Chapter1Introduction
1.1Backgroundofthestudy
Withthefurtheropening-upofChina,thecommunicationbetweenChinaandmanyothercountrieshas
beenmuchcloserinsuchvariousaspectsaspolitics,economy,cultureanddiplomacy,etc.Foreign
languages,especiallyEnglish,playaveryimportantroleininternationalcommunication.Asaresult,
collegeEnglishteachingandlearninghavebeenpaidmoreattentiontobyChinesepeople.Writingplays
avitalroleinthefivebasiclanguageskills—listening,speaking,reading,writingandtranslating.Asan
importantpartoflanguageoutput,writingshowsthelearners’proficiencyofEnglishexpressionand
performance.Andthelearners’Englishwritinglevelreflectsthemasteryoflanguageskills.
Consequently,EnglishwritingteachingistheindispensablepartofcollegeEnglishteaching.Accordingto
Raimes(1983),writingreinforcesthegrammaticalstructures,idiomsandvocabularythatteachershave
beenteachingtostudents.TheuniquefeaturesofEnglishwritingprocessmakeitquitedifferentfromfirst
language(L1)writingprocess.WhenChineselearnerslearnEnglish,mostofthemwillbeinfluencedby
theirmothertongue.TheEnglishwritingsofnon-Englishmajorsarefilledwithdifferentmistakes.
Chinglish,asoneofthesemistakes,isnotonlydifficulttounderstandforthereader,butalsodifficultto
bear.Pinkham(2000:1)remarked“Buttoonedegreeoranother,theworkofallbutthemosthighly
trainedandexperiencedamongthemwillinevitablycontainelementsofChinglish”.Thus,Chinglishhas
nowbecomeamainobstaclewhichhinderspeoplefromcommunicatingwithandunderstandingeach
otherproperly.Whilerevisingthestudents’Englishcompositions,EFL(EnglishasaForeignLanguage)
teachersoftencomplainthattherearesomanyChinglishexpressionswhichmakethemhavedifficultyin
understandingthestudents’compositions.

1.2Significanceandpurposeofthestudy
Asmentionedabove,Chinglishisanobstaclewhicheffectsthelearners’Englishwritingexpression.
Therefore,itisveryimportantfortheresearchersandeducatorstopayattentiontoChinglishinlanguage
teachingandlearning.SomeresearchersathomeandabroadconductedtheirstudiesonChinglish,but
notsystematically.Whatismore,theirstudiesmainlyfocusedonChinglishinChinese-Englishtranslation,
whilefewstudiesfocusedEnglishwritingsandthesubjectsofthestudiesweresampledfromoneschool.
Therefore,itisverynecessaryforresearcherstoconductastudyonChinglishinEnglishwritings
ofChineselearnersfromdifferentlevelsofuniversities.Thesignificanceofthestudyisasfollows:First,
referringtothepreviousstudies,thisstudyisadvancedonthetheoreticalfoundation.Thesimilarstudies
havebeenconductedundertheguidanceofthetheoryofSecondLanguageAcquisition,butthisstudyis
conductedundertheguidanceofthetheoryofSecondLanguageAcquisitionandtheoryof
ConceptualBlending.Thus,underthetwotheoriesguidance,theauthorcanmakeamorein-depthstudy
ofChinglishinEnglishwritings.Second,itisextremelyrarethatthesubjectsofthisstudyaresampled
fromSpokenandWrittenEnglishCorpusofChineseLearners2.0(SWECCL2.0)foranalyzingChinglish
atdifferentlevels.Inthesimilarstudies,thesubjectsaresampledfromoneschool.Thus,thescopeofthe
subjectsinthisstudyiswiderthanthatinthesimilarstudies.

2.1Chinglish
ChinglishisspokenorwrittenEnglishlanguagewhichisinfluencedbytheChineselanguage.Therefore,
ChinglishalwaysoccursinevitablytoChineselearnerswhentheyacquireEnglish.Someresearchers
bothathomeandabroadpayattentiontotherelatedstudiesonChinglish.Butthecomprehensiveand
systematicstudyontheformsandcausesofChinglishhasneverbeenachieved.However,thisdoesnot
meanthatChinglishinEnglishteachingshouldbeignored.Englishteachingresearchersandeducators
shouldconductstudiesonChinglishsystematicallyinordertoimprovelearner’sEnglishproficiency.
Nevertheless,owingtotheunsystematicandinstablenatureofChinglish,peoplecouldnotdefinitelytell
whatChinglishisandexpoundvariousdefinitionsfromdifferentperspectiveswiththeirown
understanding.InordertofindthesolutionstominimizingChinglish,weshouldhaveaclearideaofwhat
Chinglishis.InordertohaveadeeperinsightintothedefinitionofChinglish,differentversions
arepresentedbydifferentresearchersasfollows:DengYanchang&LiuRunqing(1989:115)remarked
“ChinglishisspeechorwritinginEnglishthatshowstheinterferenceorinfluenceofChinese.
SomesentencesmaybelittlemorethanwordforwordtranslationsofChineseexpressions.Chinglish
maybegrammaticallycorrect,butthechoiceofwordsorphrasesandthemannerofexpressionsdonot
conformtoStandardEnglishusage.Althoughunderstandingmaynotbeaproblem,Chinglishis
unacceptable”.LiWenzhong(1993)proposedthatChinglishistheabnormalordeformedEnglishwhichis
producedbyChineseEnglishlearnersoruserswhentheyareinfluencedbyChineselanguagerules.This
