6. My views on the expansion of college enrollment
As we all know, many students study very hard nowadays to get access to the
college. And to their happiness, plenty of universities have expanded their
enrollment since 1998. But is it really a good thing? This is a disputed
question.
Indeed, the expansion of college enrollment has numerous pluses. In the first
place, it is a practical way to promote education nationwide. More high school
graduates are entitled to get higher education thanks to the growing planned
enrollment figure. At the same time, their heavy academic pressure may be
released, too. What’s more, in the technological age, knowledge plays an
important role both in individual and national development. For a person, a
good education means a good job and the security of a happy life. For a nation,
its future depends upon the moral and intellectual level of its people. Besides,
the expansion of college enrollment enables universities to keep up with the
need of job market to provide more qualified people, who are the key for a
country to win in the fierce international competition.
However, despite all the benefits, we can’t deny the drawbacks of the
expansion. For instance, since teaching facilities and accommodation
capacities are limited, it is difficult for many colleges to meet the demand of an
ever-increasing number of newly enrolled students. On the other hand, the
average quality of freshmen is declining. In the long run, hunting for a job will
be a tough thing for the graduates and that will inevitably exert much pressure
on the prospects of employment.
Nevertheless, we should take a positive attitude towards the problems. The
expanding enrollment will result in far more advantages than disadvantages.
With the development of our national economy, the problem as mentioned
above will be solved if proper measures are taken. As students, we should
treasure the opportunity to go to college and bring the advantages of the
expansion into full play. It is advisable for us to gain as much knowledge as we
can on the one hand and cultivate our abiIity on the other. In this way, we can
do our share to help improve our national education.
