Building's Heat System.B) A Heat Recovery system.C) A New idea about Heating.D) Recovery of Body's Heat.Task 3Directions: After reading the following passage, you will find 5 questions (No. 46through No. 50) to it. Choose the one that you think is the best answer. Mark your answers on your answer sheet.TEXT AThe way in which people use social space reflects their social relationships and their ethnic identity. Early immigrants to America from Europe brought with them a collective style of living, which they retained until late in the 18th?century. Historical records document a group-oriented existence, in which one room was used for eating, entertaining guests, and sleeping. People ate soups from a sommunal pot, shared drinking cups, and used a common pit toilet. With the development of ideas about individualism, people soon began to shift to the use of individual cups and plates; the eating of meals that included meat, bread, and vegetables served on separate plates; and the use of private toilets. They began to build their houses with separate rooms to entertain guests-living rooms, separate bedrooms for sleeping, separate work areas-kitchen, laundry room, and separate bathrooms.?In Mexico, the meaning and organization of domestic space is strikingly different. Houses are organized around a ?patio?, or courtyard. Rooms open onto the patio, where all kinds of domestic activities take place. Individuals to not have separate bedrooms. Children often sleep with parents, and brothers or sisters share a bed, emphasizing familial interdependence. Rooms in Mexicanhouses are locations for multiple activities that, in contrast, are rigidly separated in the United States.66. Changes in living styles among early immigrants were initially brought about by ____.A. rising living standard?B. new concept?C. new custom?D. new designs of houses?67. Which of the following is NOT discussed in the passage?A. Their concepts of domestic space.B. Their social relationships.C. The functions of their rooms.D. The layout of their houses.?TEXT BThere are superstitions attached to numbers; even those ancient Greeks believed that all numbers and their multiples had some mystical significance.?Those numbers between 1 and 13 were in particular to have a powerful influence over the affairs of men.?For example, it is commonly said that luck, good or bad, comes in threes; if an accident happens, two more of the same kind may be expected soon afterwards. The arrival of a letter will be followed by two others within a certain period.?Another belief involving the number three has it that it is unlucky to light three cigarettes from the one match. If this happens, the bad luck that goes with the deed falls upon the person whose cigarette was the last to be lit. The ill-omen linked to the lighting of three things from one match or candle goes back to at least the 17th? century and probably earlier. It was believed that three candles alight at the same time would be sure to bring bad luck; one, two, or four, were permissible, but never just three.?Seven was another significant number, usually regarded as a bringer of good luck. The ancient astrologers believed that the universe was governed by seven planets; students of Shakespeare will recall that the life of man was divided into seven ages. Seven horseshoes nailed to a house will protect it from all evil.?Nine is usually thought of as a lucky number because it is the product of three times three. It was much used by the Anglo Saxons in their charms for healing.?Another belief was that great changes occurred every 7th and 9th of a man’s life. Consequently, the age of 63(the product of nine and seven) was thought to be a very perilous time for him. If he survived his 63rd? year he might hope to live to a ripe old age.?Thirteen, as we well know, is regarded with great awe and fear. The common belief is that this derives from the fact that there were 13 people at Christ’s Last Supper. This being the eve of his betrayal, it is not difficult to understand the significance given to the number by the early Christians.?In more modern times 13 is an especially unlucky number of a dinner party, for example. Hotels will avoid numbering a floor the 13th?; the progression is from 12 to 14, and no room is given the number 13. Many home owners will use 12 1/2 instead of 13 as their house number.?Yet oddly enough, to be born on the 13th? of the month is not regarded with any fear at all, which just shows how irrational we are in our superstitious beliefs.68. According to the passage, which of the following groups of numbers will certainly bring good luck to people?A.3 and 7.B.3 and 9.C.7 and 9.D.3 and 13.69. The ill luck associated with 13 is supposed to have its origin in ____.A. legendB. religionC. popular beliefD. certain customs70. What is the author’s attitude towards people’s superstitious beliefs?A. He is mildly critical.B. He is strongly critical.C. He is in favour of them.D. His attitude is not clear.TEXT CWomen’s minds work differently from men’s. At least, that