孝文帝住在霸陵，回头对群臣说：‚用北山的山石作为棺犉，哪里能动得了啊！‛张释之进言说：‚假使棺犉中有让人想要的，即使用金属溶液填塞南山还是会有空隙，假使棺犉中没有让人想要的，即使没有巨石做成的棺犉，又有什么担忧的呢？‛死去的人没有终点，而国家却有兴亡，所以张释之的话，是保证国家千秋万代的计划啊。

《周易》说：‚古代埋葬逝者，用薪柴把死者厚厚地盖住，埋葬在原野之中，不起坟堆，不种树木（或做标记），后来的圣人改用棺犉。
