He's a really cool guy who got to go to space! Yang Liwei was the first Chinese astronaut to go into outer space. His mission was called Shenzhou 5 and it happened in 2003 when he orbited the Earth 14 times over 21 hours. That must have been such an amazing experience!I first learned about Yang Liwei in science class when we were studying the solar system and space exploration. Our teacher told us the story of how he trained for years and years to become an astronaut. He had to go through intense physical and mental preparation. The selection process was extremely tough too – he was chosen from among thousands of applicants!Yang Liwei was born in 1965 in Suizhong County, Hunan Province. He came from a family of farmers and had a pretty normal childhood, going to school and helping out on the farm. Even as a young boy though, he was really interested in planes and spacecraft. He dreamed of one day travelling to space himself.In 1983, at age 18, Yang joined the People's Liberation Army Air Force. This was the first step towards making his astronaut dreams come true. He trained as a fighter pilot and became really good at flying all kinds of aircraft. His skills and hard work paid off because in 1998, he was recruited into China's astronaut training program.The training to become an astronaut is no joke! Yang and the other astronaut candidates had to undergo rigorous training for mental and physical strength. They took academic courses in fields like astronomy, aviation and spacecraft engineering. But it wasn't all just book learning – a huge part of the training involved practicing skills like living in confined spaces, doing scientific experiments, and operating the spacecraft's systems.They also had to go through extreme physical tests to make sure their bodies could handle the huge forces involved in being launched into space on a rocket. This included spending days in centrifuge machines that spin around really fast to simulate the intense g-forces of a rocket launch. I can't even imagine how tough that must have been!After 5 grueling years of preparation, Yang was finally selected as the prime crew member for the Shenzhou 5 spaceflight mission. On October 15, 2003, the big day arrived. At9am Beijing time, the massive Shenzhou 5 rocket blasted off from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in the Gobi Desert. Trailing a plume of fire behind it, the rocket carried Yang up through the Earth's atmosphere and into orbit around our planet.Yang spent the next 21 hours and 23 minutes zipping around the Earth at over 28,000 km/h! During his 14 orbits, he carried out experiments in zero gravity and sent back video transmissions of his activities inside the cramped Shenzhou capsule. He got to experience the awesome sights of seeing the curvature of the Earth against the blackness of space. At one point, he famously said "I feel good" when mission control asked how he was doing.Finally, after circling the globe multiple times, it was time for Yang to come back down to Earth. His capsule re-entered the atmosphere and deployed parachutes to slow its descent before landing safely in Inner Mongolia. The Shenzhou 5 mission was a complete success, making China the third country in the world to independently send a human into space after Russia and the United States.When Yang emerged from the capsule looking a bit wobbly from being in zero-g, he was instantly declared a national hero.Huge crowds cheered and the Chinese people celebrated this major technological and exploratory accomplishment with pride. Yang's safe return capped off years of hard work by thousands of scientists, engineers and support staff.In the years since then, China has continued launching astronauts ("taikonauts" as they are called) into space on increasingly ambitious missions. They've sent up multiple crews to construct modules for a permanent Chinese space station. In 2022, Chinese taikonauts even completed a spacewalk from the station to test new crew suits.