is what most men are convinced of. Psychologists view the subject either as a matter or frustration or a joke. Now the biologists have moved into this minefield, and some of them have found that there are real differences between the brains of men and women. But being different, they point out hurriedly, is not the same as being better or worse.?There is, however, a definite structural variation between the male and female brain. The difference is in a part of the brain that is used in the most complex intellectual processes-the link between the two halves of the brain.?The two halves are linked by a trunkline of between 200 and 300 million nerves, the ?corpus callosum. Scientists have found quite recently that the corpus callosum in women is always larger and probably richer in nerve fibres than it is in men. This is the first time that a structural difference has been found between the brains of women and men and it must have some significance. The question is “What?”, and, if this difference exists, are there others? Research shows that present-day women think differently and behave differently from men. Are some of these differences biological and inborn, a result of evolution? We tend to think that is the influence of society that produces these differences. But could we be wrong??Research showed that these two halves of the brain had different functions, and that the ?corpus callosum enabled them to work together. For most people, the left half is used for word handing, analytical and logical activities; the right half works on pictures, patterns and forms. We need both halves working together. And the better the connections, the more harmoniously the two halves work. And, according to research findings, women have the better connections.?But it isn’t all that easy to explain the actual differences between skills of men and women on this basis. In schools throughout the world girls tend to be better than boys at “language subjects” and boys better at maths and physics. If 〖WTHZ〗these differences〖WTBZ〗correspond with thedifferences in the hemispheric trunkline, here is an unalterable distinction between the sexes.?We shan’t know for a while, partly because we don’t know of any precise relationship between abilities in school subject and the functioning of the two halves of the brain, and we cannot understand how the two halves interact via the corpus callosum. But this striking difference must have some effect and, because the difference is in the parts of the brain involved in intellect, we should be looking for differences in intellectual processing.71. Which of the following statements is CORRECT?A. Biologists are conducting research where psychologists have given up.B. Brain differences point to superiority of one sex over the other.C. Results of scientific research fail to support popular belief.D. The structural difference in the brain between the sexes has long been known.72. According to the passage it is commonly believed that brain differences are caused by ____ factors.A. biologicalB. psychologicalC. physicalD. social73. “these differences” n paragraph 5 refer to those in ____.A. skills of men and womenB. school subjectC. the brain structure of men and womenD. activities carried out by the brain74. At the end of the passage the author proposes more work on ____.A. the brain structure as a wholeB. the functioning of part of the brainC. the distinction between the sexesD. the effects of the corpus callosum75. What is the main purpose of the passageA. To outline the research findings on the brain structure.B. To explain the link between sex and brain structure.C. To discuss the various factors that cause brain differences.D. To suggest new areas in brain research.TEXT DInformation is the primary commodity in more and more industries today.?By 2005, 83% of American management personnel will be knowledge workers. Europe and Japan are not far behind.?By 2005, half of all knowledge workers (22% of the labour force) will choose “flext ime, flexplace” arrangements, which allow them to work at home, communicating with the office via computer networks.?In the United States, the so-called “digital divide” seems to be disappearing. Web sites enhance books by providing pictures, sound, film clips, and flexible indexing and search utilities.?Implications: Anyone with access to the Internet will be able to achieve the education needed to build a productive life in an increasingly high-tech world. Computer learning may even reduce the growing American prison population.?Knowledge workers are generally better paid than less-skilled workers. Their wealth is raising overall prosperity.?Even entry-level workers and those in formerly unskilled positions require a growing level of education. For a good career in almost any field, computer competence is a must. This is one major trend raising the level of education required for a productive role in today’s work force. I see three kinds of pressure working on people today: pressure from education, family and career. It is easy to blame the school for charging too much money, the family members for the heavy burden, the society for the fierce competition. I think people should relax. It is important for them to keep a good mood under whatever circumstances.?Long gone are the days when people lived their life with a certain relaxation, sampling a wide variety of activities—film, music, art, poetry. But now, a lot of people suffer from a lot of pressure. They can’t communicate well with co-workers and family members, and have unbalanced, one-dimensional lives. Some people complain of symptoms of stress, for instance, loss of appetite, a complete sense of exhaustion, insomnia and low morale. Thus have destructive effect on their health. People tend to lose temper easily, and this may interfere personal relationship. What’s more, a high rate of suicide may warn people of their emotional well-being.?To be a healthy person physically and psychologically, one should keep a good mood,。

It encompasses the millions of personalcomputers connected by modems—via the telephone system—to commercial online services, as well as the millions more with high-speed links to local area networks, office E-mail systems and the Internet. Itincludes the rapidly expanding wireless services: microwave towers that carry great quantities of cellularphone and data traffic; communications satellites strung like beads in geosynchronous orbit; low-flyingsatellites that will soon crisscross the globe like angry bees, connecting folks too far-flung or too much on the go to be tethered by wires. Someday even our television sets may be part of cyberspace, transformed intointeractive “ teleputers ” by so-called full-service networks like the ones several cable-TV companies(including Time Warner) are building along the old cable lines, using fiber optics and high-speedswitches. Ⅵ.Directions:Read through the following passages and choose the best answer marked A,B,C orD.(20%) There are two main things that make aircraft engineering difficult; the need to make every component as reliable as possible and the need to build everything as light as possible. The fact that an aeroplane is up in the air and cannot stop if anything goes wrong, makes it perhaps a matter of life or death that its performance is absolutely dependable. Given a certain power of engine, and consequently a certain fuel consumption, there is a practical limit to the total weight of aircraft that can be made to fly. Out of that weight as much as possible is wanted for fuel, radio navigational instruments, passenger seats, or freight room, and, of course, the passengers or freight themselves. So the structure of the aircraft has to be as small and light as safety and efficiency will allow. The designer must calculate the normal load that each part will bear. This specialist is called the‘stress man’. He takes account of any unusual stress that may be put on the part as a precaution against errors in manufacture, acciedental damage, etc. The stress man’s calculations go to the designer of the part, and he must make it as strong as the stress man says if necessary. One or two samples are always tested to prove that they are as strong as the designer intended. Each separate part is tested, then a whole assembly, for example, a complete wing, and finally the whole aeroplane. When a new type of aeroplane is being made, normally only one of the first three made will be flown. Two will be destroyed on the ground in structural tests. The third one will be tested in the air. Two kinds of ground strength tests are carried out. The first is to find the resistance to loading of thewings, tail, etc. until they reach their maximum load and collapse. The other test is for fatigue strength.Relatively small loads are applied thousands of times. Each may be well under what the structure could stand as a single load, but many repetitions can result in collapse. One from of this test is done on the passenger cabin. It is filled with air at high pressure as for high-altitude flying and completely submerged in a large tank of water while the test is going on. The surrounding water prevents the cabin from bursting like a bomb if there is a failure. When a plane has passed all the tests it can get a government certificate of airworthiness, without which it is illegal to fly, except for test flying. Making the working parts reliable is as difficult as making the structure strong enough. The flyingcontrols, the electrical equipment, the fire precautions, etc. must not only be light in weight, but must work both at high altitudes where the temperature may be below freezing point and in the hot air of an airfield in the tropics. To solve all these problems the aircraft industry has a large number of research workers, with elaborate laboratories and test houses, and new materials to give the best strength in relation to weight are constantly being tested.47. The two main requirements of aircraft design are ______.A. speed and cheapnessB. reliability and passenger comfortC. making things both light and dependableD. ability to stay up in the air and avoid breakdowns48. The maximum possible weight of an aircraft is determined by ______.A. the enigne powerB. the amount of freight roomC. the number of passengersD. international regulations49. The stress man’s job is to calculate ______.A. how safe the plane isB. how strong each part must beC. what height the plane will fly atD. the amount of luggage each passenger may carry50. The first three aeroplanes of a new type ______.A. are all destroyedB. do not flyC. are later broken up for spare partsD. are used for testing purposes51. The passenger cabin test in water is designed to ______.A. make sure the plane would be safe if it landed in waterB. test fatigue strengthC. see of the cabin will burst like a bombD. keep the cabin cool。

Now always-on-the-go New Yorkers have Liz and Bill.Liz and Bill, two college graduates in their early 20s, have spent a whole year trying to have thousands of people talk to them in subway stations and on busy street corners. Just talk.Using a 2-foot-tall sign that says, “Talk to Me,” they attract conversationalists, who one evening included a mental patient, and men in business suits. They don’t collect money. They don’t push religion(宗教). So what’s the point?“To see what happens,” said Liz. “We simply enjoy life with open communication(交流).”Shortly after the September 11, 2001 attacks, they decided to walk from New York City to Washington, a 270-mile trip. They found they loved talking to people along the way and wanted to continue talking with strangers after their return.“It started as a crazy idea,” Liz said. “We were so curious about all the strangers walking by with their life stories. People willtalk to us about anything: their jobs, their clothes, their childhood experiences, anything.”Denise wanted to talk about an exam she was about to take. She had stopped by for the second time in two days, to let the two listeners know how it went.Marcia had lost her husband to a serious disease. “That was very heavy on my mind,” Marcia said. “To be able to talk about it to total strangers was very good,” she explained. To celebrate a year of talking, the two held a get-together in a city park for all the people they had met over the past year. A few hundred people showed up, as well as some television cameramen and reporters. They may plan more parties or try to attract more people to join their informal talks. Some publishers have expressed interest ina book, something they say they’ll consider.56. What did Liz and Bill start doing after September 2001?A. Chatting with people.B. setting up street signs.C. Talking stories to strangers.D. Organizing a speaker’s corner.57. What they have been doing can be described as ____.A. pointlessB. normalC. crazyD. successful58. They are examples of those who talked to Liz and Bill.59. What will Liz and Bill do in the future?A. Go in for publishing.B. Do more television programs.C. Continue what they are doing.D. Spend more time reading books.60. How do they like the idea of writing a book?A. They have decided to wait a year or two.B. They will think about it carefully.C. They agreed immediately.D. They find it hard to do that.BMy first reaction was annoyance. It was Friday afternoon, and I was within an hour of finishing my work for the week. As I was leaving, a nurse brought me one more patient message. The statement read: “Mrs. Jones called to say that she has had blurred vision(视觉模糊) ever since her medical test this morning.” I smiled. Suddenly our tests were causing eye problems. This week my patients had questioned everything. My patient with high blood pressure had stopped coming to her treatment on the advice of an Internet chat room. A woman who had a mental problem was substituting(用……替代) St. John’s word for her medication. Now Mrs. Jones was imagining problems. I rolled my eyes.My second reaction was worry. As I looked through her record, I tried to figure out why she would have blurred vision, but nothing in her record explained the new problem. She’s probably just anxious, I thought. Still, she wouldn’t have called if she had been all right. I picked up the phone. What I next felt can only be described as delight. Before I made the call, the nurse ran in: Mrs. Jones called. Her vision is fine. Turns out she picked up the wrong glasses when she left the office. The X-ray technician has been having the same problem. I let out a laugh. Mrs. Jones had been right. Her vision had been blurred. Now we know why. Finally I felt shame. I came to realize what Mrs. Jones had taught me. I had first known she was wrong, that her anxiety had clouded her judgment. Instead, my medical training had clouded mine. Now I feel thankful that Mrs. Jones figured it out before I made a mistake about our relationship. Patients come to me for my help. They pay me to listen, diagnose(诊断), treat and talk. That suggests trust; I must remember that, and trust them too.61. The writer smiled while reading the patient message because he knew ____.A. Mrs. Jones would ask for more testsB. The patient was being unreasonableC. the nurse was joking with himD. Mrs. Jones would call him62. What has caused Mrs. Jone s’ eye problem?A. Wrong glasses.B. Medical checkup.C. Her own imagination.D. Chatting on the Internet.63. The underlined words “clouded her judgment” in the last paragraph probably mean ____.A. made her less trustful toward the doctorB. put her in control of her own feelingsC. made her less able to think clearlyD. put her in a dangerous situationCIt’s not the flashiest car in the world. Not even close. But the 1971 V olkswagen named Helios can do something most cars can’t: run on solar energy——energy from the sun’s light and heat!Joahos Bechtold, 14, and the other students at the Riverside School in Lyndonville, Vermont, worked many months to get Helios ready for the 1999 American Tour de Sol (“Sol” is the Latin word for “sun”). They named their car after Helios, the sun god in Greek mythology(神话).The 4-year-old Tour de Sol encourages the use of “green”, or environmentally friendly, cars to help reduce pollution and save energy. It’s not a race. Cars are judged on fuel efficiency(耗油量) rather than speed. In the week-long event, 44 cars took the 350-mile tour form Waterbury, Connecticut, to Lake George, New York. Of the 23 student cars, Helios was the only one built by middle school students.A teacher drove Helios, but the children talked with people wherever they stopped along the road. “That was my favorite part,”says Anna Browne, 15. “We explained how the car runs.”Due in part to old, inefficient batteries(电池), Helios finished fourth—out of four—in its kind, the sun-powered class. “We were there for the fun of it,” Anna says. “We’re proud of Helios,” says Ariel Gleicher. “It’s a car that’s good for the environment.”64. What is special about the car Helios in the text?A. It was built by middle school students.B. It has an attractive design.C. It was made in 1971.D. It won the fourth prize.65. How many sun-powered cars took part in the race?A. 1.B. 4.C. 23.D. 44.66. What would be the best title for the text?A. The Making of HeliosB. 1999 American Tour de SolC. Sun-powered Cars on the RoadD. Use of Green Cars in Connecticut67. The students felt proud of Helios because ____.A. it could run as far as 350 milesB. it was favored by many childrenC. it had high-quality batteriesD. it was driven by clean energyDThe other day, my friend Jane was invited to a 40th birthday party. The time printed on the invitation was 7:30 pm. Jane went off with her husband, expecting a merry evening of wine, food, and song.By 9:45, everybody was having great fun, but no food had appeared. Jane and David were restless. Other guests began whispering that they, to, were starving. But no one wanted to leave, just in case some food was about to appear. By 11:00, there was still no food, and everyone was completely off their heads. Jane and David left hungry and angry.Their experience suggests that the words on the printed invitations need to be made clearer. Everyone reads and understands the invitations differently. Most of us would agree that 6.30——8.30pm means drinks only, go out to dinner afterwards; 8.00pm or 8.30pm means possible dinner, but 9.30pm and any time thereafter means no food, eat beforehand, roll up late. But this is not alw ays the case. If asked to a students’ party at 6.30pm, it is normal for guests not to appear before midnight, if at all, and no one cares. Being the first to arrive——looking eager——is social death. When my mother is asked to a party for 6.30, she likes to be there, if not on time, then no later than seven. My age group(late thirties) fall somewhere between the two, but because we still think we’re young, we’re probably closer to student-time than grown-up time. The accepted custom at present is confusing(混乱的), sometimes annoying, and it often means you may go home hungry, but it does lend every party that precious element(成分) of surprise.68. The underlined words “off their heads” probably mean____.A. tiredB. crazyC. curiousD. hopeless69. Ja ne and David’s story is used to show that ____.A. party-goers usually get hungry at partiesB. party invitations can be confusingC. people should ask for food at partiesD. birthday parties for middle-aged people are dull70. For some people, arri ving on time for a students’ party will probably be considered ____.A. very difficultB. particularly thoughtfulC. friendly and politeD. socially unacceptable71. According to the writer, people in their late thirties ____.A. are likely to arrive late for a partyB. care little about the party timeC. haven’t really grown up yetD. like surprises at parties72. What is the general idea of the text?A. It’s safe to arrive late just when food is served.B. It’s wise to eat something before going to a party.C. It’s important to follow social rules of party-going.D. It’s necessary to read invitations carefully.E◆Cannes will rock the sound of a cancan dance this year when Moulin Rouge by the Australian director Baz Luhrmann opens the French film festival(电影节) in May.
